Lyrics:
I know your antiseptic
Your deodorant smells nice
I'd like to get to know you
You're deep frozen like the ice
-chorus-:
She's a germ free adolescent
Cleanliness is her obsession
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away scrub away scrub away
The S.R. way....
You may get to touch her
If your gloves are sterilised
Rinse your mouth with listerine
Blow disinfectant in her eyes
chorus
Her phobia is infection
She needs one to survive
It's her built-in protection
Without fear she'd give up and die
chorus
She's a germ free adolescent
Cleanliness is her obsession
(x4)
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away scrub away scrub away
The S.R. way....
Here in 2023. Fantastic punk band and their music before it’s time.
I'm so happy to find other people that remember such cool shit. Fuck, we're old.
+Glenn Taylor maybe old, but the spirit is young .
John Peel
I used to fancy her I was only 10 at the time, but what a time to be alive feel sorry for today's kids all that massed produced shat they are spoon fed no originality,no passion and no message just blah blah blah nonsense
No daddio .....your only as old as the hippy you are feeling ......i am a survivor of the flare wars....
I listen to an old fave but sad at the same time. So much talent gone to early RIP X X
This song reminds me of my very young childhood, my sister used to play this all the time. Great memories.
Massively underrated song.
I agree‼️👍
Absolutely 👍
even more intelligent and clued up than I realised when I was 14. The view that our consumerism obessed society is not so great has never been more relevant.
yep i just saw it sooooooooooo god rest in peace lovely lady and breast cancer is a killer so i hug all women who are going through it or who have fought it and won and lost and i say stand tall girls we will win this battle , god bless lovely poly xx
For me, she was by far and away the most underrated and under celebrated vocalists of all time.
Germfree Adolescents always was and always will be one of my favourite albums ever.
RIP Pol
You will always be in our hearts and minds. Your memory will always live on Poly!
Farewell Poly, Glad I got to see you when you were on top form. R.I.P.
I remember buying this when I was 16 and it struck a chord being a germ-free adolescent myself at the time. I had no idea until someone posted here that the song was about a rape victim.
I also met her on a train on my way to a party in Gatwick around 1981. She was polite but wouldn't even admit that it was her, although we knew it was :) ( there were a bunch of us dressed up in old sheets mean to be togas!)
there's something very sexy about this lady - amazin voice , song and performance - i miss those 70's days
The lyrics of Poly Styrene s songs are thought provoking and show she had a rare insight into people's attitudes in the modern world.
It's hard to believe it's now eight years since she passed away.
RIP Poly, gone but never forgotten.
RIP POLLY STYRENE. SADLY MISSED. WHAT A TALENT
My sister was her dental nurse and got me her braces which I wore on a chain .We lost her far too young .Great loss .
Gods and GODDESS all in Polly Styrene and the X-Ray Spex
brilliant, bought the album afer one listen to this on TOTP and i was late 20s then, best punk record ever
I was 13 and a half when this made the charts. Still brings a tear to my eyes. God bless you Polly.
I was 17
I love how her voice breaks when she sings.
Makes the song seem so much more meaningful.
Nice tank top at the end!
Amazin talent, amazing woman, am gutted. RIP.
Listening and reminiscing in 2024. These were good times.
The world is certainly a lot duller and a lot less day-glo today with the passing of Poly Styrene. I bought the X-Ray Spex album when it was released and giggled at some of the clever, tongue-in-cheek lyrics. The sad thing is that she released a new album last month that was her best musical offering since then. Check out 'Generation Indigo'.
she was unique and rather wonderful. a great sound.
RIP Poly - this was the sound of my teenage years and stays with me - a great talent - you will be missed xxx
a big soft spot for this,ah early teenage years with all your life ahead not realizing how f*****g quick it would fly,oh for one more go please!
+Mike Abbertto ... aint that the truth Mike
+Mike Abbertto perfectly expressed, I want to go back too please!
If only mate, l would be there in a shot.
