Pilot here. You really wouldn't find any fire-damaged components since the aircraft ran out of fuel. The 'white paint' you see on some of the aluminum parts is filiform corrosion from being exposed to the elements for so long. You usually would not find it on treated aluminum (Alodine). Alodine is an etchant used on clean aluminum and forms a protective coating. When dry it is either green or yellow.
The full version is much appreciated! I love getting a full perspective of such an epic recovery location! Super excited to see all of the items on display in the museum!
Just seeing what you guys are pulling from the ground is amazing. It is a grim reminder of what force that plane and passengers endured in the middle of a field. Thank you for saving history.
The unopened beer can could be one left at the sight after the crash was cleaned up and gone by a farmer that owns the adjoining land. ..He was there helping take out survivors. . He said it took him 25 years to return to that sight,, he went there on the anniversary of the crash around the same time of day the plane went down,, he took with him two things... two cans of Budweiser beer,,, he sat down,, remembered that day , drank one can of beer and left the other unopened beer there for Ronnie.... just found that out...
Barry, we saw that after we got back. Here is the thing... there is a stamp that the beer was from Florida. So unless he went to FLORIDA to buy his beer in the 1970s. It’s not that one. We have already been in touch with Budweiser to confirm. Be sure to watch the uncut for picture of the Florida stamp. We didn’t realize it either. Give me just a few and I will post it in our community section and on our Facebook page.
I worked crash sites in the early 80s. We had to survey and map each piece, and each piece had to be accounted for. I’m amazed at the amount of debris that was left behind.

This is amazing, has anyone thought about placing a marker on the site in honor of those who perished? Keep up the great work of preserving history. Enjoyed the video and as always Be Safe and HH my friends.
Jessie yes but the land owner is clearing the site. There was a marker placed a few miles away. Unfortunately those people have placed the marker but still taking “donations” for “upkeep” of marble markers. No word yet on exactly who is getting paid for the “up keep”.
11:59 : THAT IS A BACK SECTION TO AN INSTRUMENT PANEL. INSTRUMENTS USE SILVER WIRES AND BRASS SCREWS TO KEEP THEM FROM CAUSING MAGNETIC DISTURBANCES WHICH CAUSE THE INSTRUMENTS TO DISTORT THE TRUE READINGS OTHERWISE

At 27:23 the rectangular opaque pieces are mica, a flaky layered stone that is used as an insulator against heat (it's inside irons and toasters) and/or electricity. That assembly you dug up is probably some kind of switch or electrical device.
Congrats to all involved. Great hunt and videos. I liked this one better than the other version but it was harder to find time to watch. You must have done a lot of editing to shorten that other one. Great job.
It's good you guys are finding stuff. This is American and Rock n Roll history right here. It should be preserved for future generations to know about what happened that day. Kids today (save for a few) have no idea of who Lynyrd Skynyrd was. Shame.

The green is a zinc chromate primer. Used by nearly every aircraft manufacturer of the time. Usually, the first coat would be a yellow tint, the second darkened with black to make a green tint. This would be to indicate to the builders whether a part had been primed once or twice.
The thing that gets me is this flight was supposed to be the band’s last flight using that Convair 240. The following day, they were upgrading to a Learjet in Baton Rouge.
The band Aerosmith looked at this plane and decided it was a death trap and didn't buy it.Bad call on Skynyrd for flying in it even after the right engine was not running correctly.....and even caught fire the flight before. When many of the members were reluctant to get on the plane.....Ronnie said...….what the heck......when its your time …..its your time......so they all boarded anyway.Billy Powell said Ronnie didn't have a mark on him......but his head hit something hard like a tree I think.
looking at this stuff, it can be really hard to identify particular components, although context helps. be careful to diagram where things are found. from there you can expand your search. I do have quite a bit of experience on older aircraft, I was part of a group in Kansas city that flew and maintained a Lockheed super constellation as well as a Douglas DC-3 restoration, worked on several WW-2 aircraft, including the B-17 bomber that crashed a few weeks ago. that being said, every manufacturer has proprietary techniques and I have never worked on a Convair. one thing that will be consistent are the engines, I am guessing this airplane had Pratt&Whitney R-2800 double wasp engines, I am going to look it up after I write this so if you expand your search from the cockpit area to where the wings rested you might find engine components that are easily identifiable. like I said, feel free to give me a call and we can discuss this, there is a lot to get into on something like this

