I did that with an aquarium pump too, and I never saw your video before hand ... a lot of the pieces that come out are just from the threads when you insert a fitting into them for the first time
When I saw this in your first build video I didn’t quite know how you did it, but I thought that it was BRILLIANT. So much better than filling shaking and pouring. Thanks for sharing your technique with us. I’ll definitely be doing this the next time I have to flush a rad. One question though. What size tubing did you use?
This is super late reply lol. So sorry and you probably already got it done. But the tubes actually came with the pump when I got it. I heard from a few people that the tubes don't come with it any more. But the fittings were 12mm so you can use tubing for that size and it should work. P.S. Also there is an fitting that goes into the outlet of the pump. You can remove the plastic fitting from the pump and insert the tube into the pump without it if you need a larger diameter.
This is legit a brilliant way to flush a rad. I've been filling and shaking this new radiator I bought for like 2 hours at this point and it's still not clean... Time to go buy a cheap aquarium pump, haha.
One would think the manufacturers would put some pride into not having gunk in their products, but instead we have to play around with filters and aquarium pumps on new products.
Cool video. I've seen this technique before but using a filter material and it all seemed like a pain to setup. Your setup is super clean, I appreciate the links, I ordered the exact same stuff! And I'm with you, I do the soak, shake, rinse, repeat, this is much easier! Thanks again!
I saw that you mentioned that in some comments but kept the big glass container. I used the suction cups to hold down the pump, then put the filter on top so the top of the filter is out of the water. A lot of the particles float, I've already got stuff in there and it has been running a couple hours. This is after a Mayhems Blitz treatment shaking method. One thing is the Alphacool rads have painted threads, I think what I'm getting out is some of those paint fragments. I know that those would have ended up in my CPU block for sure!
Actually I was always a console gamer first! When I was little I played on the old school playstations. My first watercooled PC build was just recently believe it or not!
My question is how did you know what tube diameter to buy.. all these cheap aquarium pumps on Amazon don't list inlet diameter.. I know the fittings I got.. but Im not buying a piece of soft tube to match my fitting OD that won't fit on the pump.
Sure, Here is are the exact items I used. However you can simply use the same idea and use different things. Even a normal coffee filter would work in theory. Aquarium pump I used: amzn.to/3tMiKbI Coffee filter amzn.to/3tKBAAd Exact in the video Jar (you'll need to cut a hole in the filter with this one) amzn.to/3KxTkVu Wide mouth jar (if you just want to put the tube on the side and not drill a hole) amzn.to/33xJWAx *Note: You don't have to buy or use a jar you can also just cut the top off of the distilled water bottle* In my PC build video I used the wide mouth jar and put the tube outside and ran it out of the mouth. Again you really don't need the ones but these give you an idea and you can duplicate it exactly if you like. You also need soft tubing and the fittings (plus distilled water) but those are less specific and people and use what they like. NOTE- If you have trouble making the tube fit into the pump, you can take out the insert that goes in the pump outlet. This makes the diameter larger and you can fit the tube in. (or get a smaller tube).
@@SnaxanGaming what size tubes and fittings? did you use the fittings you already had from the build? That build was hard tube right? Do the hard tube fittings work for this?

