Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders

  • Two squirrel proof bird feeders. One is a store bought feeder with a very simple but yet effective design. The other one is a homemade house like feeder, protected from squirrels by electricity. The birds really like the house like one because it gives them good cover and defends against hawk attacks. The electric fence does not harm the squirrels but it does make them forget about eating bird food.

The best BEST way to squirrel proof using a pole type system is to use around your pole is a 6" stove pipe around your pole going up as high as four to five feet. and keep feeder away from anything to where squirrels can't jump onto the feeder.

I have that cylinder baffle on my feeder pole, which looks identical to the one you call store bought, only longer and without the feeder on top, and it has worked perfectly for many years, totally squirrel proof. Then last week,a large grey squirrel showed up,grabbed the 7/8" feeder pole with his hind paws, and nimbly jumped over my baffle! I have installed a 3 foot length of leftover 2" ID PVC pipe under the baffle. The idea is it is too wide for him to grasp with both paws together to jump over the baffle. I haven't seen the culprit lately,so I am not sure it will work.

Any feeder on a metal pole can be electrified easily. I have a small unit like yours (TSC ) with one electrode to the poll one to the feeder (mine has a metal base)if plastic put a wrap of bare wire around the perch area and connect other electrode to it. The birds won't touch both so no danger to them but when the squirrel climbs the pole and touches the feeder POOF he jumps and never comes back. In fact they remember haven't seen one this year and didn't hook it up yet. Do not read the instructions on the electric fence unit. Nothing goes to ground unless your pole is in the ground. Mine is attached to my deck.

I am surprised of your disregard for safety for your electrical outlet setup. It is illegal to use an extension cord as a permanent installation. 120 volts is very dangerous and nothing to fool around with if you don't know what you are doing. I would suggest going to Home Depot and getting a wiring book to learn how to run a duplex Receptacle box with a polycarbonate cover out to your Pole using UF cable from box to box w/conduit stubups or using conduit below the frost line for your area. I'm surprised no one has said anything to you yet. In certain circumstances if a homeowner does any wiring to his home not following the NEC which is the (National Electrical Code ) it can jeopardize your fire Insurance on your home. I don't care what you do with your home but keep it safe and it's not hard or expensive to keep it safe. I hope you at least have the common sense to plug it into an outside GFCI ( Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter ) Receptacle with a polycarbonate cover to prevent rain infiltration. Check with your local inspector they are nice people and want you safe.

Neither of those is squirrel proof. Squirrels will hop onto it from a nearby fence, building, or tree branch. Believe me, they can jump great distances and most backyards have trees and other objects they can climb. For it to be squirrel proof, you need to make a smaller opening that only a bird can fit through to get to the seeds. That way even if a squirrel gets on the feeder (and they will), they won't be able to reach the bird seed.
