Hey internet! Today we're here to try and recreate a snare drum using pure synthesis and a few tricks to make unique snare sounds! This was a fun project of mine for creating new samples quickly, and I'm pretty pleased with the results!
Stay classy!

The best snare video. Not another 808 sounding snare
Glad it was helpful!
That was impressive. From thos original fm sounds, I never thought you'd get that snare sound. Insane! Cheers dude, this was an eye opener.
Synthesis is magical stuff!
Thanks for this even 4 years after you did this tutorial I think it’s the best way to make a synthetic snare as you have that control that you don’t get in serum. What I like is the fact you can find a real snare you like from a old break and bring it up to date 👍👍
THIS was the snare synthesis tutorial I was looking for! Awesome video man. I was really struggling to add unique timbral qualities to my synthesised snares but this method just opened up so many new options for me.
For sure! There's definitely that extra 'sauce' to the process that can really make some unique snares. Happy synthesizing!
Dude I watch this video multiple times a week it is straight up galaxy brain so much better than every other pitch dropped white noise burst snare keep it up dude
I'm glad someone else understands the frustration of fm8. It is always doing something that i cannot find in the settings. Thanks for your knowledge!
SeamlessR is fantastic. It took me a long time for sound design to click, but one day I knew I was actually able to understand sound design when I was able to keep up with his videos
Super explanation, and teached a thing about FM8, still one of the best soft FM synth.
Can't wait to be creative with the Process. Very intuitive tutorial, thank you.
Happy sound making!
Nice and instructive video! For me this is close to physical modeling, spectral wise. The snare might become even more realistic if you set a velocity envelope to the different volume faders you have, to control the levels of harmonics and noise. I believe FM8 allows you to do so. Then if you are nerdy enough to get even more close to a real snaredrum you could get a different sound when you hit it towards the rim. That would translate in less noise and higher harmonics I think and you could set this over the keyboard or midi map. One basic note that would correspond to a full hit and when using higher notes you would go towards the rim. And then (and I am getting annoying here) the next challenge would be to make a crash cymbal with these same controllers so you can get a full crash sound to a cup hit that sounds like a bell or ride cymbal : )
Sorry for being long, I enjoyed the video and I will surely watch some other videos you made.
So how would you go about setting the velocity envelope to the volume faders thanks
@@Selous_Scout sorry I haven't used this since the last years...
not related but you have a perfect podcast voice, id listen to audiobooks by you
Woooow, a snare outside 909 and 808 snare
Solid! Thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍
Wow. I thought I was really diving deep when I used a Model D with a couple of envelope shapers to make my snare. This is nuts. What a video.
Haha I know that feeling. There's always more stuff to learn and new approaches to take when it comes to sound design. It's all about being creative, and just pushing yourself to go further with the idea! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for the tutorial, I was having trouble making snares on my volca drum but now I get it :D
Daaaaaaamn that was super-informative!!!!
While it is fascinating to watch how you create a snare from scratch, I'm very afraid that there is so much hidden knowledge applied by you that it would be virtually impossible to do this as a beginner. Good thing you also make sample packs :)
This is great. I look forward to coming back to this for reference in the future. Thank you!
I was like, “dude, there’s no way this is gonna sound good” until you added the distortion and EQ and I then I was like 😲
just mentioning Voxengo's Curve EQ is a spline equalizer, the free analyzer is Voxengo Span. be well all, and thank you for the tut! :)
That snare sounds really nice
You look like the singer from powerman5000 in this! No disrespect, Thank you for all your hard work! 😅
impressive stuff man, great tutorial :)
Glad you liked it!
Awesome, thanks!
Wow!
What a great video! Where did you learn this tho?
best FM synth = Halion 7 !
Bravo !
That was great ;)
20:00 I'd say that it would be contradictory to set a fixed frequency and at the same time engage a pitch envelope (inherently not fixed). As a thought.
There are basically three parts to a drum. The top head bends, so the pitch bends. The bottom head is usually ignored... The snare strap and shell tone reflect that pitch (pre)bend, even though they don't have a bend; frequencies rise and fall accordingly.
Oh yeah like that daddy... I mean: first
lol
omg, he looks so tall
Can anyone help with the reverb settings for a logic user please thanks
I
SNVRES VRE CVLT
SNɅRES!
I can't find any videos about how to make a chunky trap snare
00:00 Big Voice!!! Uau!!!!
In a world....
set up the envelope attack for all operators slightly later than the operator envelope that replicates the stick hitting the snare. you'll be surprised the difference this makes
Do you mean after the transient or the fundamental thanks and where is a good place to start when off setting the attack envelope
Suomisaundi ending song 👌
It sounds like real snare
Zoom recorder, a flip flop and hit your bathroom tiles with it varying the strength of the hit, you get insta snares...
Opening a can of soda in a bathroom is also a great snare sound!
Good tutorial and……where is the dog on the cover😂
Glad you liked it! And she was probably sleeping under my desk or in one of her beds haha.
i like the one you made better
For some reason, the presenter sounds very much like my iPhone SIRI reading.
Reason has all of this done for you with it's drum machine.
It does! I use the Kong machine quite a bit. But, it's still cool to learn about some of the theory behind it!
I consider FL studio's Sytrus a better FM sound designing tool than FM8. Sytrus is really flexible.
For sure, Sytrus is probably one of the most powerful FM synths out there besides I guess PhasePlant. I've always been a bit jealous of FL's instrument library!
whys sytrus so good?
oh my goodness. he used to look like a skinny guy fieri
Serum is easier in making snares...
Decent drum synth vids come out, but just before everything is AI... Which makes all our work meaningless. 🙆
Then it was meaningless since sample packs became popular. This is just for fun and curiosity.
Sure, i also used that AI excuse to lay back , and wait for the perfect music it will spit out , but then i realized - i make this for fun, and i dont let that be taken from me. If AI does their thing - i still do mine.
