The thumbnail is exactly what’s happening to my book. I got SOOO lucky to have found this. Hopefully whatever she says can help Edit: just did it & OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH 😭 I’m amazed! I can’t even recognize the section that was messed up! Looks BRAND NEW!
That was very helpful! It feels like so many book repair videos require some pretty specialized supplies, but this was all stuff my small school library either has on hand or can substitute for. Thanks!
Thank you sooo much! Sooo simple! I wore out my favorite soft cover Bible which is now split in two. I had no clue how to put it back together - I thought it would be so much more complicated than it is and it's been in disrepair for many years. I now know how to put it back together thanks to your simple tutorial. Very grateful.🥰
Rizwan, so true! Ha. I must admit that this was one of my first attempts at creating instructional videos for RUclips and the focus left a lot to be desired. Perhaps the focus deserves a Darwin award instead. :)
I really needed to see this because I just ordered my hard cover book and at first I just lost one page and then I saw her losing more than one page and then finally the whole book fell apart. As a customer obviously that really annoys me but as a writer it’s devastating in a way because I worked so hard on it but thank you for posting this
I had to repair some of my text books and guessed what had to be done. Watching your video, confirmed what I did was correct, repairing a hardcover textbook. I've got a 12kg anvil. I think that will do a good job at clamping.
Thank you!! I just used this technique on my nice hardcover copy of Salem’s Lot. I was bummed when a chunk of the pages separated from the spine, but this technique seemed to have worked!
what would you use on the edges of the hard back you fixed? I have a number of older books that have the leather pulling away from the book on the edge. I have glued the cover to the inside sheet to secure but now i wonder what I should put on the edges of the book to keep it from pulling apart.
Hi! it was so cool to know I could fix some of my books this way! I have a sketch book that's glue bound and individual pages come spilling out of it... While having papers fall out in a public setting and having a cool person pick it up with you is a great, movie worthy scene, its wildly embarrassing to have it happen IRL Could you please suggest some methods to fix my sketch book or perhaps group them in a way through which I can keep them in a book form without loosing the details at the top of my drawings? Thank you!
Ruth If your pages keep falling out then maybe you should get a spiral bound book cause those are sturdier. But if you can’t get one you could get paper clips and just clip a few pages together each time and then keep them in a little folder so that they wouldn’t spill out.Or you could just apply more pva glue on the spine.I think the spiral bound sketchbook are better.Just some suggestions
@@amplaysrobloxx966 Thank you very much! I'll try that! I also prefer spiral bound as the pages are well preserved that way. I got this one as a gift and the pages were of good quality that I didnt want to let go 😀😀
Marsela, I am so sorry for the late reply. The glue is polyvinyl acetate (PVA), which is commonly known as wood glue, white glue, etc. Standard Elmer's white glue that schools use is what I was referring to. We use a more archival version (neutral pH) in conservation, but the standard school glue is the same type of adhesive. It is great for bookbinding because it dries clear and it remains flexible, so the book continues to function well. Thanks for your question, and again so sorry for the VERY late reply!
Aditya, thank you for your question. I am not familiar with Fevicol. It looks like it works on wood or paper, but my question would be whether or not it remains flexible when it is dry. If it dries and is brittle, it wouldn't work well for this application. Also, I can't speak to the safety of Fevicol as a substance - looks like it has some potentially harmful chemicals in it. It's possible that it would yellow as it ages or else be too acidic for paper over time.
Hi, Mike. I would say that it works best when there are just a few pages that are loose. Sometimes a more extensive repair is needed when there are multiple pages like this. It is worth a try though as long as your book isn't something very precious that you wouldn't want to mess up.
@@Mike_v_E I figured I was too late, but I only saw your comment today. I am so sorry I couldn't be more helpful at the time. Glad to hear you repaired your book!
Hi, Brian. Apologies for the VERY late reply. Yes, PVA type glues are best as they dry clear and remain flexible once dry. Regular white school glue is a type of PVA. There are also neutral pH versions that you can easily find online or in your local craft store.
I tried this and it didn't work. You need to bind the pages with twine or metal staples. Just look up some other book binding videos. It is more involved but it will be a much better repair.
Hi, Ben. Thanks for your comments and I deeply apologize for my late response. This series of videos was originally created for School Media Specialists who needed quick and easy repairs to get children's books back in circulation. The methods represented in the video are not always best practices, rather they are best when there is no budget and very little time. I am sorry to hear it didn't work for your book though!
@@uncgarchives It worked pretty great for me. I bought a trade paperback, that almost immediately started falling apart as soon as I started reading it. one section nearly came complete out, and that was causing other sections to start tearing away. I caused some minor damage myself to the spine being too aggressive with some inappropriate tools, but other than that, it worked perfectly. I've thumbed through it a few times and it seems it will hold up for me as long as I treat it with respect, or long enough to sell if I decide to do that. If I do sell it, I'll tell them that I rebound it myself, that's where the spine damage came from. THANKS!
Well considering she only applied a small amount of glue to the break in the pages, it should not stick the pages together, but only reinforce and cover the gap.
Hi, Ben. I am so sorry I am only now seeing your question. It looks like you received some good replies below. Wax paper is a good back up plan as well as just being very careful with where you apply the glue. The pages may not open quite as widely as before since they will be losing a little space at the margin. Just mask off the area with a strip of paper and you can be more careful to only get glue where you want it to be.
what is the best of the bokk- the story, the language, the writing and are there any bad thing- yes, you have to clue all the 500 pages and the 30 pages which have written the author. you have to repair the book so it did not fall apart. 😑😑 thank you for the video i tried at first duct tape it is exhausting, i will read later
Here I was thinking hadback books were all smyth sewn, hehe... but it looks like this 1980 Zane Gray collection is put together like a paperback with hard covers.
"and the publisher's adhesive starts to break down"....since when did book publishers use adhesives? Seriously though, a pretty good demonstration, thanks for posting.
Fair question, Edward. This series of videos was originally created for School Media Specialists as a repair that could be accomplished with very little money and time. It does not represent best practices in book conservation, but rather a quick way to get a book back into circulation. Perhaps these are "best we can" practices. :)

Ruth, you can take the book to a printer or office supply store like Staples and they can install a spiral for you.

Which adhesive used in spine?

Good .thank you .
Won’t this stick the pages together?

Just stick lah
You can use waxed paper strips between the pages to be sure the glue doesn't go where you don't want it.

Adhesive bindings inside boards are a slightly cheaper option than machine-sewing, so yeah, that happens.
What if the ENTIRE strip of glue falls off the whole spine?
