It’s always refreshing to see new people getting into the PS3, and it’s ‘all-purpose’ nature is something I really miss on newer consoles. It’s crazy that you managed to get one with some games for €25, the console alone is usually at least £40 here in the UK! Also, your dry humour throughout the video was brilliant. Especially the WordArt joke. You’ve earned my sub.
Another use for PlayStation 3: it serves as an amazing music player! It can read all different types of music files, categorise them into playlists and it even has a cool visualiser effect for music, you can also play music while in a game!
2024, absolutely agree. found a ps3 in the trash basically at my work, cleaned it up, took it home and slapped a spare 1tb ssd i had, works a charm. helps that the games for it are dirt cheap atm
Don't tell Sony, if you use PS3xPAD you can add support for Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers on your PS3 🤫 I experienced a tad bit of input lag when I tried it, but for the laugh I got it was well worth it 😁👍 Excellent video, I learned quite a bit! The region free blueray had never crossed my mind, good stuff!
Proud owner of a modded PS3 as well. You didn't mention emulators! With Retroarch you can use your PS3 to play practically every 8 bit, 16bit console, arcade and so forth. I play NES, SNES, GB, GBC and GBA on mine and it also has them sweeeet CRT shaders. Anyway, just subscribed :)
On Play-TV: It should still work in the UK, but you just won't be able to receive all channels because we run a mix of DVB-T and DVB-T2 transmitters. The one country where I can tell you it won't work at all is Croatia, where they have actually gone full DVB-T2. I know this because I helped a friend over there "fix" their old CRT TV by getting them a new DVB-T2 box. I then brought their old DVB-T box back to the UK and it could pick up some stuff. It was at least 30 channels, but I didn't bother counting.
Woah, I never knew that amazing studio recording of Let's Go Away was recorded for the promotion of the digital rerelease, I thought it was just a nice treat for the Internet. You learn something new every day!
I absolutely love the ps3 I still play it to this day and I always recommend it because of the great library and the fact is it's easily mobile like you said
I have owned three ps3’s in my lifetime. I sold the first two as I was still a foolish c h I l d but I recently picked up a slim to finish off my PlayStation collection. Genuinely the PS3 is an insane console, it’s hard to wrap your head around that this console came out in like 2006. I wish I could have picked up a PS3 Fat for the PS2 compatibility, but I ended up getting a PS2 Fat right before I picked up a PS3 slim. I will say the controllers are usually pretty crusty these days, the one that came with mine was COVERED in the most disgusting v I l e SLIME that I still haven’t completely gotten off. I’ve used so much isopropyl trying to disinfect that DualShock and the fact I can’t get an original DualShock without playing Russian roulette with the eBay algorithm is annoying. But in all seriousness, this is one of the best consoles ever released. The console exclusives are fantastic, and it’s in that absolute sweet spot where we have an insane amount of resources for (like mentioned) emulation and hacking. For 50-150 bucks this is a hell of a console to pick up if your interested in a dedicated emulation machine or classic Sony exclusives.
Thank you for furnishing the aftermarket with two PS3s, your generosity has helped people like me hop on board retro PS3 collecting with the supply of cheap consoles and games. 😇
Very informative, entertaining, humorous and well edited video! I already knew most of this stuff, but still enjoyed watching you put it all together together in one short video. And I would definitely love to see a PlayTV vid if you ever get around to making one!
The best and most important reason to own a PS3 is to be able to play Portal and Portal 2, at least for people that don’t have PCs. I still hope they make a Portal remaster or something for current gen consoles.
I still get my PS3 out when I fancy a game of Tekken 5 DR or Divekick. Oh, and Super Stardust HD - that was the first PS3 game I ever saw running on an HD tv (back when they weren't common) and it blew my mind.
I would honestly be really interested in that PlayTV video if that's something you can ever get around to, and as a person who only had a PS2, I legitimately had no idea about ...most of this, honestly. I'm a bit late, overall, but I'm definitely going to try my luck with this, because ... wow. Totally worth it. I mean there are so many games I want to play, and the versatility is just insane.

When f4mi tell everything that that uber-media combine could do. Its actually sound like Xbox One tried to be but miserably failed. And the fact that many media serviced works fine with PS3 im genually wanna buy it for my Dad. Just because our smart tv (from 2012) cannot open RUclips anymore. Even Netflix

If you want to play Crazy Taxi with the original soundtrack, all you need to copy in the original sound files, renamed to the new ones. Luckily the PC mod for restoring the game has all of these renamed sound files inside it!
