the sad truth is that most of these people are probably remembering their casual childhood play when yugioh was less mainstream and trying to modern competitive play.
Nah burst summons are fine but I almost quit when they came out with drive summoning that was really degenerate, but it got power crept by Burst Summons so I guess it's fine now.
Lol, no matter how far the meta will be, Links will NEVER be popular. They‘re just a necessity which was supposed to slow the game down, but it backfired.
People will finally accept Burst Summoning when Extreme Summoning come out in 2043, which you can use monsters from your opponent's deck, from a booster pack, or from your friend's binder as its material
@@r4nd0mguy99 links were never supposed to slow the game down but people expected them too and they didn't. They checked pendulums but otherwise nothing really changed due to the fact that if you can make multiple extra deck monsters you can make a link monster so it either doesn't matter or you can deal with it.
Me: I play Upstart Goblin. Opponent: THIS IS WHY MODERN YGO IS EVIL AND BAD WRONG!! YOU JUST...JUST DREW A CARD!! OUTSIDE OF YOIUR FDRAW SHTEP! BLAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!
Synchro actually was the last good mechanic they've implemented. Then they ran the game overboard by starting with shit like XYZ, pendulum and link...hence the new play field..
@@nemesisalex9424 I dont see how, by modern standards, Stratos barelys do anything. In my HERO deck when I open only him it's always a brick. Vyon and Solid are so much better.
Now, I just kinda wanna do my own commenters don't understand on those Mystic Mine comments from the end of the video. Top left: We are talking about a card that doesn't allow your opponent to do anything (mostly) and it isn't creativity if a lot of other people already play it. It works against creativity because it's such an easy to set up lockdown. Or at least I think that's what they mean, they don't really articulate their point whatsoever. Top right: The only way to beat Mystic Mine is S/T removal and that's it. I mean, you could run Prohibition, but that's still unsearchable, can still be negated and wastes sidedeck spots for something that's not that good against other strategies. Middle left: Having to hard draw S/T removal or else you auto-lose still isn't fun. As with many other degenerate things in Yugioh's past, just because there's an out to something doesn't mean that it isn't degenerate. And then they can of course just negate your S/T removal or just activate their second and third copy now that you don't have that Twin Twister anymore. Also that thing with 41 cards with Upstart confuses me, no idea what their point with that was. Don't run 41 cards with Upstart. Also on the sidedecking part, that's still one third of a match that you automatically lose because of your opponent activating 1 card. Or you might not even know yet that your opponent plays Mystic Mine. Bottom right: Mystic Mine is arguably more oppressive than an Orcust board most of the time. And then you also realize that Mystic Mine is also being used in those decks that can already put up a lot of pressure and just make the whole thing even more oppressive. Bottom left: As they mentioned, Called by the Grave exists and is not only good against handtraps, but also against many other things, making it better to run than S/T removal for just one card. Once again the having to hard draw S/T removal argument, also hand traps are one thing that negate a card and then you can still do stuff, but Mystic Mine is continuous and doesn't allow you to do anything for multiple turns.
Lol not relevant but your avatar pic made me remember coming back to yugioh when I was in high school after not playing since I was a kid, I made a shitty deck and went on to dueling network, it was a rude introduction to xyzs when the dropped big eye on me 😂
@@zachherskovitz6162 it was just how I was introduced into what was "modern yugioh " I learned how to synch then xyz through playing bewd chaos, then moved into dragon rulers, lightsworns, skull servants, madolche, spyrals, and more recently dark warrior and salamangreats
I don't know if you ever mentioned this, but I am pretty sure the last mechanic a player agrees to be ok, directly tells you when they stopped playing. Most people that played casual gx and 5ds yugioh only in school and are now in their early or late 20s, aka probably a huge amount of people watching now. So you have the type of people that defend fusions and gx archetypes, while those younger most likely are ok with synchros, bc they were part of their everyday games at school. Unfortunately bringing up the meta of those times and explaining how yugioh back then was already not super slow, with no convoluted cards and combos whatsoever, won't help. Most likely bc these players never played anything other than casual, with a Deck of cards put together from some loose packs that were new at the time and starter/structure decks. They like inconsistent, bricky decks with just a handful of interaction between the cards, which ends up in long lasting duells with multiple turns and offer a lot of random and diverse interactions between two decks. It's just not that they ever liked yugioh for what it really was, but more so for their specific, personal experience only. Something that never really was and will never be again, blaiming everything on new game mechanics, without trying to look at the bigger picture.