Agreed
robin9997 Be a bloody long queue for sure!
RIP Poly, grew up listening to you. Unique talent
Still love singing this in the shower 😂
She starts singing, I start crying.
Same.
rest in peace polly you brought many happy days to a teenager in the late 70s
Some times in your life are captured like a polaroid and never fade, one of mine is me rockin to TOTP and my mum seeing first X-ray spex then Roy Wood & Wizzard with his starry eye make-up and giving a "what is the world coming to" rant
i used to borrow this record of my brother at the time of its release and many more of his collection.he had good taste i realise later on in life.
Yes in watched her documentary last night - remembered it from '78. I remembered the feelings of being skinny and ugly and full of teenage angst...........and when Polly came on "top of the pops"i thought it was great coz she wasnt a typical beauty but had a strong and special presence. Thanks for that Polly. Rest In Peace xxx
loved this song for a very long time.. 💔❤
I cant stop listening to this. So many memories of that moment, in time.
You and me both. At least we're not alone.
Yes me too. This one represents all of that time so well. RIP Polly We all love you.
Also in Leeds this is only song containing word disinfectant.older brother was hard core punk at times .me at 14 was turning my head towards rockabilly .in 1982 was 18 heading to Scarborough on August bank holiday rose at 5.00 am got in mark 2 ford escort totally hung over feeling really bad only been awake 10 mins .driver put this on outside my house really loud .not really our style .not what you want to hear when hung over hated it since . 38 years of hate till now grown on me again
Shaun Dixon Scarborough along the Seashore, eating in Richard the 3rds, House. Priceless. Thanks for reminding me of Scarborough, where I had a tooth knocked out by, Mad Harry. The tooth was a cap anyway, he headbutted me he did, Mad Harry. Scarborough, and Penarth. Are close, to my 57 year old heart. Thanks for Your Kind Memories. I Salute You. Kind Sir.
Poly, you made the world a better place. Cheers from Ecuador.
I love that comment. I love your name...I hope with all my heart that you are doing wonderfully well now - six years since you made your comment.

Blimey, I commentated 11 years ago. How time drags. This is a very good. underrated song
One of the best songs ever written, both lyrically and musically; takes me back in time. Would that Polly still be with us, she was a one off, not always easy to be.
I'm having it played at my funeral
Recently discovered x-Ray spex an absolutely love this.... What a shame only 53 RIP POLY 🙏🏻
was fur ein lied. tolle tolle und wieder tolle. polly danke. du hast etwas tolle am der welt gegeben.
remember seeing this as a teen on top of the pops poly just stood out she was striking! love x ray spex still got that album with the test tubes one of the best album covers ever.
I bought thier LP back in 1978 & still have it! One for the best punk bands & one the best albums. Brilliant voice, hard & fast sound with some of the best saxaphone I've heard since the Stooges!
I used to play this over and over on my fidelity record player. RIP Ms Poly Styrene x
R.I.P.P. rest,in,punk, peace. you brought us all so much joy from your music!!!!! rest now for a short while and then get heaven ready for all us old punks to come join you!!!! XXXX love c
Rest in peace beautiful poly you are an icon and legend and brightened and enlightened my life so much back then when i was young x
Marianne Elliott-Said [ poly Styrene] 1957- 2011
A song about an O.C.D. Germ-a-Phob Teenage Girl who uses fear of infection to avoid human contact. - and “cleans her teeth 10 times a day”. “Scrub Away! The S.R. Way” (from a British Tooth Paste advertisement jingle.) - “She's a germ free adolescent, cleanliness is her obsession”
she's just as pretty as her voice. this is my first time hearing this song. i love it, i'm gonna put it on repeat!!
The best song from any punk group, and they were no where near the best punk group.
...I just Loved this woman... I vividly remember me and my pals playing the The Day the World Turned Dayglo over an and over again when it came out in 1978... it was a 45 single and I was just so impressed by her... sigh... I really really miss her... but thank you for you magnificent music Poly... Hug to you wherever you are...
