I personally would have done a full-length black strip, adding the 'do not ovetake' sticker will change the plainness. Great job, Erin's questions are good re-enforces why you are doing things.
Put a couple of yellow "Do Not Overtake Turning Vehilce" stickers on those black plates. Then it looks like they serve a purpose. Sorry looks like Craig below already suggested that!
I did a similar bottom feed on my motorhome tanks as I had 90 litre tank under a 45 litre tank and being interconnected they never filled properly as you had to wait for the 45 to drainto the 90 litre tank and it took ages to fill. Bottom feed rules. Never had a problem since. Just put a cap on the hose connection side as you dont want mud wasps filling up your fill point. A clip on hose connection filled with silicone will do it.
Not a big fan of the black but i think you guys have done an awesome job. So well done, i think Erin is right they need something over the top of them.
Seriously Dude. I recall the first vid I watched and you were on Fraser and your awning collapsed in the wind. Although you struggled a bit, you had help and strapped it all together to finish your holiday. All I could think at the time was 'so embarrassing, the poor bugger'. I thought you really had guts to put that up for public viewing. I have watched every episode since. Seen you change vans, tell your story openly, honestly, and go from strength to strength. You cut off the locks, shared your family with us, and "IUTBC" taught us all in the caravan world a thing or two. Well done my friend. I'm old enough to be your father, be proud of what you have given FREELY to the caravan world. Keep up the good work. All the best to you and your beautiful family.
I did the same with the bottom fill. I don't have a litre counter but I slow the flow right down when nearly full to give the water time to level out that way I don't think you would need to block of the Fillers. Love you're Videos
I have the exact same tanks in our Gator X and fill will the standard fill point and get about 85lts using the same litre meter reader. As you would know the Gator X has air bags and I raise the fill side of the van to get the breather outlet in the tank to the highest point.
On the black plastic: Fit red & yellow chevron marker plates like on the back trucks. Just make sure you fit them on the correct side as they have a right & left side and a top & bottom. Also a Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle sign as you are over 7.5m you can legally display this sign on the left rear of Bertha. 🤙
Yes best to fill tanks from bottom and remove filler caps when filling ( air needs to escape and tank fills faster ) Cover caps to water inlet and mains inlet for dirt and bugs. White JG pipe ( reinforced ) is better for hot water system. 1/2in black pvc pipe would of done from filler manifold, same as draw to pump. Accumulator tank after pump are great
We did a water fill system on our van years ago which works the same as you have just done. The only difference was we used reinforced garden hose which allowed for easier routing of the hose in the confined spaces. You will find it will work very well without any issues. Great for when you buy your water from a water outlet where you pay by the litre.
We have had exactly the same setup for the last 5 years. As we only have 2x95 litre tanks we use the centre tap for mains feed. The tank feed enters via the centre entry and the top hole is used as the vent which has 12mm pipe rising upward and attaches to the floor. This ensures we have full tanks when filling. We purchased an Ozito 12volt transfer pump (10litre/minute) from Bunnings $99 which we use when filling from containers etc. We mounted the manifold further out so that the fitting protrudes outside the van- too old to crawl under to turn the taps! Works fantastic. ps I have never built caravans!
Good work guys. The lovely black thingo’s on the back you could always cover with a sign “Do not overtake turning vehicles”….. just saying for a friend 😉😉
Well done guys always good to watch, one thing I’ve done similar to mine try filling with the caps on this will force the water through up to the breather which should come out water when full and I’ve never seen those counters so thanks for that😎
Glad you did this plumbing tutorial as I'm about to do some plumbing changes and have never used the John Guest fittings. Ordered the shirt so I can feel good while i do some repairs to my van.
Hi Alex, I found with my van water tanks the big issue was with the breathers, the hose connected to them went down under the chassis rail and back up to the fill point creating an airlock as the shallow height of the tank didn't create enough pressure differential to draw fresh air in leaving water in the tank you can't access. I fitted a short piece of hose to the breathers and went straight up to the underside of the floor where I put a fitting with a stainless steel screen..... job done works great.
Agree… the back needs a strip from one side to the other….looks odd otherwise , can you get a cap to cover the water fill inlet ? To make sure water goes out the breather ?
Hi mate just got my first caravan and came across your video good job with your water system we pick up our second hand caravan at Xmas from the Gold Coast 👍
Breather would work better if on the top of the tank and possibly if it was bigger. Also filling the tank is a bit like charging the battery, bulk fill initially then top up a bit slower towards the end to get max capacity. Agree with others regarding putting some “ Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle “ stickers on the black plastic.
Thanks for your plumbing video. I found it helpful for our situation too. Our 2 x 75 litre tanks only ever fill to three quarters each. I think the breather is part of our problem too. Your individual pressure fill could do the trick for us. As you got 216.8 litres on the total fill, could it be that your tanks are actually 75 litres each? 3 tanks @ 75 litres would be 225 litres total. Just a thought. 😀
Hey guys, love the build episodes so sick of them at all, I like your idea re the stop valves on the inlet great idea I will also try! I changed mine over to fill from the one point like yours a few months back and also use the Topogee gauge! Best mod I have done in years so easy to fill. Love your vids guys, catch you of the road sometime! Cheers, Pete and Jane
Another option for the back of the caravan is to get stickers made up that say Big Bertha Thanks for a bit of an insight to the plumbing, also the Bunnings flow metre thingy 😅