Only thing i can think of is deliberately playing more cards to reduce the percentage chance of opening with a garnet. Then after you remove the garnet from the deck you upstart to deck thin.

Old school Yugioh was way more creative! We had a very limited card pool, 20+ mandatory overpriced staple cards and one competitive strategy! Now we have options and variety and innovative changes, I don't want to learn about combos, control and card advantage!!! Pot of Desires is a -9!!!!!!

I don’t understand why people hate modern Yu-Gi-Oh! so much. I picked it back up after not playing since I was a kid all the way back in Zoo format, many people even in the competitive scene hate this format because of how broken zoo was, yet I just started and I wasn’t mad at modern Yu-Gi-Oh! I was amazed, it was so insane to me how complex and skilful this game has become and it inspired me to learn the game and get better at the game and nowadays I’m mainly a meta player currently playing striker and just waiting for the banlist to see what’ll still be tier one next. I don’t get why it’s so bad to want to play the deck in a format with the highest ceiling and push the deck to its limits against all the other strategies in the format, yet people just seem to hate modern Yu-Gi-Oh! And modern meta decks .-.
I have a video request and I am genuinely serious with it and this is not a joke. "Reviewing Every Level 4 Normal Monster with Attack Between 1900 & 2000". Surprisingly, a lot can be said for the 24 monsters that make up this list.
honestly, as somebody, who dropped off from the game at the start of 5ds, but gradually got back to the game during the late zexal era, my main gripe with yugioh is how hard it is to remember cards and their full effects and all details mentioned in them. 2 weeks or a month of not being invested in the game too much and suddenly your budget builds of zombie horde and lair of darkness become like 40-page books you need to read and study again to know how to use.
I think a way to alleviate that issue is to use these keywords that players use a lot and assign them to the cards. For example if you're just thinking of Salamangreat Circle as a searcher rather than "okay so it can search a Salamangreat monster, OR I can make a reincarnated link unaffected by card effects this turn," or in a more relevant example, you just think of Baledroch (pretty sure I butchered that) as a negate and banish, and use that logic for most cards. Remember what they do, not what they say.
I like how a lot of people defend fusion summons like it’s this holy bastion of yugioh, but do most people realize that a lot of fusion monsters are incredibly degenerate? Like, you have blaze fenix, norden, independent nightingale, supreme king starving venom etc. Like did people think that these cards are just exempt from being broken because ‘my summoning mechanic is older, therefore better and exempt from criticism.’ I’m sorry you can’t except your vehicroid deck is bad, but don’t take it out on someone because they play a newer summoning mechanic.
As someone who quite Yu-Gi-Oh back when Synchro's came out. (Not because I dislike it but because I just grew out of it.) I have to say thank you so much. You showed me how much yugioh has changed (for the better), and you brought me to find Yu-Gi-Oh interesting again. Keep up the informative videos, we definitely need more of these.
Dude, I gotta watch that video first. RUclips never notifies me all your videos since I don't remember that video. Edit: your videos are like yugioh rabbit holes for me one leads to another. I'm watching 5 myths about old yugioh first then the rest.