My favourite of X-Ray Spex. First heard it 24 years ago and made such an impact on a young girl. RIP Poly.
I got into X-Ray Spex in the early 90's and instantly loved them. Poly wore braces, made clothing out of bin bags and the band made and created songs the way they wanted to. It felt like I was listening to, you know, normal human beings having fun and creating great music. It's a sad thing that it seemed like such a rarity then, sadder now.
RIP Poly. How refreshing to be reminded of the music of our youth, unlike the shite around today.Great memories x
cant describe how beautiful poly styrene was to me at 12 in 78 nor how important she was.all the tattoos in the world cant replace sincerity.this woman was the real deal
Absolute classic. She had class.
brilliant...i used to live round the corner to the lead singer...she used to look so COOL|!!!...cant believe its on here ...thanx.xx
Shane McGowan heard this song and never brushed his teeth since!!
Slightly ironic to wear braces whilst singing about toothpaste.
Still she is a beautiful woman with a lovely voice and seems a wonderful person in the interview I just watched when she was 16-17ish.
RIP pretty girl nice to see you are of part Irish descent like many great female singers!!
Had the album on today, still sounds as fresh as ever. A truly great band.
Gorgeous ❤ God I love this song xx
Major ''one off'' vocal...tune...total sound and so unique!!....of all the songs from that era this one just stands out on its own!!
My sis fav band. Miss her big time 🥺.. she passed away 3 yrs ago
Amazing band, great natural voice heard way above most of the dross about at the time.... Hard to replace a talent like this. RIP Poly
heard this track on the film fast colour can't believe this forgotten gem doesn't get any air time anywhere anymore ; i remember this i was just 17 at the time into bikes i had a 250cc bsa c15 and the summer days stretched away into infinity thank you polystyrene and the x ray specs for the music .
Raw talent.
My type of girl, Great voice,R.I.P. Babe.
good quality, and a good song. I wasnt around in 1970s. Born in 1990s!
God bless ya Poly singer of my much misspent youth in the 70s n 80s , 9yrs since you were taken, way to young R.I.P .
Love this singer and band - Was just under 4 when they did this song, but listened to it when I was 35 and could hardly believe that they did so well! - I do love her voice, the lyrics of all their songs.
Far more revolutionary than the anti-establishment songs of today.
Rest in peace Poly. You were a phenomenal and under-appreciated talent. You should have been making music to this very day.
So very good. She is weeping for her generation. Boy, I was only 11 or 12 when this came out and it moved me even then, unfeeling little twerp that I was. Can anyone think of a more impassioned vocal performance than this?
+fritzthedog007 will you, hazel o'connor
weeping for her generation yes.I discovered last week (facebook,'friends reunited' type page) that the school I left 39 years ago was a factory of despair. The girls were vicious to each other in particular apparently, while being themselves predated upon by the masters, and creeped out by the female PE teachers. The boys meanwhile had to endure physical pain from canings and being forced to play team sports while frozen half-to death. For myself (not a sportsman nor emotionally mature for my age) the physical knocks establishing my lowly social condition and the humiliation to keep me there added up to a bucket load of no good. It took me until now to find out that ANY others felt as miserable.
"When only Polly Styrene understands you - you know you are in trouble". I was lucky,I had good parents (who being popular and physical - mom and dad respectively - couldn't understand at all why I was so quiet). I wsas also from a higher class than some, clever and white. So Bog knows how many other germ-free youth turned into wrecks.
Cue that song again "I knaow you're anti-septiiic, your deaodoarant smells niiiiiiiiiice . . . . .". Poor Polly. Poor us.
True classic, lucky enough to see them live, top band, Poly’s voice though 😍
Although I was a child of the 90's, my dad got me into Punk music during the 00's.
I have many albums and one of my favs is of Xray-Spex, absolutely love this song.
Shame you got taken away so young.
RIP Polly.