Actually a 360 radiator would have the same amount, not more. This is because the only difference is core tube length so there is exactly the same amount of welding on a 360 as on a 240 rad. Thanks for the intro to this flushing method.
End tank of the second radiator would catch and hold debris off the first rad, the third would catch and hold debris from the second and so on. You really have to flush the rads individually.
This is cool and extremely thorough, but don't feel like it it completely necessary. I have been watercooling for nearly 15 years and have never done anything like this. I just fill the rad up with about 50/50 water vinegar, throw on some caps, and shake it. I then let it sit with the fittings on the bottom for about 15 minutes. Then drain it without letting it get shaken up. The debris will settle to the bottom so it comes out easily. I then rinse with regular tap water about 5 times and finish with 2 rinses of distilled water. The whole process takes about 30 minutes and you don't have to buy anything extra to do it. I have built/upgraded many systems over the years and never had 1 single problem with debris. The biggest issue you will come across when watercooling is caused by colored fluid, especially anything opaque. I swear by distilled water and Primochill Liquid Utopia additive. I actually let my system run for 4 full years without a single flush. When I did get around to doing some upgrades and flushing it out everything still looked perfect. The only things that wasn't completely was the reservoir. It was cloudy above the waterline because I let it run so long that water had evaporated. I feel like people are beginning to think the barrier of entry to watercooling is too high. With hardline tubing, distroplates, and $400 GPU blocks becoming the norm it looks too expensive and too difficult for new people. That type of stuff is not necessary. A soft tubing build performs just as well, is way easier to maintain, cheaper, and can still look great. I did one hardline build and even though it looked great I will never do it again. I am happy to see watercooling become more popular, but not happy with the expectations that are being set. I built my entire first loop on an I7 920 for about half the price of what just a GPU block cost now days.
Hey Sarah thank you so much for this video! I'm planning a watercooling build and took a lot of inspirations from you! I was wondering what was your method of emptying the distilled water from the radiator after you have finished with the flushing.
So happy to hear that thank you! You can just take out the tube and fittings and pour the water out, nothing special. That’s why I prefer not using any other mixes with the water (some people use white vinegar or other things). If just distilled water is left behind, it’s harmless.
I was able to clean my GTS 360 and SR2 360 with a 1/3 white vinegar 2/3 distilled water mix, flushing about 5 times each and then letting both rads sit completely filled with boiling hot water straight from the kettle, draining after it cooled a little to get the solution out. Those little flakes showing up in the filter? Yeah you don't want those getting into the microfins of your waterblocks. While it won't damage the blocks per se, any buildup of debris inbetween those little microfins can eventually compromise your blocks cooling performance. And you definitely don't want any of it finding it's way through your loop and into the D5 pump!
Hi Sarah! Going to build my first custom loop next week just waiting for the parts from EKWB. What about the cpu block and reservoir? Does it need flushing like that or no need na? Thanks!
They can just be rinsed out with distilled water since they are smaller and more visible inside. Once the loops is set up, it's a good idea to run it for a while, double check for leaks, and then drain/flush it a final time with distilled water before filling it up with the coolant. If you do that, any of the stuff that was in the block should be out. good luck on your build!
What size soft tube did you use? OD 12mm, would be great to know the specific tubing that would fit that pump because I don't think a 16mm OD can fit in there.
Okay so help me out if you can. I've searched high and low on Amazon, and I can only find aquarium pumps that take either 8mm or 13mm tubes. I can only find compression fittings in 10mm or 12mm and soft tube in 10mm. So how did you get a soft tube to connect to the pump and fit in the fittings?
@@FallenAngels97 try it for a couple hours. then clear the filter. then run it for another 10 minutes or so to make sure it's clear. There's no magic number since all rads are different, just repeat do it long enough until nothing is clear. The tubing actually came with the pump I bought int he description. Idon't know if it still comes with tubing, but if not, the fittings I used were 12mm so you can get that size and it should work. (I think the tube was 1/2 inch which is technically a tad smaller but still fits)

You should flush everything, rad, gpu/cpu blocks everything. Ive done it 2 years ago and sometimes still find flakes coming off the connectors since they're plated nickel.
I would further use a inline filter with a finer mesh and catch even more gunk, especially with alpha cool radiators, the stuff that i found in the filter was unreal.
@@novusparadium9430All water cooling radiators have some soldering residue inside. It's unfortunate but proper rinsing would be too expensive for the manufacturers. My radiators (not Alphacool) took ten hours each to get clean with high-flow electric pump action.
Thanks for showing how much shrapnel there was at the end. I only rinsed mine 3 times but got a similar amount out. I did use near boiling distilled water with a bit of vinegar for the first flush, though. The HWlabs radiators have relatively more shrapnel than EK or Alphacool, and the Corsair radiators are rebranded HWlabs so those really need to be flushed too.
You're wasting money by boiling distilled water. You're going to get crap in there regardless because of the process of boiling the water. Boil regular water, flush it, then finish it off with distilled water flush
@@rustler08 I have thought of that, contaminants from the pans getting in during the boiling process, but it should be less minerals boiling and being added than straight tap. I do a final flush with straight distilled, just as you said. I even run it a few days with distilled, then coolant, flush that and then do a final fill. So wasted $$ all around.
7:00 Doing it the other way (shaking) may be more work but it's going to do a better job of cleaning out your rad. This lazy way will ensure that there will still be heavier pieces inside...trapped and unable to join their family. ;)
You do realise you can do both right? At the same time. Me personally do hot water with vinegar and shake vigorously. Empty that, then rinse with distilled and then hook this up. Reversing inlet and outlet after about 4 hours.
@@EclecticianG do you mean what strength vinegar or what ratio vinegar to water? Because it's double strength vinegar (cleaning vinegar) mixed 5:1 with hot water. Doing this step first with the shaking will loosen any stubborn debris. Rinsing with distilled or distilled+ baking soda will balance the pH again and then running this style of loop forces any smaller debris out with the constant flow. The total process leaves a rad very clean.
@@justinpape5718 It's because there's not enough head pressure to get everything out, you need more pressure in a closed system to adequately get all of the gunk out, especially the smaller bits. So you really need to shake it or use the preflush
After spending almost $1K on watercooling supplies, you would think I wouldn't need to do all this prep work, and possibly destroy a pricey stainless steel coffee filter as well:(

