God i love it how she can scream that song with total punk energy but still give off a positive vibe. not whiney and bitching just striaght up honest and unique. thats so rare to find these days she will be greatly missed.
Who would believe that this is 35 years old? And in another 35 years we will be asking the same question. Still way ahead of its time and at the same time giving nods to rock and roll, jazz and blues. That was the magic of X Ray Spex- a bunch of kids headed by a phenominally talented Scottish/Somalian songwriter who wore braces and her grandmothers hand-me-downs. RIP Poly- The Queen Of Punk.
I was 14 then.. I loved this tune, as I did many others at the time by the Clash, Pistols, Buzzcocks etc. Such a great era to become musically inspired. I got my first drum kit in the same year, and went on to play with many bands over the years.
We didn't have PC's or Cell phones.......but we had Punk clubs and New Wave Discos where you could see these bands and DANCE your freakin' butt off.......Oh yeah.....and we had POLY STYRENE! I will love her forever......
cardiff top rank club unbeliveable.....ruts.slf.x ray as above....i could go on and on..best time ever to be 17 in 78...... still i bet every generation says that...
I saw this on a documentary about the early years of punk the other day and it's been stuck in my head ever since. Great song. Her voice is addicting in a way.
I have a big problem with people who say they don’t see colour but I really didn’t clock that she was mixed race for some reason. The lyrics make so much more sense now. God bless her! So remember jumping around to this one
I so adore her look, she was a true Punk. Many Punks were so very much followers in a way and Poly looked how she wanted, she wore bright colours and did it how she wanted to do it.
Oh no not another one! All my teenage idols going going gone! What an amazing punk band this was and what a unique artist. RIP Polly! Rob (who talked to you on a train once out of Kentish Town in 1988/9.) Respect.
Written & performed by the Scottish/Somalian Goddess Of Punk who wore her teeth in braces and what looked like her Grandmothers hand-me-downs. Timeless!
Such a sad loss of talent................RIP indeed but not to quietly though eh! One of my all time favourite track, not just from the 70's but for all time. Tracked this down to "educate" my nephew about music. Thanks for posting.
AN AWESOME PERIOD PIECE IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC PERFORMANCES.I COULD WATCH THIS AGAIN AND AGAIN TILL THE DAY I DIE, HOPE I FIND APPRECIATION FROM MY CARERS IN THE NURSING HOME, SHOULD I END MY LIFE THERE
I had such a crush on Polly Styrene back in those days. I had to find out through a RUclips video that she died in 2012. It's still an incredible loss.
I was 13 when I first heard this. Blew me away with its strangeness. Loved it and Poly Styrene was a bit of a crush. All the legends die before their time. Hope she saved me a place at the bar 😁
It was one of her favourite. It had a lot to do with her mixed heritage Sudanese back ground and did at one time cause an identity crisis for her I think she found herself in punk.
Yeeears after and still they rock. The pandemic has its positives. All I remembered was germ free Adolescence but at this time I watched interviews and listened to there back catologue. She was really likeable and the music rocks.
i'm another old codger lucky enough to have seen the Clash (their penultimate show with Mick)...for those of the younger generation, there is a cool show called "punk rock karaoke" that tours in the states (maybe europe too?)...the band is made up of guys from various famous punk bands, and they play and people from the audience sing...but they really sing well. played Buzzcocks, Ramones, Clash, Sex Pistols, etc...it's the next-best thing to having "been there." cheers from brazil!
I remember me and my mate bought a pair of dayglo socks each, mine lime green, his pink. We then exchanged one with each other so we had odd socks like on their album cover.happy days.
I always remember going to the first X Spec gig and sensing they were going to be big and oh boy they became just that .RIP Polls your music lives on and your bollocks up yours attitude .
God i love it how she can scream that song with total punk energy but still give off a positive vibe. not whiney and bitching just striaght up honest and unique. thats so rare to find these days she will be greatly missed.
Polly wasn't one of a kind, but she was the first of her kind. RIP to a fucking legend.
Brilliant innit!
Well expressed. My thoughts too
Amazing
Whining and bitching?
Poly was the queen of punk for me , just the real deal
She only saw it as Fashion
Fucken oath
"Identity is the crisis" - Words that I'll live by for the rest of my life.
So very true
Especially now with mad Scots trans bills and more to come identity is the crisis you can see, x-Ray decades ahead of their time
Fantastic vocalist...she is a legend
She was trained in opera! That's the secret!

