Thomas Peters was more than an ex-slave. He fought in the American revolutionary war on the British side of the war because the British promised freedom to all Blacks who fought for them. They fought in all black Regiments know as the "Ethiopian Regiment". As far as I'm concerned, they were the only Freedom Fighters in the Revolutionary war. After the British lost the war to the American rebels, Thomas Peters and others were evacuated to Nova Scotia Canada. Once in Canada, they petitioned King George of England for land. King George told them those who want land, can stay in Canada. Those who want to leave Canada, can go to Sierra Leone. A flotilla of 14 Ships set sail to Sierra Leone and settled there. That's a short version of the story of Thomas Peters. He was a true Freedom Fighter and a proud son of Africa who chose to return home.

Is this the war where the english thought against the patriots I just was watching about this on a series called black and british: a forgotten history some people once awarded freedom was in the UK but many were on the streets but one man had a business married a white woman an then he then gave it up to be a celebrated bare knuckle fighter (bill richmond). They them sent them back to sierra leone aswell as "unruly" slaves from jamaica to start a colony.
History is very dark I never new stuff like bunce island existed also when I visited sierra leone as a tourist.

The name sierra lyoa was given by this portugese Explorer pedro da cintra 1462. The country was covered by thick forest and mountains that where hard to penetrate. The Limba/mende where already there deep in the forest.
We Will never know what they called the country before because it was so
Long ago. Also they lived mostly in the southern/northern part of the country.
There where also settlers from other parts of Africa fleeing persecution that settled with the early settlers and integrated with the locals. Very interesting history. They probably heard no name at that time because
it was so many different tribes and cultures, they had there Kings and tribal
chiefs and i’m guessing there own names for the areas that they occupy.
    (Their different chieftency)
This is to help answer your question Wode about what the country was called before? Nobody knows.

Among the first Settlers of Sierra Leone from Nova Scotia, Canada, were Maroons from Jamaica.
After the Third Maroon War in the 1790's in the Cockpit Country, the British expatriated the Maroons, who had been captured, to Nova Scotia. Instead of perishing in the cold, many went to the new country, established by the British, on the West African Coast: Sierra Leone.

Yes, African students are taught about the atlantic slave trade quite extensively and most probably know more about it than those in western countries.

I'm born in UK of Jamaican Immigrants. I recently through a DNA test found out that i'm 32% Sierra leonean & 43% Ghanaian (Which I knew form my Aunt who told me my Great Great grandmother was an Ashanti from the Gold Coast). I had no idea about Sierra Leone heritage and seeing this video has opened my eyes up to so much more about myself in that I never give up or take crap or injustice form anyone... Much like Bai Bureh who i've just learned of through this video and will be researching a whole heap more. The tree is also now on my places to visit before I leave this plain of reality and return to my ancestors... As always thank you Wode Maya the man i called "The Second Marcus Garvey" ❤️💛💚🖤

Yea, I read somewhere that many Israelites had escaped persecution to reside there off the coast, locals sold them into British slavery and they were taken to JA. Brother, the scriptures in the book of Daniel said the iron feet beast would devoured the 4-corners of the earth with iron teeth, this’s the Roman Empire that melted into Modern Europe, then a heavenly rock smashed them to dust to yield way for kingdom of Messiah. So don’t move anywhere now, just repent and prepare for the Messiah is now coming. UK, US, Europe will be nuked soon so it is the end of humanity.