Brandon Mullins yes we saw that as well. What made this can different was the Florida tax stamp. Unless he drove to FL on a beer run. We confirmed with Bud that the can was the style produced in 1977. It was also buried under wreckage from the plane. Therefor we believe it is related to the band. Check our community section of this channel where we posted a picture some times back of the stamp.
All those really small bits and pieces? This means that the impact was horrendous! Convair builds excellent aircraft, some of the strongest made. I bet a major airline owned it for a good spell, long before this leasing company in Dallas acquired it. I hate to lay blame, but I put this one on Capt. Walter McCreary. If he had stuck with his 1st gut feeling, and not made that last turn, things would have been different because he wouldn't have had to clear trees so high. It would have also helped , had they 'stuck' the tanks in Greenville. Eugene Weaver
Sean, if you would like to see a map of the site, the best perspective is the NTSB report. You can find it by doing a google search. We were only there for a short period of time and detecting near the main fuselage. If you have further questions about this project, please post here or you can find us on Facebook at the History Seekers. Thank you for watching.
Indeed google. I meant a layout perhaps of where you found the trim ring, some of that wood and fabric, the fuse, ... were things in line with the glide path perhaps? Curious
We did not want to publish that with exact place each item was found to not give looters an exact spot. At least as it is now they will have to research and be on the property long enough to get caught this way. We recorded the info so that if the govt investigators would like to reopen the case they could. We doubt they would at this point.
@@HistorySeekers you may have. I could have missed that. Great video. I have thought many times that someone needed to go through that site with a metal detector.
The area where the piece of skin with the red paint or sticker work on appears to be pretty close to where the piece with all blue paint on was found so that is strongly suggestive that they are both pieces of cockpit skin...
Awe sum footage of the dig. I thoroughly enjoyed your taking us along. I had no idea that the crash was as close as it was from where I live/grew up. Thanks for sharing✌🏻️ btw why not show the "un-cut" version to begin with? 🤔 F5
We normally dont because people dont have that long to watch on youtube. In this instance there were so many questions about the stuff we said and did that we thought we would just put it all out to dispel any rumors.
Amazing only 6 people were killed with that amount of destruction from the impact. Very sad. I was a kid fan at the time and remember hearing the news.
I used to live in Orange Park where Ronnie is buried and had friends who lived in Doctor’s Cove where he lived at one time. This video is fascinating but also makes me very sad. Just a shame what happened. Always makes me shake my head about what could’ve been.
Did the property owners actually say that the land was going to be developed? I'm curious to know what they are going to do. I'm familiar with the area and that crash site is back in the woods in the middle of nowhere.
Thanks for watching. Not sure what we will do with it. It will be offered for display but since we can not say for sure it was from the plane they likely will not take it which is understandable.
Just imagine if it was a coin that was used in a card game, which usually pennies are not used in cards, BUT being where it was found and the date...just imagine who's hands that coin was in