Currently I have my PS3 superslim and then my younger brother wants PS3 superslim as well. Will find the new/used unmodified ones in local market. And oh...at first glance I hear the accent that something like Indian accent but slightly different.
PS3 is still my main gaming system, seeing off a PS4, PS5, Series X and PC over the years. As well as installing CFW, I'd recommend installing an SSD (makes a big difference overall, don't listen to the doubters, they're wrong), and if you have a Slim model (not Fat or Super Slim), looking into GPU overclocking. Be careful with the last one as you can brick your PS3 if you go too far, but it also makes a big difference if your machine is capable.
The fact that you can use the tv remote to pause a movie playing on the ps3 explains why mine turns on every time i turn on the TV (Btw the fully backwards compatible ps3s are getting Frankenstein hacked together with more reliable processors and you can fet them on eBay with the name "Frankie mod" but you probably already knew that)
Awesome video! I'm also using my PS3 for PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. I have no interested in PS5 yet since there's so many games I didnt play on PS3. I also think the graphics are great but that might be me used to retro games haha. Half in toThe Last of Us now :)
so funnily enough i'm in the UK and I actually regually used playTV until fairly recently because for recording tv programs it was the smoothest experience so even though it doesn't work for the HD channels it does still work for the standard definition channels as they still use the DVB-T standard even now
I used to have PlayTV and it was great. It should still work fine in the UK. We only use DVB-T2 for HD broadcasts. SD broadcasts still uses the older DVB-T. We don't even have that many HD channels on Freeview and the ones we do have are still available in SD.
I never knew about that USB memory card adapter I'm going to have to try and find one because I use my PS3 mainly for playing my PS1 games. I'm learning stuff with every video you post lately. Also woohoo I'm in the video :p
If you could source a 45nm CECH-21/2500 Slim PS3, you should make a 2024 edition video because GPU and VRAM overclocking is now a thing! Some managed to overclock to 1GHz!
I just realized I still have one of those here (I got it even cheaper, as a friend got rid of it and gave it to me for free) and yeah, I think I am gonna set it up. Finally something relatively recent I could still connect to my CRT!
I cried when I had to sell my ps3 slim because not only was it my stepdad's from my mom for Christmas in 09 before he passed it down to me once he got the white ps4, I knew how good it was and I knew getting another GEN ONE PS3 SLIM WITHOUT a yellow light of death wasn't gonna happen for a long time... When that hard drive finally died, a decade later, I upgraded it with a spare pc drive during my computer class before having to sell it due to hard times 3 years later... But this video made me realize that I can say fuck it, grab any model, and be juuust fiiine.
5:18 this is also possible if you have a modded ps2. Use elflauncher to copy ps1 memcard saves to pc, and convert them to .psv which is what the ps3 uses i believe. Was able to convert a ps3 save to a ps1 memcard that way
@@f4micom I bought a 500gb super slim with a controller practically unused for 50e, couldn't be happier, what an awesome console. Here in europe less than 50e are usually faulty at something or broken.
have you played From Soft's magnum opus on the Playstation Triple? Yeah I'm talking about 3D DOT GAME HEROES. check out the european version either disc or digital since it has an europe-exclusive update that fixes some loading bugs and whatnot.
Looking at this in 2024 is kinda weird. RPCS3 has reached a point where many of the games you would want to play can be emulated using a PC at higher resolutions and frame rates than the original console. The blu ray player also occasionally has issues with newer discs due to changes in DRM.
PS3 emulation needs a fairly beefy PC though, that costs many many times what a used PS3 does. Also missing the point, which is highlighting the PS3's all-round capabilities, not just its own library.
Sounds nicer to own it when you put it this way but my ps3 keeps collecting dust, after I finished my metal gear phase I’ve had almost no use for It, I just found it much better to use any other device to do its job and I kinda regret buying it but mine was like 90 and I just have a cheap 3rd party controller cause the one it came worked pretty poorly. Maybe I should give it another try
I stumbled upon your video and it is good! Great video, great content. My PS3 will always be my favorite piece of technology. Keep up! Greeting from Portugal
i already had a ps3 slim for years now like since 2015! i never modded it but what it can do is already enough for me tbh. and i did get one japenese game in 2016 that was puyo puyo tetris... yeah this was before the english release... honestly im proud of it if it ever gets rarer...