I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh! on a regular basis up until the synchro era. Then I had to grow up and go to go college 😭. I’ve been watching your videos for about a year and it’s helped spark my love for the game again. (Which in turn got my friends to play again.) A lot of those commenters are either scared or discouraged to get back in the loop. But this modern format is very fun and thank you again for making these videos. Much love from New York :)
I mean it's typical shonen nonsense? Duel Monsters has nostalgia going for it, and the GX dub is just so ludicrous that it becomes hilarious (and then stops being funny as soon as they start actually becoming serious.)
@@user-ij2tb4mb4r the start of it is pretty stale but I like the cards in it. Pendulums are pretty cheap but at least they finally moved the pendulum scales to the spell/trap zone.
This is a huge problem I am also facing with some friends who sadly, end up playing Neos vs Pendulum Magicians and other fairly good/spammy decks that build 2+ Negate boards. And I think its a big problem of people just being introduced wrongly to the game. They think that the best decks are the norm these days and feel overwhelmed. Granted, if I just came back to the game after synchros and suddenly saw a crusadia deck puke their extra deck out, i'd probably also be like "What did I just witness?" But the problem is, they stop them. That ONE encounter is enough to make them go mad. Instead, a good person would inform themselves. Handtraps and such are great to deal with those "overwhelming" decks. Plus, consistency doesn't always exist for them either. It's weird, and its a big niche point of, I understand WHY people are like this, and I think Dev Pro isn't the best thing to get into after years of being MIA. But at the same time, I also expect people to actually... educate themselves... idk.
Basil I had the oposite reaction. The last time I played was in 2005, so coming back now with pendulum, xyz, links, etc was a bit disheartening, but then I thought “awesom, I want to learn all this new things”
That's actually the case with me (learning the rules after all). I stopped when synchros came out (but I was never that much into it - or many friends - and I buyed some pack and I couldn't use those white cards, even though they looked cool. Years later I wanted to try again and used YGOPro after I saw those weird blue Link Monsters - who looked cool and I just took one Cyberse deck. I tried different things and have some pretty entertaining duels against players ... even though I get FTK'd now and then ^^' Basically I learned the mechanics backwards from Link down to Sychro, with trying Pendulum last.
I will be honest for a quick second: I have played this game from the time where Dragon Rulers ran rampant, to the start of the link era, finding out that spirals, pendulum magicians and surprisingly, jank fabled quazar turbo to be my favorite decks. I love this game but took a quick hiatus from it, about 7-8 months As I came back I relaized that links are...kind of a problem from a design standpoint. Konami has to release support for archtypes that need those extradeck spots. They also made Ghostricks irelavant, so thats fun. Thats not the point however, I just wanted to say while I think the game is in a decent spot right now, powercreep seems to be reaching a peak with things like dangers, and even rouge decks such as Pendulum Magicians today are way stronger than the game has everbeen. i would talk about handtrap balancing, but that is way to complicated for my simple brain to understand. Thats all, have a wonderful day my dude
Might be weird to say but I appreciate the way that you talk. Not trailing your sentences off to barely audible words. Enunciating and giving emphasis on different words to make it more interesting to listen to. You could probably make the most mundane topics enjoyable
I won't say the new summonings like XYZ/Pendulum/links are bad per se, they just don't appeal to me..idk, their mechanics just doesn't let me enjoy the pacing of this game anymore, especially not the new board designs since pendulum or especially link.. I quitted when early/middle synchro where about to hit here in germany (we're always late here, probably it already was late synchro/early XYZ for the rest of the world), not because I didn't liked it, just didn't had enough time/money to bother with Yu-gi-oh in general. While your videos are very interesting and brought my interest back into the game, those said new mechanics just doesn't feel to me like the Yu-gi-oh I was used to know, but rather like a completely different game. At least you made fall in love with Yu-gi-oh so that I got myself Duel Links to keep up with my old times.
I’m new to Yu-Gi-Oh, I’ve knew it since I was like 5 but I’ve recently starting watching it on Netflix and I’ve finally started to get into it, I’m 16 and I understand the idea of polymerisation but synchro and link, I can accept that I have no relative knowledge on them. I don’t really know any of the modern decks or cards and only know the old ones from the show and a 2006 gameboy advance game such as dark magician, or the blue eyes white dragon and the various spell/ trap cards such as the spell binding circle and the magic hats. What I would like however, is a video which sums up the growth of Yu-Gi-Oh, Where you’d talk about the changes and give a general summary of synchro, link and any other modern stuff. I’m a collection myself but I do find it fun to play the mobile titles and duel against cpu’s. 😃😃😃