Shawn, we spoke to a member of the Van Zant family about that and when a museum is built for the band; which may be coming we will get items down there. It is important to remember that not everyone that died that day lives there. We also spoke to someone who was contacting the museum near where Steven and Cassie Gaines were from.
@@HistorySeekers Agreed, but it is ground zero for the band. I thought all the original members were from here..I was just wondering...Thanks for the reply.
Shawn the family member said Johnny is looking at starting the museum there. We told them to have him contact us and we will be happy to put some in there.
@@HistorySeekers I think that would be awesome for the city..The roots run deep here for that band an legacy they left behind that is actually still being enjoyed by so many..An the location of hell house will soon be someone's back yard. I think they deserve more than a street name. Thinking that would be a cool place for a museum...I bet there's a lot of cool pics the family has from that place that the public has never seen. The lots still have not bin purchased.
The air plane remains were taken to B&O welding in Brookhaven, Mississippi where it stayed till around 1984ish and was sold for scrap . I was told sent to Birmingham. Alabama to be scraped .
And to think Ronnie's spirit is probably watching over you while you are on that site......since he died on impact....Cassie Gains bled to death from a massive throat woumd.Billy Powell held her in his arms while she passed.I think Artimus Pyle did too.
Interesting thoughts Edward. I wonder myself if people's spirits linger over where they died or if they stay close to their children and loved ones. I can't imagine anyone's spirit wanting to be in a lonely forest when it could watch over it's wife and kids and grandchildren. No one visits this accident scene. It's off limits to everyone. It's lonely and desolate.
I think Ronnie's spirit went with the plane since he died in there and got crushed when the plane was scraped. I bet Cassie's spirit flew into whomever was holding her when she died. It surely wasn't Pyle because he was busy getting shot while walking to get help. Get a grip. No wonder this guy wants to bulldoze this site.... I can't imagine what kinds of people come here.
When those beautiful people were condemned to Death in October 1977, they were not even aware if they were going to make it or not, They were between shows, Cassie Gains bought a Commercial ticket but was talked into flying this plane, the Mayham that would have unfolded on this Flight would have been something none of us could comprehend, and here you are digging it all up, there were Body parts, blood and lives lost here, please just leave it alone, I'd be so ashamed of what you have done, I'd tread carefully through the sacred place and leave everything as it was, just take in what happened.
Hey if y’all don’t mind I’m going to try and share this with Artimus , I have a bud who place bass for the Artimus Pyle band, think they would like to see this if they haven’t already.. Really appreciate y’all sharing your experience with us.. I have one of the original Street Survivors record before the record company changed the cover..
Scott. That would be great. Show him the other parts too. We have the edited section that has over 425k views and just went back there a month or so ago right before the virus hit. Would love to talk to him about it.
Those are from treasure hunters that must illegally trespassed to get them. We had permission but it was understood that we would never sell the items that we found.
This stuff wasn't missed by investigators. When the investigators got through with their investigations they took a dozer and dug a large hole and pushed all the small pieces in the hole and covered them up. This stuff is coming back to the surface after many years. Saw this on another documentary.
From pictures it looks like some was and they had part made almost into a living room looking area toward the front. There is a good video that was taken before the crash that shows the inside.
Dang cool video guys. Yes green or yellow is zinc cromate primer has very flat look. That big piece is definitely a trailing edge of a flight surface with rivet line. Peace Luke T

I loved that band I have a few albums
Best band of the era.
I love how rough bob is with the items he finds.
amazing!
Would trade some colonial detecting :D
That part that fell apart. Had the glass and some thin rectangular pieces. It is a fuse.
Thank you yes. I thought that I put the text in there. I may have forgotten.
@@HistorySeekers you may have. I could have missed that. Great video. I have thought many times that someone needed to go through that site with a metal detector.
i worked for a boeing subcontractor and the green paint is def primer
The area where the piece of skin with the red paint or sticker work on appears to be pretty close to where the piece with all blue paint on was found so that is strongly suggestive that they are both pieces of cockpit skin...
yes you are correct.
Awe sum footage of the dig. I thoroughly enjoyed your taking us along. I had no idea that the crash was as close as it was from where I live/grew up. Thanks for sharing✌🏻️ btw why not show the "un-cut" version to begin with? 🤔

Great video awesome finds there.
I didn't know that when a plane made of steel crashes a million tiny pieces get scattered all over.....very interesting video.
Most of it was high grade aircraft aluminum other than the frame.
Auto restorer here, I used zinc chromate primer by PPG and it was yellow/ green, recommended for aluminum