I personally prefer emulating the PS3 with RPCS3 as I have a pretty powerful PC. That lets me render PS3 games at 1440p instead of 720p, which is used even for the games that run in 1080p, as the PS3 just upscales them. I do hope that the PS4 does get hacked after Sony stops bothering to update it because a region-free 4 K Blu-ray player would be really nice.
I still have my ps3 fat 80GB somewhere in my closest. The bad thing is that the big boy had some problems with the GPU, the common yellow light of death. I hope one day I will get it rapair
Excellent video, you really cover a lot of features that other US gaming RUclipsrs don't even consider, really useful info. I'll be trying the Netflix app to see if I can bypass the pc browser problem of having terrible video buffering even though I have a good internet connection.
I've got one of these too, the only problem is both my controllers have issues (one of them has a weird left stick, the other has inconsistent buttons)
There are some really useful tutorials here on youtube that can help you fix those issues if you are comfortable with tearing apart the controllers, that's what I did and I managed to fix it up ^^
I was already so scared of hacking my PS3 that now knowing you can get banned from PSN and banned in your country is exactly why it made me scared in the first place, I don’t want to risk it, i didn’t and don’t know what could happen and if it’s bad to the point of getting banned from PSN...god even my PS3’s Time thing I have to sign in and the time thing always shows up I don’t wanna mess around. Technically I need to remove the Time thingy and replace it by opening the PS3 up...but no way I am risking that! ...i don’t know what to do!
I have a american backward compatible that I had a friend delid so it runs cooler. All 3 original playstation gens in one console plus a blu ray player, so good!
It's the only console that runs all the canon Metal Gear games (including the MSX2 titles which are included in MGS3). The only one missing is Portable Ops, but IIRC Kojima wasn't involved in that, so I consider it semi-canon. That's the main reason I bought a PS3 from my friend recently, in case I wanted to replay any of them Metal Gears. But idk if I'll ever have time for that, and the controller is broken, so it's sitting in a box for now. I'm thinking of getting into collecting anime blurays, so at least it'll be useful for that
Buying a used console in Italy = FIFA. I bought a used PS3 back in 2015 and I got the same two copies of FIFA along with other games (I was lucky enough to get Deamons Souls tho).
Well I did try once and then after some months it broke again, so I got a PSVita cause the games I played there are on PSVita too, also that's amazing for homebrew and things like that
@@frikkofrik PSVita is an awesome homebrew machine, I will try to get ahold of one as soon as I find one for sale for cheap in my area (and I also love OLED screens sooooo I'm already sold on it lmao)
Well actually I'm italian like you (I know from some older videos where you can see italian stuff lol) and on eBay you can find them but they are kind of expensive sadly
eBay is unfortunately quite expensive for consoles of this generation, I prefer to look facebook marketplace up since it usually provides you with the best local deals (like this ps3)
God I would love to import Initial D extreme stage, but my 15€ PS3 have a broken optical drive. Quindi PlayTV usa il DVB-T ancora attivo in Italia? Potrebbe essere interessante.
You can do three things: either replace the drive (you can find spare drives for cheap on eBay). backup the imported game on another PS3 and transfer the files over to your own (modded) PS3 to run it from the hard drive, or if the game is downloadable from the Japanese PSN, you can also make a japanese account and download it from there Also, yes, Italy is still using DVB-T for now and PlayTV does work, but it's in the process of transitioning to DVB-T2, so you should check when your specific region will shut down the "normal" DVB-T signal as that varies depending on your area
I think it's also mostly the same for Xbox 360 but it being less hackable and less capable as a media player gives the "budget console crown" to the ps3 tbh
Ah yes the Sony Playstation 3 Also known as the "6 in 1 Machine" Because it has: - Playstation 1 - CD Player - Playstation 2 - DVD Player - Playstation 3 - Blu Ray Player Honestly it is a pretty good deal in 2024
PS3s are too expensive in Spain. Beat up ones can be seen for 50-60€ on eBay or more. I once saw three for 20-30€ each at a local flea market, but I don't trust buying a FAT version at a place like that and find that it's dead when I come home. Those have overheating problems like FAT Xbox 360.