*Link Summoning is announced* Nobody: Me: Oh cool a new Summoning mechanic maybe this will make Pendulums harder to do *After Link Summoning* Cousin and Father: Link Summoning ruined Yu-Gi-Oh! We quit! Pendulum/Xyz Summoning was better!
I honestly think Yugioh is really fun even when they add new stuff into the game because it just means that people need to adapt and we all get to try out something new. I remember how excited I was for Links because it meant that something new and fun was changing the game and now I could watch and see how the meta adapted.
As for the player who thinks that everything beyond fusions should be erased, let me tell you about my brother My Brother has a Deck which has only a few plans of action. 1.) get to Exodia. 2.) summon the Egyptian god cards 3.) Summon Jinzo equip it with amplifer and summon Horus Lv. 8 so he can Lock you out of Traps and Spell cards and just sit on them while padding his dead with Gravekeepers to get his tribute fauder. He believers that Synchros, Xyz, Pendulums and I'm guessing Link Monsters were Mistakes and should be thanos snapped out of the game cause he would rather be the guy who wants to play the "Solitaire" version of Old School yugioh aka Sit on cards that shut off 2/3 of your deck and slowly kill you cause you can't do shit anymore.
I have to admit, a year ago I would have been one old school YGO fanatic, hating on the modern rules. The last cards I bought, before I Ieft YGO behind and switched over to MTG, were from roughly 14 years ago. Through some freak chance and some friends I came across legacy of the duelist. We played the shit out of that game and the way it introduces the new mechanics slowly for every series really helped me appreciate the new stuff, especially XYZs. I started collecting and playing again last year and to be honest, I don't regret it. Although I have one major gripe with the game. The card texts are way too bloated. I prefer the way magic does it, with key-words for simple effects and texts for more complex ideas. Nontheless I still prefer modern yugioh a lot over the slow and bricky YGO that we played almost 20 years ago.
I went 10 years without playing and can't stand the pace of the earlier formats, except when it's decks like Chaos which are also pretty fast and nutty.
"I summon a big beefy beatstick to beat your little less beefy beatstick" "Well I well summon an even bigger and beefier beatstick to beat your big beatstick" "Not so fast, I have a trap hole!" "WELL TO BAD THAT I CAN'T SEARCH SHIT AND DO NOT HAVE A SINGLE WAY OF RECOVERY! 'except maybe Monster reborn...." Yeah "good" old times. Altough the nostalgia is a factor, I like were they went with the game.
I like these type of videos, and I to will never understand why someone would deliberately search out a video they know they won't like. But hey, if they click on it wether they watch it fully or not and leave a negative comment, it is still a view!$$$$
The funny thing about me playing Yu-Gi-Oh is that i'm an OG player and I love syncros, xyz and links and I only deslike Pendulums because I'm too lazy to learn to play them eheheheh
Of course they don't. They're still salty from the last time they lost to a meta deck, instead of wanting to learn and get better. They honestly think meta is some sort of degenerate combo fest right now, and that somehow an unbelievably toxic card like Maxx C will keep it in check. As an example, anyway.
Depends the format is pretty balanced right but is somewhat long in the tooth in my opinion but if you have a year like Yu-Gi-Oh did in 2017-early 2018 where it's a never ending tier zero format between zoo, Draco zoo, true King Dino and spyral and then ftks I could see why someone would miss Maxx c.
Hi I'm a ex Yu-Gi-Oh player who has recently come back and the thing is some people should stop bitching about "how things are now" etc. As the French say c'est la vie
I liked the clips you put at the start of the MM video. If people leave funny comments because they think they’ve grasped the entire video from your intro, then that’s all the more reason to include those sorts of intros. ;p
Instead of mocking people for disliking what Yugioh has become, perhaps you should approach people in good faith. I consider the synchro era to be the best. The game was simple but interesting. XYZ summoning is fine. I just feel like after the synchro era, cards started having too many effects. Pendulum summoning seemed convoluted for no reason. Link summoning completely changed summoning from the extra deck, which understandably annoys older players. Overall, I think the game is too complicated with all the effects and mechanics. And also too fast in terms of searching and summoning boss monsters. And also new cards seem to be very overpowered.
We mock them because they lack proper reasoning and arguments. It's fine if you don't play Yugioh anymore, but if you are just too lazy to deal with the game right now, then don't say it's the game's fault.
Your patience is truly inspiring. Unrelated note, I like that you are using Junk Warrior as the thumbnail. He is my favorite Syncro. Wish Yusei had used him more...

