    Sardines and cod liver are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, but is one better for you than the other? Find out in this quick video.
    0:00 Introduction: Sardines vs. cod liver
    0:23 Cod liver oil
    0:57 Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA
    1:10 Comparing sardines vs. cod liver
    3:50 Sardines and salmon
    4:05 Learn more about the benefits of cod liver oil!
    In this video, we’re going to talk about the health benefits of cod liver and sardines. Sardines are excellent for your health and a great source of omega-3s, but so is cod liver! You should consume both foods because they each have their own strengths.
    Cod liver and sardines contain omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA. EPA helps reduce inflammation, while DHA supports the brain, nerves, and heart.
    Sardines contain .9 to 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per serving while cod liver contains 9 to 11 grams per serving. Cod liver also contains significantly more vitamin D.
    Sardines and cod liver contain vitamin A in its active form, retinol. Vitamin A supports vision, vision at night, and the inner mucosal membranes of your mouth, throat, sinuses, and lungs. It’s also important for your thyroid. Sardines contain 32 mcg of vitamin A, and cod liver contains 5100 mcg!
    Cod liver does not surpass sardines in all aspects. Sardines are a better source of protein.
    Cod liver is a rich source of folate at 300 mcg, while sardines only contain 10 mcg. Sardines contain 392 mg of calcium and 545 mg of phosphorus and cod liver contains 10 mg and 100 mg respectively.
    Cod liver and sardines contain about the same amount of B12 at 10.6 mcg and 11 mcg respectively.
    When comparing sardines to salmon, both fish contain B vitamins, but sardines are a better source of calcium, phosphorus, selenium, iron, magnesium, and zinc.

    I like cod liver and a great recipe is: boil eggs as many as you want, a bit hard so that the yolk is firm. Cut the eggs in halves and take out the yolks. Mix the yolks with cod liver (one can to maybe four yolks) and use the spices you like. Put the yolk/cod liver mix into the egg halves where the yolks have been. Use any topping you like, or no topping.
    Hope you understand this 😁 Greetings from Sweden 💖

      I heard that sardines are healthier packed in water instead of olive oil as the olive oil can't be trusted to be extra virgin, cold pressed and 100% olive oil and not a blend. If you can verify from the brand that it's at least 100% olive oil and not a blend then I would consume it. If not, I wouldn't.

    Several years ago, I ate 2 cans of cod liver per week. I stopped taking Vitamin D supplements. To my surprise, after about a year of this, my Vitamin D levels were very close to the lower bound of normal. I was close to being deficient!...
    In any case, it was still very tasty (it feels like it is melting in your mouth), so I am not complaining.

      Is it ok to have canned food so frequently? Seems some food is only available in can and I hesitate because of that. Otherwise i will try as well. Just curious.

    • @curiouscat3384
      @curiouscat3384 5 месяцев назад +2

      I wonder if 2 cans a week was enough to replace daily Vitamin D supplements which has a short shelf life. I take 10,000 ius of D3 with K2 (Dr. Berg brand). Cod liver comes nowhere near that so you'd need to make sure to get lots of D3 from other sources.

    • @billbauer9795
      @billbauer9795 5 месяцев назад

      I have also been a little concerned about the cod liver being canned.
      As for "Cod liver comes nowhere near that", I believe you are wrong. According to Chat GPT, "a rough estimate is that there are approximately 1000 IU of vitamin D3 in 1 teaspoon (about 5 ml) of cod liver oil.", and there are 120 ml per can, so about 24000 IU of vitamin D3 per can.

    The cod liver I buy comes "in it's own oil", according to the labelling on the can. But is that oil *really* the same oil - or same quality of oil - as the oil in the cod liver? Is it OK to eat that oil as well as the cod liver itself?

    A tin of Cod Liver in fat/ oil that cooked out has just under the RDA of Vitamin D if you eat the entire tin.

    A 15 ounce can of Salmon has 300% of the RDA of vitamin D.
