  • My most recent retro computer purchase: a model that we had when I was a kid that brings back... at least some fond memories. Showing off the upgrades and repairs I've had to do to it, as well as the HP System Recovery program!
I realized that I never actually mentioned the specs of this computer anywhere in the video... It has a 500 MHz Intel Celeron, 128 MB of RAM (upgraded from its original 64 MB), a 15 GB hard drive (repurposed from a different computer I had, would have originally come with a 13 GB hard drive), an HP CD-Writer Plus 8000 Series CD-RW drive, a Rockwell/Conexant Riptide sound card/modem (although it's apparently a different model of Riptide than the one that would have come with it originally), and on-board Intel 810 graphics. It has no options for an AGP graphics card or any processors other than Celerons. But I don't care; it's what we had when I was a kid (or close enough), and that's good enough for me!

I figured out what was happening with Toy Story Animated Storybook, and it only took me 24 years! The music freezes at the beginning of each scene... because of the on-screen display. Disabling that fixes it.

late 90s compaq presario mini towers were equally horrible to work in. A friend who had one had installed RAM in one, but still had problems with the system afterward, and when I checked it out on a visit to his house, found out the RAM was properly seated b/c it was so cramped it hadn't gone in right. (I corrected that.)