If you insert the internal pipe sleeves available for John Guest pipes at the join with the fitting you will get a much more stable connection less likely to leak.
Really enjoy your content guys. Like the humour and down to earth approach. Maybe to sort the water tank issue you could move the breathers to the top of the tank to eliminate any airlock. Hope this helps.
Awesome job on fixing up good ol' Bertha. 🙂 I agree with a lot of people suggesting the overtaking signs on the black sections. However, I saw a great sticker once that would also work on Bertha. It had one arrow point right saying, "Overtakers" and an arrow pointing left saying, "Undertakers." It's a bit of fun that might be something you'd like to try. 😉
When filling your tanks, you can put the locking caps on the gravity fill points. This should block off the filling hole. The breather vent goes around the seal of the cap to allow air into the tank. 😎
Am working on the same issues you have with water tanks but I have one filler and one breather for two tanks which is a bit of a pita..just wondering what you will do when you want to drain the tanks? Good work on the van btw!
Great journey with repairs and mods, rather than ball valves can’t you obtain large plug for the water filler, leave breather open, you may have 80ltr tanks not 95ltr tanks. This would also prove your theory with minimal cost. In future I would look at going for 110ltr tanks as these are only slightly bigger and rotor molded, no seems.
I'm a bit confused. If you fit the ball valve to your gravity fillers how is the air going to get out of the tanks when you are pressure filling them? I don't think the vents that come up to your filler caps will be big enough to let the air out quickly and I've seen people split their tanks if they try to fill too quickly. Also you will need to make sure the air vent pipes don't have air locks from the water or you won't get air back into the tank when pumping from the tanks. Just a couple of things to think about hope this helps.
Enjoy you content…Think you need 3 x 12mm John Guest non return valves 1 for each tank to ensure you don’t lose any water if a tap leaks or gets knocked.
Hey guys. If you got another piece to go between so it’s black all the way across that would look better. Then put your supports stickers on it would look awesome.
The inlet on each tank need to go in the top. At least near the top, otherwise, the pressure will eventually cause the tank to crack at the joint (like the example you showed at the beginning of the clip). Cutting the "eyebrows" on an angle (inside edge [/ \]), would improve the look. I like the "Give Way to Turning Vehicle" signs as others have suggested. I think this episode, was more interesting/entertaining than watching the Super Cars at Mt Panorama today. Cheers..
I’d suggest just turning the pressure down and filling a bit slower once it overflows, you’ll get more in those tanks. The higher pressures are too much and shoot out the filler/breather .
I also fill my tanks from the bottom, to force the air out of the tanks, to prevent air locks.... I use the exact same flow meter from bunnings.... I have 2 95l tanks.... Hypothetically I should be able to hold 180lts, however my Max is 145l until my pump surges So I'm getting 72.5l from a 95l tanks.... I think there's just some usable space somewhere... I also use a Topargee Flow meter in my van. Glad its not just us 😂
Put your DO NOT OVERTAKE TURNING VEHICLE Stickers on the black plastic strips on the back of the van. They should stick out like dogs 🏐🏀's & noone should say they didn't see them. Can get them from supercheap autos.
I'm a bit like you Erin, not really sure with the black bits. What about continuing it along the back so it's like a strip? I feel that wouldn't look so random
Nice work guys, just thinking about your filling issue, maybe because your filler and breather are on the same end of the tanks and they are baffled, the flow volume is not allowing all the air out. Possibly try letting them sit for a minute or so after initial fill, then slowing the flow down and see if you can get more in. 🤔 may or may not help but worth a shot.
I agree with your partner, the black plastic looks terrible. Why would you not just pull the back window and corner moulds and replace that section of cladding? Less than a days work for someone who used to build caravans.
Hi Alex, I think a full length strip of the same checker plate with the same width as the black plastic that you silasticed on the back of the van would look better than the two blacks strip's that you silasticed and screwed to the rear of the van Best Regards George
My opinion is tank capacity quoted is the physical outside measurement (WxLxH). With a tank ribs, sidewalls, Etc. your actual capacity is about 10-15% less. Also once the water level drops below the top of the outlet your pump sucks air leaving the last 5+ liters unusable. I also got a full refund for my Topogee as it was woefully inaccurate. Bottom line is your 95l tank only holds 75l, maybe that's why your van had 5 tanks?
You wreck it when Aaron was standing underneath the filler tap outlet . 😂😂😂 . Hay why don’t you put a one way valve on filler pipes instead of the ball valve thing .
You need the yellow and black DO NOT OVER TAKE rather than the boring black plastic. Get them made same size and stick them on. They will take away the bareness, cheap and super easy to fit.
The problem with getting them made is they might be illegal. The Do Not Overtake Turning Vehicle signage has to be a specific size and at a specific height and made from a specific reflective material.
@@paulwashere.2121 then the stickers can show their media details, FB page, instagram etc ….. or both stickers can say “I BUILD CARAVANS”. Anything is better than plain old blank
I thought that you must have them, if you are over 7.5 mtrs for insurance and legal purposes? Buy the legal ones then there is no problem, they did change materials from memory to new type? (From Victoria)
Hi guys. We are replacing our external lights on our van (She is a 2009 Traveller Sensation) and would you be able to tell me the brand etc of the external lights you were gifted as they seem to be different in their functions. Thanks in advance
Hey Buddy love the build, i have a question with your Mountain Air fan. have you got any specs like how much air is coming in and as a exhaust fan for this as we thinking of getting one.
Cheers mate! Not sure on the specs but I’ll leave the link here so you can ask them directly about it 👍🏻 www.cgearmats.com/product/dust-suppression/74?cs=true&cst=custom

