- Welcome back to the clinic! Let's talk about cosmetics in MMOs and how this relates to Ashes.

Ashes of Creation is an open world MMORPG set in a fantasy environment where you can choose different classes and races to adventure through with your friends. Intrepid Studios is the developer behind the game. They’re technically an indie studio, but their creative director Steven Sharif has a clear vision for his video game: Massively Multiplayer Role Playing Game. He wants to put the massive back in MMO. Exploring dungeons, griding for gear, crafting armor/weapons, learning new spells, and competing in large scale PvP battles. High end PvE such as raids will mainly occur in the open world. Bosses will spawn and roam through the land. Are YOU ready to enter the world of Verra?
I would much rather have purchasable cosmetics in the game than any sort of p2w, but i would like for the "extremely hard to earn Legendary items" to be even better looking than the purchasable cosmetics and not just "on par" with them. I want people who have earned the Legendary in game cosmetics to want to use them instead of any cosmetics from the item shop.
That’s a great point. The in game achievable cosmetics should be the best imo too.
that would be awesome, however they kinda messed that up already by making some insane cosmetics in the preorder packs haha
The Wheel of Time War brought back all the feels, the first big Merger against the Sarragalla crew was my second favorite gaming experience, only second to the discord reviews of our wars shortly after. Can't wait for Ashes!
Yes dude! I feel the exact same way. Watching film on our gameplay afterwards was always so fun. Imagine doing that in a game with way more content!
I still remember getting my Epic Pally Mount back then, I think 3 of us got it at the same time. They were still quite rare, so it was pretty cool riding around IF.
I agree, cosmetics can ruin visual progression if not managed carefully. I believe they should be limited to specific types and tiers to preserve the sense of achievement. That’s why I like Ashes of Creation's approach, and I agree with your point in general.
Please keep in mind that many of the clips in this video explain the transmog system, which does not apply to Costumes and pet Cosmetics.
Costume and pet cosmetics don't have a level restriction. Building, ship, caravan and mount cosmetics require an in-game item to be obtained first to apply the cosmetic.
Great points! I had a whole section on costumes, but my video was long enough already. Maybe that'll be a future one.
Great video Dr Burns!
Thanks Snacks!
The doc is in!
Sup Hellstocker, thanks for watching!
I love your videos, new sub here!
Thanks squatch! I’m still evolving and trying to find my groove. I hope you enjoy. I’ll be interested to hear your take on my back catalogue.
The only transmog I like is when you've earned the armor, and maybe get some better gear but can transmog it for the armor you earned and like more.
Yeah agreed. I'll probably restate that in another video.
Great video!
Thank you!
Personally I’d like to pay to win so I can get the endgame cosmetics faster. In an ideal world, the richest people have the best experience.
Hahahaha
I find everytime I buy cosmetics in game(rarely) I end up quitting shortly after. Idk why, or if it's even related I've just noticed it over the years
That makes sense. Part of feeling like you’ve beat a game is visual progression.
Mrs. Bezos killed me. 😂💀
yes. Collecting new pieces or armour (that you can use with transmog) is what i find fun in games, that's why i buy games where i can do that (and some of those games run on subcriptions) but i find buying skins boring, and even when i buy one i never find a reason to buy another one. for me it's not about money, it's about fun.
Also most games will have skins as complete suits that you can't match with other pieces, which is boring. let me mix and match.
Yes! The ability to mix and match is yuuuuge!
Does seem harder to tell what a little Dwarven character is wearing since they're soo much smaller.
Tbh I'm surprised MMOs with subs have increased the prices yet. Most other subscriptions are, and we've had quite a lot of inflation since 2004. I wonder if increasing the sub to $20 a month would outweigh cash cosmetics? I wouldn't really mind paying even $30 a month for a game that was great and had no cash shop at all. Seems like that would produce more revenue than cash cosmetics, I don't think many people are buying a $20 skin every month.
great vid
Thanks Amir!
Yes. Case and point classic wow.
100%
100% yes
Genuinely curious! If this was your game, what would you do in order to generate revenue?
Hey! I’m more okay with cosmetics at endgame. Otherwise I’d do furniture and emotes.
Transmogging gear you've earned onto gear is nice. I'm ok with having to earn it. But if I gotta take a huge downgrade in my armors appearance because a gear piece is big upgrade I need. I'd be sad. Especially if it doesn't match other stuff. I'm trying to be a death knight but my new armor piece is Gold with blue ribbons and sparkly effects.. anyhow. Transmog is important. Destiny 2 shows this. Of course their shader system is disgustingly bad. I'll earn the armor. But I wanna transmog it over other armors. Preferably be account bound.
I agree, mainly for endgame
The wc3 peon voice caught me off guard, lol'd
Haha glad you got the reference
Yes.
I would pay a monthly fee for no cosmetic shops or pay to win
I'm torn. I hope that we have the old-school WoW bad asses who "beat the game." I think the low fantasy simple stuff can be cooler anyway. Lord of the rings low fantasy is my favorite. Specializing on a small scale like belt attachments and stuff would make for unique, realistic, and finely tuned costumes.
I agree, the small stuff could add up and look great. I'm allll about LotR!
All caught up... damn. Anywho, yeah, I'm one of those who like to "tactically abuse" transmog systems. In WoW, I transmogged my rares and epics to common and and went out gathering. Usually had a good harvest... of Honour Points :D
Hahaha that’s smart. I’m really glad Ashes will have requirements. It forces everyone to tactically use cosmetics when they don’t.
i transmogged the starting clothes in new world and look like a shipwrecked hobo at max level. the fashionistas aren't impressed. :(
hahaha
really hope i can hide a cloak without needing a cosmetic slot, because I absolutely hate cloaks with a passion and they always clip through the Armor / character meshes. even in the in game clips we've seen so far the capes are flap around like a poorly rigged ragdoll.
sadly some of the systems in ashes look less and less fun the more they share about it. but still going to try it out
I do agree and disagree on the same time. Reasoning is simple. Lets take an example from wow. If you have the merciless gladiator gear or you have the mythic raid gear everyone knows that's earned trough hard work. Whereas everyone also knows what is bought. If some people wants to buy some "cool looking" gear, then by all means they should do it. Everyone will still know who is who.
Oh man you cannot have cosmetics purchasable in an MMO. Half the fun is seeing the dude on the server with a crazy armour set from a crazy hard dungeon or raid. Being able to buy armour ruins that.
@@parko246 seriously! In the video I’m working on right now I propose a solution.
@@TheCopiumClinic very much looking forward to it mate. I may be in the minority as a boomer gamer but I'd prefer a higher subscription fee than anything like cosmetics. But looking forward to what you think dude.
Visual progression is genuinely an outdated system built when games had no other choice but to represent style through effort. The truth is Fashion should always take president over all other options. Players of every caliber should be able to visually express their character through freedom of cosmetic choices.
Visual progression always locks players into a system of "THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL LOOK LIKE NO MATTER WHAT" but a lot of people just want create a shaman or a witch or a demon or a cat girl cowgirl.
The point is that a system that forces players to go earn a visual piece of gear to finish a look, lock players out of visual choice until they go and complete every task required, just so they can look how they wanted to look the entire time they were grinding for the gear they wanted in the first place.
Isn't that what transmog systems are for? You still have visual progression but end game characters can make their characters look however they wish so long as they earn those items. Tbh I totally understand why they have cosmetics in this day and age, it just makes too much money to not do it and without a high sub charge it just isn't that feasible without it for a business.
At the end of the day they are a company and need to pay salaries and bills.
