I bought this '86 Nissan Stanza Wagon a few years ago, and unfortunately I just haven't driven it much in the last year or so. But that is about to change! I've finally come to realize that I'll never fix everything on this car if I have to do all the work myself. So today we get it over to the shop to help refresh this odd old car. Mechanic Joe takes on a tour of what's wrong, what he fixed, and also provides some valuable insight about working on older vehicles.
Thanks again to Joe for bringing the knowledge and helping keep this weird car on the road. If you live in the Los Angeles area and need work done on your car, Joe can help you out. Hit up Sean's Auto Care in Van Nuys, CA: (310) 770-2720.

@@revolution1one well, there are some out there. My wagon has the white letter tires, on the rs 5 spoke wheels, it's maroon with the red "cavalier RS" badging etc. Tan interior. It was an impulse buy, while I was visiting family in Conway SC. No rust etc. Fades paint, saggy headliner etc, but I changed the fluids, set of brakes and I drove it back to NY trouble free. It'll be cleaned up, painted, I'll probably throw a spare Z24 hood and airbox I have laying around onto it. Already swapped a Z24 front bumper onto it. Finding a mechanic who cares, is willing to work on an old car, explains the 5 W's of the failure states, is proactive about solutions and cares is a rarity and is generally in conflict with the shops bottom line. Hold on to that guy because shops like that usually go out of business, I should know I've worked in many of them and the chainstores and franchises take over with their economies of scale, low wages and hiring employees who aren't paid enough to care or are at the beginning of their automotive learning curve. Just don't call him a wizard or ninja or something ridiculous like that... although what do I know, that sort of behaviour could grow your channel to a 7 digit subscriber base, it's happened before I think.

But, I had 3 kids in car seats and it was what we needed at the time.( was cheap to buy, we didn't make a lot of money back then) Mechanically, this car was always solid. We had no problems with dependability. The only reason we got rid of it was because the sliders started to stick and became hard to open and close.

Instead, you should find owners of underappreciated, forgotten, unloved cars from the 80s and 90s and ask to review their cars (a la Doug Demuro): chevy prizm, geo storm, mercury capri, daewoo leganza, cadillac allante, buick reatta, alfa romeo milano, pugeot 405, oldsmobile intrigue, chevy citation, hyundai excel, mazda mp3....and a ton of other forgotten gems. You would be fillng an untapped void. go for it!

The problem with using wheels from Nissan's RWD will be offset. Period correct wheels for that would be like Enkei 83s, 92s, etc. You can also find the correct wheel covers for that thing on ebay.
That wire off the battery shouldn't be dealer installed AC. Both my B11 Sentra and my KN13 Pulsar NX have dealer installed AC and they don't have stand alone fused circuits like that. My guess would be a repair or other add-on.
The eight spark plug configuration was very interesting. The Nissan AntiPollution System idea was that multiple spark discharge would result in a more thorough burn of fuel. Of course in those days we didn't have reliable technology to have it done on the same spark plug, hence two plugs per cylinder. Of course now we have coil-on-plug to solve that, but very interesting solution at the time.

My Dad had one of these new - The Nissan Prarie in Australia - spooked by oil price rises in the 70's/80's - he moved from a 1974 Ford Falcon - 4.1 litre inline 6 cyl large sedan that was very much in a similar vein to big 6 cyl cars in the USA to this. Just looking it up, the Prarie only weighed 1000kg - for a 7 seater! In that era some of the small cars would twist if you jacked up a corner - crash structure safety was a bit lacking. The point about no B pillar was relevant - wouldn't be good in a side impact. It was based off the Nissan Pulsar. The 1.5 litre struggled a bit when you made the most of that passenger space.

Not 300Z wheels, I don't think they're the same bolt pattern and they're also for rear-wheel drive so the offset will be wrong and you'll wear your ball joints and wheel bearings out really fast. Any factory alloys that came of the US-market Stanza or Sentra models should fit your vehicle, though, and give you the correct suspension geometry. Inevitably the Stanza wagon/Prairie was a parts bin car so it used a lot of parts from the Sentra/Sunny and Stanza/Bluebird ranges of cars. I was thinking your engine sounded rather rough for one of those Datsun/Nissan single overhead cam engines, but I was forgetting that the US-market versions used a modified version of the 1.5/1.8 ohc unit (the standard Prairie engines in other markets) with, as you said, 8 spark plugs rather than 4 that you got in other markets. The first 4 were in the cylinders as normal, and the second four were on the exhaust side of the engine and would fire on the exhaust stroke, reburning the exhaust to use up any unburnt fuel and reduce emissions. They sound rougher as you hear the exhaust gases being burned in the exhaust manifold, much like if you had a car with seriously wrong ignition timing...

I don't mind the new car reviews if you give a model history and why the original was so much better! Manufacturers lose the essentialness of the original by the third or fourth iteration. That lean 80's car becomes a flabby pig! The original Civic was the size of the Fit. Today's Civic is now larger than the 80's Accord....

I was buying some stuff off of RockAuto and was thinking of your Stanza recently because of the parts fitting issues you were having. Just for the heck of it, I pulled up Nissan>1986, and noticed that there were entries for both the Stanza and Multi (what this was called in other countries). I'm curious how many mechanical differences there are between the sedan/5 door and the wagon, as this is one of the only wagons I can think of that isn't identical to the sedan from the rear doors forward. Maybe the shop ordered Stanza parts when in reality they should have ordered Multi parts? I don't know, but it may be worth looking in to. Hope this helps and doesn't just add another layer of confusion for you lol.

You give a thoughtful, thorough account of them, without the innate bias towards luxury brands (and against the "peasant" brands) that much of the automotive media seems to suffer from. After eliminating the odor source, run an ozone machine in it for about 35 minutes. It'll kill whatever odors that are lingering.

@@HelloRoad they made some incredible version of these in Japan. There was the Chariot Roadrunner (same as the Expo) which had an Evo-3 drivetrain. In a minivan! And there was the RVR Hyper Sports Gear (Expo LRV)

If you want to remove the smell, ozone the inside or deep clean it, but I think you should figure out where the smell is coming from first and fix it

The biggest thing I think that needs attention cosmetically is those bumpers. They need a nice spray of some black paint or something.

It's wild to me the RockAuto messed up thie order for this car. I have an equally scarce 1982 Plymouth Champ and a similar 1987 Sentra and of all the things I've fixed on the both, I've bought all my parts from RockAuto and never, EVER got wrong parts. Except when I ordered the wrong parts. 😅

    • @HelloRoad

Yeah this has happened a few times with a couple different cars. I think I may have gotten Stanza sedan parts. Stanza sedan and Stanza wagon are unrelated platforms even though they share a name. Pretty sure a bunch of parts are mislabeled in their system. The error has probably gone unnoticed for years, since pretty much nobody else is buying Stanza parts other than me 😆

What is the color of that 80's box beauty? I had a 1987 Nissan Sentra Wagon in Blue Mist Metallic. I loved it so much that I'm considering vynal wrapping my current wagon the same color! Love the mechanics perspective!

Oh nice!! Not sure of the exact color name, but it is a two tone. Very light blue up top and dark blue on the bottom section :)