And please let us know where they are going to be displayed
I sure will as soon as we get the agreement signed. They are working through which pieces and how many they want for display.
I used to live in Orange Park where Ronnie is buried and had friends who lived in Doctor’s Cove where he lived at one time. This video is fascinating but also makes me very sad. Just a shame what happened. Always makes me shake my head about what could’ve been.
Yes it is very sad Greg. Thank you for watching.
Did the property owners actually say that the land was going to be developed? I'm curious to know what they are going to do. I'm familiar with the area and that crash site is back in the woods in the middle of nowhere.
There was talk about it but nothing in stone.
A good hunt to document this accident site.
Thank you Ron.
I grew up nearby. The main fuselage was taken to nearby Brookhaven, and eventually scrapped. I know people who saw it.
Thank you for sharing.
I would give anything for that penny!! Would treasure it forever!!
Thanks for watching. Not sure what we will do with it. It will be offered for display but since we can not say for sure it was from the plane they likely will not take it which is understandable.
@@HistorySeekers i think what y'all are doing is awesome
Just imagine if it was a coin that was used in a card game, which usually pennies are not used in cards, BUT being where it was found and the date...just imagine who's hands that coin was in
Wow awesome finds gentlemen an young lady. Carl HH
Thank you
People out there who thinks it took THEM a Little bit of a long time to get Bob Seger in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Man that Man is one of the best theirs EV we been through the year's I've seen a few times when they put the person in they're either Dead or something because look at Seger what is he now 72 are around that just saying a man done the Music and it takes 40yrs to get nominated for the rock and roll Hall of Fame folks that do this will kind of thing think maybe I could do it before they die are people that listen to them do ✌️🤬 just saying keep on rocking peace out?? 🐵 Quit monkeying around they deserve it 💤 sleeping on the job just wanted to add and the silver bullet band, ✌️🤪🎧
That large piece at 30:30 looked to have a serial # on it.
we thought so too but couldnt make out any numbers.
Is it going to be a museum in Jacksonville I wonder. I feel that it should all be brought home an displayed here.
"Seafoam green" He must be a guitar player.
I tried buck a severe lack of musical talent. Basically I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket with some help.
color of my bass - got a discount bc they couldn't sell the color but I always get compliments haha
What happened to what you found?
we still have it
Maybe see if the rock n roll hall of fame will take some pieces
We called them but they wouldn’t even let us talk to the curator. Now another museum is interested
History Seekers why would they not be interested in that? It’s a part of rock n roll history
Jason, I wondered the same thing. They wouldn't let us past the lady that answers the phone.
History Seekers did she say why they were not interested
Where did the rest of the plane go..whats left?
Unfortunately the scrapped it after the NTSB completed their investigation.
I posted the link to your first video to a huge Skynyrd fan site I`m a member of. I`ll post this one too.
Thanks
Enjoyed the cut version, but this is just as interesting. Meant to ask last this last time. How did you get the permission to hunt this site?
Our guide knew the land owner.
When those beautiful people were condemned to Death in October 1977, they were not even aware if they were going to make it or not,
They were between shows, Cassie Gains bought a Commercial ticket but was talked into flying this plane, the Mayham that would have unfolded on this Flight would have been something none of us could comprehend, and here you are digging it all up, there were Body parts, blood and lives lost here, please just leave it alone, I'd be so ashamed of what you have done, I'd tread carefully through the sacred place and leave everything as it was, just take in what happened.
What about the tree with the names carved in it, somebody might want to have that preserved 🙏
my understanding is that is not going to be removed. It is in our other video.
You fellas should see if you can get permission to detect where the Hellhouse was located . 😁
We would be up for it if the owners want us to do it.
27:27 looks to be maybe a fuse or something of that nature
It is a 225 amp fuse
Simply Amazing ! Great job ya'll...👍😎
Thank you so much!
21:26: CALLED AN ADELL CLAMP.
Thank you! We didnt know the technical name.

YOU ARE MOST WELCOME AND I SALUTE WHAT YOU ALL ARE DOING. WHERE ARE YOU GUYS LOCATED. I LIVE NOT FAR AWAY FROM MCCOMB,MISS
I see pieces of the plane on ebay that the land owner says are from the crash for sale ?
Those are from treasure hunters that must illegally trespassed to get them. We had permission but it was understood that we would never sell the items that we found.
This stuff wasn't missed by investigators. When the investigators got through with their investigations they took a dozer and dug a large hole and pushed all the small pieces in the hole and covered them up. This stuff is coming back to the surface after many years. Saw this on another documentary.
Wow! That plane was ripped into a zillion pieces.
Was there wood in the interior of the plane
From pictures it looks like some was and they had part made almost into a living room looking area toward the front. There is a good video that was taken before the crash that shows the inside.
Dang cool video guys. Yes green or yellow is zinc cromate primer has very flat look. That big piece is definitely a trailing edge of a flight surface with rivet line.
Peace Luke T
Thank you Luke!
Can you do the Buddy Holly plane crash area
I think that one has been checked pretty hard from what we have been told.