Stuck in my 70s platforms and Motown, then poly came along and woke me up! Wow .
It's truly sad to see the original, true punk artists go. RIP Polly.

Brilliant song . Poly you are a sad loss. The world though is a better place for your music.
Pol dancing about in '50's nan-clothes still makes me laff.. god bless her for her sense of fun.
Punk's not dead! Never be and never will! You're a poser if you thought punk is dead! Punk is a spirit, not a trend!
...
Alex Bluez I am a poseur and I don't care, I like to make people stare!
Punk is dead bunch of pussies doing it for the fashion.
@@Joemammaonmytip Still better than rap crap, hippy hoppy, drill music (whatever that is) and rubbish like Little Mix,,Dua Lipa and Beeeyonceee.
Let’s be real, punk died when the analog world it was born in died. Punk isn’t compatible with the digital age.

X-ray Spex and Dead Kennedys, you're clearly a person of culture!

I have a big problem with people who say they don’t see colour but I really didn’t clock that she was mixed race for some reason. The lyrics make so much more sense now. God bless her! So remember jumping around to this one
Just discovered them and her. I have no words for how cool this is.
Has anyone noticed that musical prophets never live to get old. Take note 😁✌️
What😳
Still luv this!!!❤
superb - and even better live
What a talent.
I so adore her look, she was a true Punk. Many Punks were so very much followers in a way and Poly looked how she wanted, she wore bright colours and did it how she wanted to do it.

Rob (who talked to you on a train once out of Kentish Town in 1988/9.)
Respect.
Robin ,she's not forgotten here in 2022
These lyrics are so relevant to todays youth , shame they haven't got the same attitude we had in the late seventies , RIP Poly
You may be gone, but I'm still listening. SCREAMING.
TYPICAL SONG FROM THE COLD WAR ERA
SO GLAD I GREW UP IN THE MARVELOUS 80’S... OH OUI !
WHAT A GREAT ERA! I’M GLAD THAT I LIVED THROUGH IT. OH OUI !
RIP Polly...a true great and pioneer x
This never loses the ability to thrill
Poly was the greatest.
classic - back when music was exciting... Punk with real brass.
Written & performed by the Scottish/Somalian Goddess Of Punk who wore her teeth in braces and what looked like her Grandmothers hand-me-downs. Timeless!
She's just a legend
Grande indimenticabile Poly Styrene, ancora oggi saresti all'avanguardia, come allora...

Classic from X Ray Spex - Genius Musical Art
So so sad,, just reading the comments below, I can relate to many of them. RIP Poly,, thanks for the music, the memories and the gigs,,
A very sad day....one of the true stars of punk rock.
Such a sad loss of talent................RIP indeed but not to quietly though eh!
One of my all time favourite track, not just from the 70's but for all time. Tracked this down to "educate" my nephew about music. Thanks for posting.
I realize I've become old every time I hear Poly & lament "they don't make em' like these anymore"

That voice
This was genuine punk and poor Polly RIP

Makes my ears hurt, yet this album is one of my favourite to come out of the punk era! So so good!
I was so born in the wrong decade... :( 70s and 80s were amazing!!
R.I.P poly
The older I get the more of my childhood is dissappearing. R.I.P. Poly. Hell of a band.

RIP Polly. 🌹🌹🌹
A very powerful song still applies today! Ahead of her time!😎💕
love the cheeky zoom in on the MI5 building :D
One of my fave punk songs EVER. Well, that is, by a female fronted band.
The greatest single ever made...thank you so much.
She was really likeable and the music rocks.

punk rock of the highest quality, provoking thought and questioning the status quo.
A great song by a great band.
Punk didn't die in 79, It just moved to Redondo Beach, Ca.
Sad to hear she has gone. The memories of identity being played loud & proud at the Christo Rubery will live on
Ladies and gentlemen, this is PUNK!
Gostei ! Pois tem um estilo único
Brilliant one off original band takes me back to being a teenager & getting into punk etc.
I always remember going to the first X Spec gig and sensing they were going to be big and oh boy they became just that .RIP Polls your music lives on and your bollocks up yours attitude .