There's no magic number since all rads are different, just repeat do it long enough until nothing is clear. It's also best to reverse the pump flow once you do a cycle (swith the tubes) for good measure
Love you Sarah you rock
do you also post-flush your radiators?
But where's the flux capacitor?
I dig Sarah'sTechTips. Not just a TV star, but a techie too. What a unicorn. xD
Lol we need to figure out how to generate enough gigawatts first
Hey will you also flush your waterblocks doing this same method or simply no need?
No need to do it this extensively for the blocks. You can get away with filing with water and shaking. That's just me though.
@@SnaxanGaming thanks. My case mb ram and cpu showed up. Looking forward to getting going. I’m also building with the msi carbon ek x btw
Thanks for the video! What's the ID/OD for the tubing you used?
The tubing actually came with the pump I bought int he description. Idon't know if it still comes with tubing, but if not, the fittings I used were 12mm so you can get that size and it should work. (I think the tube was 1/2 inch which is technically a tad smaller but still fits)
@@SnaxanGaming Awesome! I have 10/16mm ZMT tubing coming so we'll see if it works. Thanks for the info👍
Love from America 🇺🇲🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇲 keep going on we will support you and love your videos
Would it be bad to loop 3 rads together and flush them all at the same time , and use a strong water pump?
should be fine :)
@@SnaxanGaming ohh wow. Ok . I got a thread ripper 24 core, rtx 3090 , 3 rad liquid cooled pc ill be building within a few more weeks. I hope I can get it built in 1 day after full radiator flushing. All for 3d modeling, VR, VFX video compositing stuff that I'm getting into. Thanks for the help. :)
@@MarcusJ973Quite a rig you got! Should serve you well and will last a while. Good luck on the build!
@@SnaxanGaming :) :)

Pro Tec Radiator Flush and Conditioner for after against corrosion.
So cute❤
You should flush everything, rad, gpu/cpu blocks everything. Ive done it 2 years ago and sometimes still find flakes coming off the connectors since they're plated nickel.
I would further use a inline filter with a finer mesh and catch even more gunk, especially with alpha cool radiators, the stuff that i found in the filter was unreal.
Did you find a suitable inline filter somewhere?
Almost sounds like alpha cool radiators are "Defective" if your finding alot in them.
It's funny, well not really funny, but they all market their radiators and "pre-cleaned" and "no need to flush" but there is always stuff in there!
Ohhhhhhh! I have a small cat water fountain in the garage they never liked and the pump is purfect for this lol 😅
Nice
This is helpful
miro tus vídeos y no entiendo nada jajajaj saludos desde argentina♡
This girl 😍🥰
Gosh sarah your incredible person perfecto is right your amazing best person ever saw best so boss that mad scientist 🤣
I wouldn't be able to resist shaking the rad while the water is pumping through it lol
That same cheap pump is used in cat fountains, do not recommend, absolutely shit. Seeing it used in this video, for way cheaper, is awesome.
Thanks, i have 2 480mm x60 radiators .... 😅😅
@@prototypep4 Sure, but why? Get the metal out, then use the vinegar and rinse with distilled water. What concentration of vinegar do you use?
@@EclecticianG do you mean what strength vinegar or what ratio vinegar to water? Because it's double strength vinegar (cleaning vinegar) mixed 5:1 with hot water. Doing this step first with the shaking will loosen any stubborn debris. Rinsing with distilled or distilled+ baking soda will balance the pH again and then running this style of loop forces any smaller debris out with the constant flow. The total process leaves a rad very clean.
You could do this with tap water and drain it into sink - eliminates need for buying a pump, jar, filter..
Sure but it will take you dozens of times and a lot more grief until the rads are clear. Takes forever. Been there done that.
@@James-xp7dy no as in you leave the tap on with tubing and walk away. I fail to see how that is any different from this method?
@@justinpape5718 It's because there's not enough head pressure to get everything out, you need more pressure in a closed system to adequately get all of the gunk out, especially the smaller bits. So you really need to shake it or use the preflush
Los Pollos!!!
Anyone else thought that was a *big stain* on Sarah's shirt at first lol
Sound off.....nice vid.....see you in the next one

cool
Hi
After spending almost $1K on watercooling supplies, you would think I wouldn't need to do all this prep work, and possibly destroy a pricey stainless steel coffee filter as well:(
Fancy
Dang you fine fine lol jk I love your channel bye
Hey Sarah, Bam! Sneak attack, the timing was impeccable, especially when you’re involved, you know I still think unravel was better, I’ll be waiting for your (the name of episode 42 of attack on titan). Always prolly. Uhhhh this is an edit, “I eat my own poo”
I have it all edited and uploaded! Just need to publish it :) I'm trying to figure out the best day to do release the anime reactions videos. I'd like to do it the same time and day each week. I also know that most of the people on the channel are gamers but the best is when they are anime watching gamers who build PCs.