hold on if they complain about yugioh with the links and Ftk's are they scrubs? I think they are scrubs
Ye. Cause.. There aren't really viable and consistent ftk's..... And if they are playing shit decks and are facing Striker, Danger Thunders, Salads or Orcust... Then why don't they adapt? :0
Before gx was goat format and before that was cookie cutter chaos. As someone who has played an insane amount of goat, I’d rather watch an opponent drop three monster with 1-2 back rows rather than see someone use greed and duo turn one. That stuff hurts my soul in a slow format as goat. And cookie cutter chaos from 03-04, those decks line up honestly can keep up with modern decks with the right guide tbh.
This is actually a great way to help older players that have been out of the loop. Such as myself it's hard to figure out what I need to learn and so on. Thanks for this video.
Those old school players think that their unga-bunga random digimon deck they usually play in the schoolyard is some top tier meta material, and thus creating the illusion that decks back then were "orginal" and "creative" when in fact, the top tier decks back then were one of the most unoriginal and uncreative deck in YuGiOh history because it contains only broken staples and broken monsters. That's what would happen if archetype wasn't a thing
I started play yugioh in 1st era. In my opinion 5DS was best introducet mechanic. I remember I loved to summon shooting stardust or quasar dragon in 1st turn with my fabled deck. In Zexal I didn't like xyz until I builded my favorite deck (evilswarm control). In Pendulum era I quited due to in my opinion too OP mechanic. I returned to yugioh few months ago. I still don't really know how pendulum summon from extra deck work and still lerning about Links but I think all mechanics are good and can work with older mechanic very well. When I see video of player summoning XYZ, synchro and Link in 1 turn I'm schocked how fast yugioh is now. It's hard for me to lern how to do so big combo but still yugioh is in good shape now. So in my opinion, yugioh is STILL best card game :)
Honestly they should ban dark synchro monsters (you know, those grey ones from the 5ds anime) because nobody uses them anyway and they ruin the game for me as an individual and I am entitled to my outdated opinion. Also we should ban all main deck cards and expand the extra deck to 1000 cards so I can just yeet them at my opponent one for one and win the game that way. Also obligatory comment about nostalgia boners for the dm anime and something about a fusion deck.
It’s been a year since I started getting back into Yugioh and for starters I built a Blue Eyes deck that had the Synchros in it. I was happy with it but I really can’t play it on the recent format. One year later with three regionals and one YCS with Sky Strikers, I’ve learned so much from your videos. I don’t think I’ll stop anytime soon. Don’t let these comments let you down as they’re part of the cycle of grief and they can’t get past the first step: ignorance. I’m still salty with one regionals though because you said Called by the Grave isn’t good so I dropped it. Then Round 1 I faced against Danger Darkworld. Not the FTK variant but it’s pretty deadly if it goes off. I’m still struggling making a top at a regional but I’m trying my best to prove myself how far I could carry my deck to its limit without using Mystic Mine. Hope you have a nice day Dzeeff and thank you if you ever get to read this comment.
There has never been a “death of Yu-Gi-Oh!” because it has always been supported by hundreds of thousands of people. The only thing even remotely to a said death of the franchise is only a slight decline in the player base of Yu-Gi-Oh! (which is usually due to a bad format). Otherwise Yu-Gi-Oh! has never died and in fact is thriving incredibly well right now with more people playing than many of the early years of Yu-Gi-Oh!
Look I'm more of the in the category of the old schoolers. In the past, I hated synchro summon because one I didn't understand how do they work which is why I didn't wanted to play anymore. FYI dzeff - I'm a casual player. Playing for nostalgic reasons. After a long break from yu-gi-oh, I got back around pendalum summon but I think near to link summon. I thought it was amazing. So I went to youtube, to see the newer things. I really love exceed summon. Like I said, I'm just a casual player so I wanted to know more. Videos like yours help me learn more in the current meta and some really hit to me because like I said I had that mindset in the past. But like the game I play constantly(DOTA2), there will always be people that played in the past that have grown fond to the past and don't want it to let go. I love your videos it really helps me understand the new meta of the game. Just let them say what they want to say, it is the internet after all. There will always be people like them.
I’m a returning player. I originally played from 2002-2006, and was hauled out of self-imposed retirement 11 years later in 2017. Turned to Duel Links and RUclips to learn and re-learn 11 years worth of missed material. After much experimentation with unsuccessful generic decks, I built my first competitive deck - Endymion / Pendulum Magician hybrid - this year. Rather than reject new summoning methods, Master Rules, etc., I chose to take the high road and adapt to modern Yu-Gi-Oh! It’s worked out well, and I have this channel, my duelist cousin and the amazing staff at my locals to thank for that. Moral of the story: Keep and open mind. Don’t knock modern Yu-Gi-Oh! before you actually try it. I did, and I find the game is faster, more fun and more exciting than ever before.
So Doug, I was having a bad day but this video was able to turn it around. Thank you for putting up with these comments and the insults that others throw at you. Also I was watching some of your older videos, and I was wondering if the structure deck reviews are ever coming back? Those are probably my favorite videos because it shows how Konami's game design philosophy has changed over the years.
I'm an old school player whose era is even before synchros, and I don't get the hate about new yu gi oh. It's an evolving game, like any other. And way dzeef explains things helps me understand how the game is nowadays, even though i don't play anymore. Thank You my man for all the interesting content.
Can we get a Commenters don't understand "Commenters don't understand" so we can see all the ridiculous retorts or further misunderstandings from the commenters don't understand videos?
I was the type of person to complain about new mechanics. Then I took the time and learnt how YuGiOh works now. GX was my favourite era of YuGiOh but I cannot deny how creative and how different each different deck I play feels. Also some of newer art is also really cool
As an ex-old school yu-first-oh player...I can’t actually believe that these commenters are complaining about synchro summons. Synchro monsters were amazing and pretty balanced mechanically. While I don’t have any experience nowadays, I know more than these people complaining do. Watching some videos of duels today can give enough insight to say that these commentators are just wrong about creativity being dead. I haven’t seen many duels, but every duelist is pretty creative and it’s quite skillful to know what cards work with each other. My only complaint is how fast the game has gotten with the ability to summon 11 monsters in one turn thanks to new and old summoning effect monster combined with xyz and link monsters, but that’s just my opinion.
Synchros are cool, xyz summons are cool, pendulums are ok, links are ok too, one of the worst things a yu gi oh fan can say is that og yu gi oh was the best the game has been, because what made me start playing was the complexity of the game mechanics and strategys, and also the art, thats very important too, but a world where yu gi oh didnt have crazy effects and insane combos is one i dont want to live in
To be honest, i also knew nothing about modern yugioh (synchros and after) and thought that yugioh "isn't what it used to be" but thanks to duel links i got accustomed with synchros and im looking forward for xyz coming to duel links !

