I think of all the TotalBoat products I really wouldn't want to do without, TotalFair is on my very short list of favorite products. It's been a real time saver with great results.
Not to be goofy but I find myself rooting for you when you try these experiments. Your attitude, patience, and attention to detail make these videos that much better to watch. Cheers.
5:49(ish) Andy starts talking about closing some gaps on his storage lockers. That really caught my attention because I have exactly the same project coming up on my own beloved Triton so THANKS ANDY!
Can't tell you how much I have learned watching your videos. They've helped greatly in my restoration project. Thank you for the information you provided us with.
You may think I'm crazy for commenting on this, but what the heck! I Love this instrumental song. I noticed you played it last week too! Love it! I watch all your video's, I'm hooked! Thank you for your instructions.
Andy you are an absolute perfectionist. I love it and love your work. I have learned so much just watching you do your magic. I hope you show this boat in a video when you get it launched on it's maiden voyage. Mark Dahl 🛥️
Sanding, glorious sanding...and I really want to say Mads did something similar to what you did there with the tape and faring compound...worked a treat for him too if memory serves.
as i sit and watch this, the smell of curing gelcoat wafts in from outside.... i channeled my inner Andy yesterday and made a nice hatch and lid for my own boat. i wish it was as easy for me as it seems to be for you - you're a master!
As others have said, thank you for videos like these! I'm in the middle of restoring a bass boat. First time working with fiberglass. Was going to have aluminum lids made, for some storage areas I'm adding. Now you have me thinking about making lids, and making a recessed tray for a trolling motor pedal.
Got a few boat projects ready to go myself as soon as property taxes are out of the way and the weather improves. You are a wealth of knowledge and I will be making use of some of it. Many thanks.
I’ve used this squeeze technique many times. It works very well. In fact, if you need to make a effect fit template for anything, a squeeze template made with 1/8” Masonite and bonds works wonders! Happy sanding!
Man, your attention to details amazing. I know exactly what you mean about those small gaps around the locker doors. When I know something like that is there, my eye goes to it immediately every time I look.
If you adapted another hose on your vacuum and attached the hose to the table, you could use it for suction pressure on the pieces you are working on down to the table while losing very little vacuum pressure until you break suction removing the piece... would be good as a location to sweep debris on table in to.. a valve adapter to turn each one on or off independently..
Me and my wife just acquired a 19 78 Stardust a big 60-foot we're doing a full-on restoration replacing the roof all the walls the metal sheeting on outside or in pretty good shape but I don't know if I should replace it with a better material but looking forward to learning more from you always loved boats but never restored one this big
A piece of glass works great for mixing 2 part fillers, razor blade for easy cleanup and contaminate free reusable surface. I use a shelf out of a old fridge.
A quick tip that might work how custom car builders get perfect door gaps they take a paint stick with 2 razor blades on it and spread some filler then pull the paint stick with razors on it and it cuts a perfect 4mm gap all the way around
I have to do this with a few hatches later this week. I was thinking of doing the packaging tape trick but using a waxed gelcoat thickened to a putty instead of bondo/fairing compound.
Hi Andy. Nice work but I could use your thoughts. I have a round bottom sailboat with a transom stern. I'm planning on re-enforcing the area around the outboard motor bracket. I bought a 1/2" x 12" x 24" corrosion resistant aluminum plate. Was planning to use Thixo to cement it in place. But then I saw you using Coosa Board. I'm wondering if that would be the better choice? Carl
Absolutly love your'e videos Andy! It always make me wanna start up with one of my boat projects. (Did finnish two boats last summer). I have three right now that needs a lot off work. The smalest is 6.5 meters. (21,5 feet). And the largest is 24 feet. Every time you post a new video i tell my girlfriend that im gona spend som time with "my boat friend Andy". Then I pour one big glass with gin and soda and go to my man cave and watch youre video at youtube. Thank you for great videos and a lot of help! Cheers!
Hey Andy, What is the flush trim router bit you're using to trim excess fiberglass from the panel edges? I tried a spiral carbide bit which I thought would work but no good. What do you suggest?
Andy, Really enjoy the content you provide. I followed the link on your site to purchase a 33" Flexisander but can't seem to find where I can buy sandpaper for it? 4 3/4" X 33" hook & loop. Where would you suggest I look? Thanks Bob Cronin
I'm not overly concerned about it as I'm intending to use this as a wet locker / cooler for drinks and such. But if I wanted could trim off around the lid with some thin flat stainless that would cover the seam and keep most water out :-)
Please slow down sometimes on the actual work its starting to feel like diy shows of heres what im going to do then here it is im sure theres more than me likes to see the real time work
Hi Robert! It's made by Flexisander :-) Currently their electric version uses a european plug and is 220V so I have to run it off a converter, but it works really well. it is not cheap, so unless someone is doing a lot of sanding it may be difficult to justify :-/
Aluminium tape works better if you use a gelcoat bog mix. It doesn't stick to it. Only thing I would suggest is to put a drop sheet in. I was cringing thinking you dropped oooze on what you had already faired underneither
Most paints will provide the data telling you what kind of SqFt coverage you can expect depending on how it's being applied (sprayed versus rolled / tipped). Info should be provided for both primer and paints :-)
I'm being cautious about my comment so there's no spoilers for whether this worked or not... :D I feel like you could do a whole episode on what fairing compound/epoxy/gelcoat will and won't stick to when setting something up with a temporary mold to minimize sanding and overall get a more beautiful result. It's all a bit of a mystery to me still.
We use melamine coated composite wood like the type you use for shelving. Mylar, packing tape, aluminum foil are a few others that work well. Always work better with mold release wax. What I've tried that doesn't work well are cellophane, wax paper, polyethylene rolls.

