    I love how they flipped the roles in this number. Both times they did it were Donald really showcased his tenor voice. They should have gotten an award for this, they were absolutely magnificent. Also the music for each part was sensational. Leave it to Irving Berlin.

    Keeping to your own melody line while you've got Ethel Merman belting a counter-melody in your ear is no easy feat. Like singing Happy Birthday under the flight path at JFK airport.

      Very true, but this was recorded as a track and they lip-synced to it. I'm sure that made it easier. Otherwise you'd be blown out of sync.

      Most young people never heard of two part counterpoint harmony. Extremely difficult to synchronize two voices singing in opposition and end together to boot!

    When Ethel was working on Call Me Madam she told Irving Berlin she wanted one more really great number in the second act. He worked all night to come up with this 'cross-talk' classic. When they sang it for her she said 'My God, they won't let us off the stage!" And its true, the first night in Philadelphia, they got SEVEN ENCORES for this.

    Back in the mid 80s, some friends of ours were planning on having our town’s “First Annual Ethel Merman Look Alike Luau”. We had some party favors ordered and ideas gathering….then she died!! And so did our party plans. I think she was great. Dick Caveat had her on his show and they sang this song. You can find the clip here on YT

    I have listened to Dick Haymes and Russell Nye sing this song...but I have to say that I genuinely think that Donald brings more lyrical and dramatic emotion, plus a melodious and mellifluous element that is missing from the other two. His singing perfectly matches Ethel's but is never overwhelmed by hers (not an easy thing )..Even though Donald said that his part of the song was recorded in an isolation booth because Ethel's singing was at full power and he had to wear ear plugs for the shoot , he brings true delight to this song.
    Donald's voice has an amazing range . He shows his lifelong experience (even though he is only @ 27 in this movie)
    I do love Donald .

      @@bobbywimsy6741 I would have much preferred Sanders as Emile, than Pinza. Pinza's voice has a very prominent and annoying vibrato. Sanders' voice is much smoother. And no, it's not that I don't like opera singers. I'm very much an opera fan, but my idea of an operatic bass is Samuel Ramey with his elegant, rich basso cantante.

      The song succeeds because of the contrast between the two . Ethel Merman was basically a live performer. She was too big for the screen, but this wonderful tune stopped the show every night on Broadway.

  • @eNigma011
    @eNigma011 5 месяцев назад

    Was the second version(where Ethel Merman and Donald O'Conner switch lead song roles) an alternate take not used in the film? The set is the same but I don't recall this version in the 1953 film.
    By the way ETHEL CAN SING SOFTLY!

  • @davidreidenberg9941
    @davidreidenberg9941 Год назад +1

    This is the only time that the Merm was really allowed to do her stuff on the screen. She was just too big for the screen. BTW that was George Sanders’ singing voice. He was a fine baritone.

  • @andrewmiller4885
    @andrewmiller4885 2 года назад +17

    I could never understand Ethel Merman's fame . I never liked her voice . She was nothing more than a very loud harsh abrasive belter, who I think secretly liked drowning people out .
    Donald O'Connor on the hand had a truly lovely voice which was never utilized enough in his films. He was very talented , a great actor, dancer, singer and comedian . Donald was so underrated, because he really was one of the Hollywood greats . Donald was more than able to hold his own here not only against Madam Foghorn but also against an opposing melody at the same time . Donald O'Connor was a huge talent and real pro. I miss great stars of his caliber.......sigh .

      When I was about 10 years-old and living in Galveston , Texas (about 1961), there was this young woman living in an apartment (part of a large house-where my little brother stayed after school). This young woman was showing us pictures of Donald O’Connor and herself in Las Vegas. She had been a show girl in Vegas.

    • @johnindo6771
      @johnindo6771 3 года назад

      I read an autobiography by George Sanders along with a book about him by another author. There was a lot of discussion about George Sander”s mental health issues. George Sanders had a beautiful voice, and worked very hard and put a ton of effort and money putting himself in the crosshairs of one of the top honchos in charge of the musical, “South Pacific” playing on Broadway. The lead male singer/ actor of “South Pacific” , was leaving the show. George Sanders got the part. Upon hearing that he got the part, George suddenly came down with this pain in his body-maybe his back . As soon as George notified the powers-that-be that he could not take the part in “South Pacific”, the pain went away. George did commit suicide (I think at age 65). Both George and his brother, Tom Conway, liked their booze too much. Especially, Tom. There is a great story about how Zsa Zsa Gabor gave Tom some money (I think that it was $200) during Tom’s last hospitalization. Zsa Zsa told Tom to use the money to tip the nurses so that the nurses would (hopefully) take better care of him. Instead Tom escaped from the hospital, bought a ton of booze, and went to an old girlfriend’s abode and ended up dying in her bed. I also read where George had “washed his hands “ of Tom because of Tom’s alcoholism and lack of money.