Ex-Yugioh Player: Synchros have to much text.

Rescue Rabbit’s best friends + Garnet, eh?
honestly, as somebody, who dropped off from the game at the start of 5ds, but gradually got back to the game during the late zexal era, my main gripe with yugioh is how hard it is to remember cards and their full effects and all details mentioned in them.

Granted, if I just came back to the game after synchros and suddenly saw a crusadia deck puke their extra deck out, i'd probably also be like "What did I just witness?"
But the problem is, they stop them.
I tried different things and have some pretty entertaining duels against players ... even though I get FTK'd now and then ^^'
Basically I learned the mechanics backwards from Link down to Sychro, with trying Pendulum last.
@@FranciscoOyola94 for me it was the exact opposite, I was like "wow so much stuff to try now, this is much better than ever before".

This made me smile :) Thanks for the support!

"I summon a big beefy beatstick to beat your little less beefy beatstick"

I assume that is: It's life.

I didn't even understand 2002 Yu-Gi-Oh but here I am watching random videos on it
I started play yugioh in 1st era.
That feeling when they hate you because you are convenient, rest in peace XYZ monsters
“Instead of whining about the card come up with ways to beat it” well boys we did it dragon rulers can come back
I like how they hate synchro, xyz, pedulm and link and say they are op but cards like red eyes fusion and neos fusion exist
"Make it so fusion monsters can only be summoned by polymerization"
Laughs in Shaddoll and Predaplants
Dont forget Cyber Dragons.
What about xyz monsters
Laughs in half of D/D support
Gladiators!
Laughs in Gem-Knight
Seriously, that shit has too many fusion cards
Lol. For a sec I thought he meant commenters as in the official game commenters at the events.
Man, modern pokemon is awful. Level X monsters broke the game. Don't get me started on the gym leader pokemon that you don't even have to evolve!
Go download ygopro on your computer
YEEEEEEEEES god these vids r Why i live btw not a “commenters dont understand” Channel
*Boomers when they are told they can’t play their crumpled illegal (prolly bootleg) Obelisk first turn with no tributes or special summoning effects: “Damn fuck this game it’s BS now”
