      Mediocre at best I'm sorry to say. The musicians seem to be playing for all their worth but somehow the result is just o.k. Listen to Bernstein and suddenly the music takes on another dimension but then again that was before the time when conductors thought it fashionable to muck around with "period" sound (the orchestra seems to be a mixture)

      Jim W amen!

    • @gabrielkaz5250
      @gabrielkaz5250 4 года назад

      @Karenleeholt For it is that the gesture is kind of inefficient, with no consistance in it. I never feel like she would be carrying music or what, all is just quick without matter, and without importance. What I mean is for example Pletnev conducting Roméo and Juliette. He doesn't have a complex gesture but really powerful, you can feel intensity of music in his hands when necessary.
      I wouldn't use her spasmic aspect of her gesture as a critique, for me it can be good (excellent with Solti conducting in rehearsal the Wagner's Siegfried Funeral March) or useless.
      But these 2 vidéos we can evaluate the music it self. And it's not glorious, I'm not a pro but I can clearly hear no emotion, intensity, the music is kind of self contemplative, typically, if you listen to Stokowski or Bernstein's Leonore ouverture. The music is really pushing forward.
      In Mirga's vidéo, at the beginning the Crescendo is hardly hearable, while in the two precedent conductors, you feel everything comming. In this vidéo it's really like the 1:13 where the big moment seems to Come from nowhere. From 1:05 to that 1:13 moment, there is nearly no Crescendo.

    Her gender and age shouldn't matter: she truly seems to deserve being watched and followed. It's a pity the CBSO are doing neither - no line, just an attacking rhythm, and by 1" as she's trying to push the tempo the pulse falls apart. There's no way that, blindly listening, you could fairly call this a great performance. And that's a shame, as everyone on stage is worth a great performance.