Nice job, never thought of the clear tape trick. That will go in the 'tool box'.

We use clear packing tape all the time to secure mylar on molds. Releases easily all the time.

So good, calms me down watching these vids! Thanks for making them!
I love it when you experiment and have success! This project is truly enjoyable to watch and I always look forward to the next episode! Thanks!
Total Fair is such a great product, I almost enjoy sanding.
Andy l just love it when a plan comes together.
👍👍👍
I’m so intrigued of how you’ll build the covers, awesome job
Funny you did that with the tape because I’ve been doing that for years for filling gaps or in different small releases lol
you have some of the best tools!!!!! Goodonyas
your work is impeccable.
How do you make the lids watertight so the boxes don´t get waterfilled?
Andy a wire chase for sure besides wires you need steering and throttle controls
You could do that gap just the right width all the way using some cardboard or maybe thin veneer strips between the part and the tape?
Or several layers of tape.

Like that detail work, we need luxury of time, thanks for the information great ideas and skills looking forward to applying some to my work. Have fun

A sheet of Melamine coated plywood works good too.
I use IKEA glass shelves double thick
Andy, we are professional sanders! Everything else is just “filler” lol!😂

Nice work!
Really helps to have great tools.
Pretty slick.

"Gorilla" packing tape is a little thicker if you need layer a edge seem like that to a desired seam thickness, pretty work
The first two minutes remind me that out of peanut butter.
Thanks!
Are the lids remaining hingeless? Would like to see hardware if not. 👍Supreme work!
Could you do a video making a large mould or medium mould for example a 10 ft boat or something?
At 12:44 , was that a drum sander bit in a router? Never seen that before.
Absolutly love your'e videos Andy! It always make me wanna start up with one of my boat projects. (Did finnish two boats last summer). I have three right now that needs a lot off work. PS: Sorry for my bad english... I'm Norwegian-
Haha, that's awesome thank you :-)!!
Wondering if you are going to gutter and drain these hatches for dry storage? Take care. Doug
Hi from Italy... But for the rain? Where he go?
How will these lids be attached to the deck. I'm assuming these lids will be stepped on.
Hey Andy, What is the flush trim router bit you're using to trim excess fiberglass from the panel edges? I tried a spiral carbide bit which I thought would work but no good. What do you suggest?
Andy, strengthwise how does Fairing compound compare to bondo type body filler?
Would Total Fair (fare?) work for auto body? Love the music by the way.
what's happened to the lighting this week? not as bright as usual, but great content, thanks
Try using teflon tape next time. We use in aircraft industry for things like that.

Look for Mirka Abranet by the roll. I have some in my Amazon store :-) www.amazon.com/shop/boatworkstoday?listId=3BDCWFNVIGAFF
Experience gained is never lost :o)
How do you plan to stop water from getting into the storage lockers through the gap at the edge of the lid ?
I'm not overly concerned about it as I'm intending to use this as a wet locker / cooler for drinks and such. But if I wanted could trim off around the lid with some thin flat stainless that would cover the seam and keep most water out :-)

My question too. Too busy to follow forever but I also suspect the butt joints in his panel design will fail in service
Why are you fairing the coosa??? And is that gel coat on the coosa before you did the fairing and why???
Boogerenas is that an industry turn 🤣😂🤣😂
I loved how you put a sander tool on your Festool OF ... and what is that land board electric tool you used?
Hi Robert! It's made by Flexisander :-) Currently their electric version uses a european plug and is 220V so I have to run it off a converter, but it works really well. it is not cheap, so unless someone is doing a lot of sanding it may be difficult to justify :-/
@@boatworkstoday Thank you. How about the sander "router bit" you attached to your Festool router?
@@boatworkstoday I'm a woodworker and as you know a great finish is a result of a lot of sanding :)
Aluminium tape works better if you use a gelcoat bog mix. It doesn't stick to it. Only thing I would suggest is to put a drop sheet in. I was cringing thinking you dropped oooze on what you had already faired underneither
There is a drop cloth in each locker :-)
When you cover those gunnels are you going to stick a chase in for any wire additions later?
I'm going to have the panels removable for easy access and service, but yes I will have runs for electrical and hydraulic lines :-)
Couldn't you just cover with gelcoat and sand that ? is fairing compound cheaper?
How many videos do you have w the same title, lol? Great vids!
And if it doesn't work, we'll never see the footage 😂😂👍
Hey, do you have this boat sold already??
No I don't. Leaning towards offering it for sale in the Fall but have not decided yet :-)
I have a 89 21' wellcraft cuddy I'm wanting to repaint. How do I figure out how much paint I need to paint the boat?
Most paints will provide the data telling you what kind of SqFt coverage you can expect depending on how it's being applied (sprayed versus rolled / tipped). Info should be provided for both primer and paints :-)
@@boatworkstoday alexseal is what I'm going to try
@@boatworkstoday it will be rolled Nd tipped
I started yelling tape them and pack filler in the second you pointed the seam out... I'm glad you listen to me... Hahaha.. great job Andy !
lol ;-)!

Why don't you use peel ply instead of sanding. Much easier and better
Wow nice videos. I am making a little boat It is no perfect but it is a learning experience
Have fun with it :-) Good luck!
OCD doesn't even begin to describe your personality.....lol. If you ever get rid of that boat, I want it.