Or painted white to match the van
I had the same thought should have done the full width; then it wouldn't look like your trying to cover something up lol
Agree with having the black all the way across as a strip not two bits. Better still use a strip of checker plate to tie in with below?
Add more stickers to the black panels as you travel 😊 then intentional and will match your drop down bench

When filling from the bottom it forces any air in the lines of fairly quickly 👍🏻
some water fillers you can screw on a hose tap fittings then you can fill them under pressure

Thank you! Can’t wait!
Check your water delivery meter. I have one the same and it shows 18L when I fill a 20L jerry so it reads under. Yours might be the same.
A few comments around this, I think I will do another test on it 👍🏻
It might be worth making sure the litre meter reader is accurate with a known bucket size or equivalent?
I did do some testing early days of using it but definitely worth checking again!
Paint the black plastic to match the van
The inlet on each tank need to go in the top. At least near the top, otherwise, the pressure will eventually cause the tank to crack at the joint (like the example you showed at the beginning of the clip).

Erin....."you used to build caravans".....I think she has had a gut full.
What about a simple non return valve in your old filler lines.
Maybe attach some more reflectors over the holes.
Already put extra ones over some of the other holes, don’t went it to end up one giant reflector 😂😂

Not sure on the specs but I’ll leave the link here so you can ask them directly about it 👍🏻