My ex's parents got me a Ps3 when we were together and it's probably the best thing I got from that relationship

@@f4micom Also, fun fact about my PS3: back in 2015, it got fried by a lightning strike and I only got it back in January this year
I was already so scared of hacking my PS3 that now knowing you can get banned from PSN and banned in your country is exactly why it made me scared in the first place, I don’t want to risk it, i didn’t and don’t know what could happen and if it’s bad to the point of getting banned from PSN...god even my PS3’s Time thing I have to sign in and the time thing always shows up I don’t wanna mess around. Technically I need to remove the Time thingy and replace it by opening the PS3 up...but no way I am risking that! ...i don’t know what to do!
I'll take 1 playTV video please
I have a american backward compatible that I had a friend delid so it runs cooler. All 3 original playstation gens in one console plus a blu ray player, so good!
How did you manage to mod a super slim ps3?
Literally the only way to play MGS4
The things that you can do with a PS3 are amazing, is a bummer that mine broke (I have one of the original models with the YLOD problem)
You can try reflowing it, it's not probably going to last forever but it's a fun project to try out ^^
Well I did try once and then after some months it broke again, so I got a PSVita cause the games I played there are on PSVita too, also that's amazing for homebrew and things like that
@@frikkofrik PSVita is an awesome homebrew machine, I will try to get ahold of one as soon as I find one for sale for cheap in my area (and I also love OLED screens sooooo I'm already sold on it lmao)
Well actually I'm italian like you (I know from some older videos where you can see italian stuff lol) and on eBay you can find them but they are kind of expensive sadly
eBay is unfortunately quite expensive for consoles of this generation, I prefer to look facebook marketplace up since it usually provides you with the best local deals (like this ps3)
ngl i bought it to play dantes inferno lol and now im addicted to hack n slash games
God I would love to import Initial D extreme stage, but my 15€ PS3 have a broken optical drive.
Quindi PlayTV usa il DVB-T ancora attivo in Italia? Potrebbe essere interessante.
You can do three things: either replace the drive (you can find spare drives for cheap on eBay). backup the imported game on another PS3 and transfer the files over to your own (modded) PS3 to run it from the hard drive, or if the game is downloadable from the Japanese PSN, you can also make a japanese account and download it from there
Also, yes, Italy is still using DVB-T for now and PlayTV does work, but it's in the process of transitioning to DVB-T2, so you should check when your specific region will shut down the "normal" DVB-T signal as that varies depending on your area
I own my gf's late dad's PS3. I'm very careful with it. I play so much Project Diva...too much Project Diva. I need to make the most of it lmao
What a nice vid!!
PS2 emulation is tempting HMMMMM
it's honestly one of my favourite PS3 CFW features, since it lets me play a big part of my playstation library and only keep my PS3 plugged in
@@f4micom i wish i had known about it before i went out and bought the tomb raider and prince of persia trilogies 😭
I’m getting a PS3 this weekend! I’m just.. worried that it’s a bad decision now that the ps5’s out. But i don’t want a PS5! :)
Why are you lining up your surround set on your desk ?
I really like you videos and i'm glad i discovered your channel but sometimes while you speak it sounds like you're about to burst into tears lol
7:20 I think this is a good example
25 euros that's crazy 😱
i want to see the PLAY TV on the PS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That’s what I was thinking recently lol
I think it's also mostly the same for Xbox 360 but it being less hackable and less capable as a media player gives the "budget console crown" to the ps3 tbh
bruh, I bought my PS3 in 2018, I was 20 steps ahead
TV play where?
The original ps3 is the greatest console ever made and nobody can convince me otherwise.
Ah yes the Sony Playstation 3
Also known as the "6 in 1 Machine"
Because it has:
- Playstation 1
- CD Player
- Playstation 2
- DVD Player
- Playstation 3
- Blu Ray Player
Honestly it is a pretty good deal in 2024
Id love to see a ps3 play tv video it is possible and affordable
i actually bought one to make a video around a year ago, but the dvb-t1 antennas in my area shut down so i can't really showcase how it worked :(
@@f4micom aww thats too bad but i get it.
nice intro :D
I got one for only €15 and hacked it! its nearly better then a modded wiiu 😅
Jailbreak it "Do it" 😈
CFW is the way to go ;^)