My all-time favourite Tune is this, an yeah it does kind of make me feel old but hey,,,I am old, but this tune in particular takes me right bk 2 the day I bought this tune,. A lifetime ago now, wow.
So sad about Poly
Loved her and this beautiful music.
Hugs & kisses Poly RIP
One of my favourite tracks! Brilliant artist
This tune takes me back to happier days . Rip Polly x
One of my all time favourite songs, I just love it , adore polly ❤❤❤
So sad she's gone, much too young.
Fantastic voice - one in a million.
All my love and best wishes to her family and friends. x
God bless Polly for giving me an amazing youth that brings back so many wonderful memories like this one. R.I.P. Dear Polly.
This was on the jukebox at the old Labour Club in Whitstable back in the 90’s. Many a good night spent under the railway arches, happy days!
RIP Poly, I'll never forget when I saw you at The Marquee in 77... bless x
RIP. A true original from late in the punk era. Some people say little girls should be seen and not heard. But I say Oh Bondage, Up Yours!
Utterly brilliant. The first time this had ever been said. Needed saying too. She really nailed it. The band is really tight too. Who said punks couldn’t play?! Try playing it!!!
Great song, great band, very underrated singer. I saw XRS live in 1979 and was spellbound by how musically tight they were. Listen at the baseline. Brilliant post. Thanks
r.i.p poly. ur music touched me when i was a kid,i brought this album [germ free adolescents] on its release, loved it. you will be missed but not forgoten.xxx
3 years ago today, still missed, still loved, even if they made you swap Listerine for Glycerin, thank you for the love, the songs and the memories RIP xx
nicely said Gwen :)
just noticed that she sang 'glycerin', and was going to post it but saw your post. The 'SR way' seems to have been left though...Poly is a legend, taken too soon :(
I can never get fed up with listening and watching. Thanks for sharing,Shared again.
THIS ONE OF THE MOST BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES EVER, ACCORDING TO ME, FROM ANY GENRE, BY POLYSTYRENE AND XRAYSPEX, I LOVE ALL GENRES OF PERFORMANCE, BUT TO PERFORM DOWN IN TO A PUNK BALLAD WAS INCREDIBLE FROM A FULL FRONTAL HIGH ENERGY PUNK ASSAULT AS IN, OH BONDAGE UP YOURS, TO THIS, IS PURE ELATION TO A MUSIC PERSON LIKE MYSELF.
Just introducing my 4 year old to the music of my youth. Sadly missed.
Oh, man, that’s great! I guess we can only plant seeds & see what grows but, like my own wee girl, she is free to choose whatever she wants but no harm broadening the options! Here’s to you & your kid, Richard.
A Peruvian TV presenter called Cucho recommended me this song. Really great!!
Great song. Great lyrics. Fascinated by it when I bought it from a second hand shop back in the mists of time.still sounds class today.
Such a brilliant voice, the melodies on this break your heart...'twas a more innocent time :/ R.I.P. Poly x
I was so in love with Poly Styrene when I was a kid.
Remember listening to this in a music lesson @ Chaseterrace high school. So Original & has a good tune.
Thanks for the good quality. Growing up in the 70's, this song captured the times. The drug use as well. They put funny stuff in the joints, like PCP, up to the early 80's. I have a good memory, I think ;-)
This is a great song. I remember hearing this on the radio in the seventies - one of the few new wave/punk songs they would actually play. It is a great shame that Polly is no longer with us.
What a girl. She hit me with Germ Free Adolescence. Scrub away scruub away the SR way. Poetry
Bringing memories back to my youth in the 70s so awesome
An immeasurably sad day and a great loss to us all. She was just great.
I think I was 9 when this came out. Something about this song got me hooked and reeled me in even at that age. I love it to this day.
I'm sad I didnt grow up with music like this. Thank god there's cds and youtube so you can see and hear all the awesome moments. Rip Polly
Years ahead of their time. Love this song.
This subject like so many of X-ray Spex other tracks - quite simply years ahead of their time but no one realised it
