How Clavamox works in Dogs and Cats. Dr. Dan explains.

Hi Everyone!
My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about the antibiotic clavamox. Clavamox is amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is the antibiotic in Clavamox. the Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic. This means that amoxicillin is what actually kills the bacteria causing the infection.
However, sometimes bacteria can become resistant to amoxicillin producing something call beta-lactamase. The beta lactamase will prevent the amoxicillin from killing the bacteria. By adding the clavulanic acid, the amoxicillin will not be damage by the beta-lactamase allow it to fight the infection.
Clavamox is common prescribed by veterinarians for gram positive bacterial infections. Clavamox is used for infections from skin to bladder infections.
In most cases cats and dogs do well when prescribed clavamox. Like any antibiotic GI upset like vomiting and diarrhea can happen, and antibiotic allergic reactions are possible too. Always call your veterinarian if you feel like you pet is having an adverse reaction to an antibiotic.

Thank you so much Dan! We're on the tiny island of Cyprus, in the Mediterranean sea & look after around 100 cats. Klamox, as it's sold here has been a life saver for so many of our cats. Thank you especially for the scientific explanation of how it works. Our cats don't mind the taste of Klamox, but hate the Augmentin version, which is very bitter. Dan, would you kindly do a video on Flagyl (Metronidazole) - this is bitter as gall & the cats hate it. Unfortunately, in Cyprus it's available only as an oral syrup, or intravenously - no intramuscular option. It's essential in treating Giardiasis, but as I've said it's so hard to administer orally.

Can you give amoxicillin and baytril together? My dogs UTI came back after we stopped the antibiotics at our vets guidance. I’m suspecting the infection was not fully cleared even tho her urine did show clean. She is peeing blood today, I already gave her baytril this morning but she doesn’t seem to be showing any improvement. The first time it seems that the amoxicillin helped her much faster, would it be ok to give her the amoxicillin now even tho she had the baytril already this morning? 😮‍💨
