  • This is NOT a sponsored video. In this video, I discuss what I've learned about while practicing with a BOSS looping pedal. I'm not sure if these kinds of videos will be helpful, so this is kind of an experiment. I'm new to the whole "product review" kind of thing, but I wanted to be honest about what I thought with it. Electronic music equipment can be VERY expensive, and it's hard to find honest reviews about what people actually think of the products, so hopefully this will help those who are curious about what it's like with a violin. ^_^
I'm new to the world of pedals, and I've got a lot left to learn!
Discussion of the pedal begins at the beginning of the video
    Demonstration begins at 10:27
    Final thoughts begin at 17:10
Other equipment used discussion begins at 19:50
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =)
    ~ Katy

Loop Pedal: BOSS RC-3 Loop Station (www.boss.info/us/products/rc-3/)
Pickup: Baggs Violin Bridge Pickup (www.lrbaggs.com/pickups/violi...)

I have been playing for 6 months, so am new to the violin. You did such a beautiful job playing with your looper. I would enjoy using one too since I usually play alone, except for an occasional duet with my teacher during class. Could you tell me which songs sound the best played with "rounds".? What was the name if the music pieces you played?

Great video! It's refreshing that you explained quite clearly how to use the pedal functions rather than like many of the other videos that act as a platform for players to show boat. I enjoyed the whole video. You're a superb musician and come across fun! :)

Very cool. I'm surprised someone, or manufacturer hasn't some up with a fix for the button issues, like remote connectors that would be cheaper than the additional peddles you mentioned.

Hi, I watched your video some weeks ago. I bought an RC 3 on special. I like it. You stated in your video how the tap twice then tap and hold technique was counter productive , as it played a little of the loop before removal. To Avoid this, when you tap twice, Just hold down the button on the second tap. WOOSH. It's gone . No sound. Ready for next assignment.

Hello Katy, I was looking for a good video presentation about that RC3 pedal, after seeing something like 20 videos of 10 minutes each made by rock guitar players (explaining for 30 seconds that with a loop pedal you can make a loop and then showing off for the 9 next minutes://// ), I was so happy to look at your video, you just bring me the infos I was looking for ( advantages, disadvantages, how to plug an Ipod, ect...) as jazz doublebass player I can tell you that your opinion about that gear (as a violin player) is much more relevant to me than that of the 20 rock guitarists seen previously. I really enjoyed this video and your play and subscrived to your channel. Greetings from Belgium. Thank you.

  • @Musical_Chias

Good point Katy about the volume. I guess guitar players use it quite differently as it would be used in an array of other pedals to boost the lead/melody lines or a volume pedal too. You sounded great.

I iwould be interested in more gear review, yes! I'm new to the world of violin and I've never really bought anything other than the instrument itself, which came with a bow, strings and rosin thing. I use a Yamaha silent violin which is electric, and I get horrible screeching noise when I amplify it, which doesn't happen when I record from the headphones jack instead. From what you are saying, the problem may be the bridge pickup and the interaction with my guitar amp, so looking at an EQ sounds like the way to go. Anyway, to summarize, yes, more gear review please! :)

1 You play very, very, VERY WELL
2 Try to play with 2 amps (stereo) then you are going to find the harmony and the tone separatly, as you want
3 You can plug a expresion pedal, that help you to NOT press 2 times when you want to stop
4 I don't know if i tell you this but you play very, very, VERY WELL

The extra pedals you could connect are just switches, can be cheap, like www.thomann.de/se/lead_foot_lfd10.htm or be home made. The Boss RC 30 has 2 channels, which would help separate melody from background, you also get two pedals, plus more stuff you never use. Someone suggested using 2 amps to use the stereo for separating, it is more complicated, but if you have 2 inputs on one amplifier you could use that.

    • @KatyAdelson
      @KatyAdelson  6 лет назад

I'm pretty new to all of this electronic stuff too, and it can all be really overwhelming trying to learn about it. Plus, most of the info out there is for guitars, not violins... :o I plug my violin LR Baggs bridge pickup into the Para Acoustic DI, and
then into the loop pedal, and then into the Fishman mini amp. ^_^
The LR Baggs violin bridge pickup is a bridge that needs to be fit to the violin by a luthier, and it connects to a jack that clamps onto the side of the violin similar to how the chinrest is clamped onto the violin. The pickup is okay and does the job I need, but it picks up a ton of bow noise. I'm hoping I'll find something better. =)
The LR Baggs Para Acoustic DI is great for reducing some of the bow noise, and it helps clean up the signal quite a lot. I like it, but it takes a 9-volt battery and cannot be plugged into a 9-volt daisy chain power supply like most pedals.
I have learned that the Baggs bridge pickup doesn't work well with all amps. I
have no idea why, but it wouldn't work with any of the amps in a
second-hand music store I had visited. I needed to go home and get my
Fishman mini amp in order to try out any of their second-hand pedals. I
love how the Fishman mini amp sounds with the violin, and it's fairly
light and portable as far as amps go, but it's something to research. I
think it has something to do with the LR Baggs pickup needing a
"pre-amp" but I really don't know.. :/ Everything works with the Fishman amp, so I'm happy -- but I'd imagine it could become frustrating! :o
That's probably more info than you wanted, but hopefully it gives you some ideas! ^_^

Thanks! I'm trying to loop a mic with an XLR input on this pedal, I got it for X Mas (yay for looping!). Is that like, possible, or do I need a whole new loop pedal? All I see is the normal mono inputs and no XLR input. Great vid BTW!

    • @KatyAdelson
      @KatyAdelson  6 лет назад

I've never tried it with my XLR microphone, but I think it should work! I'd try to get an XLR to mono instrument cable and see if it works. Many instrument stores sell them, and it looks something like this:
      www.amazon.com/dp/B002P9LCYM/ref=psdc_11973421_t1_B0026KAUOI?th=1
They also sell adapters that can transform one of your XLR cable's end into having a mono instrument plugin end. I personally think it'd be best to try it with a new cable instead of using adapters, but I'd imagine either way would probably work!
They also have cables and adapters that split into stereo outputs, but that's a new can of worms that I haven't experimented with at all -- but I know it exists! I'd look at different cables and see if you can find one that matches the input/outputs that you need between the microphone and pedal, and see if it works. ^_^
