Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders

- Two squirrel proof bird feeders. One is a store bought feeder with a very simple but yet effective design. The other one is a homemade house like feeder, protected from squirrels by electricity. The birds really like the house like one because it gives them good cover and defends against hawk attacks. The electric fence does not harm the squirrels but it does make them forget about eating bird food.

those are both effective squirrel proof bird feeders thanks for sharing
I like that first feeder they're both cool
Good job lovely design both keeping squirrels off permanently brilliant 😍🇬🇧👍
Hello from the UK. Great to see your bird feeder. Very interesting design.
Way to think outside the feeder. I love the creativity.
Great ideas. Thanks for sharing. You have a well tended yard. Very pretty.
The best BEST way to squirrel proof using a pole type system is to use around your pole is a 6" stove pipe around your pole going up as high as four to five feet. and keep feeder away from anything to where squirrels can't jump onto the feeder.
My sister buys the black oiled sunflower seeds in a huge bag and they love them ty for sharing !!!!
Yes. They seem to love the sunflower but waste the other seeds if you buy the mixed stuff.
This is actually so simple it’s brilliant. You can also run those fence chargers off a 12 volt battery.
Cardinals? Are you from Ohio?
@@samhuffman3688or Virginia?!? My mom has a gazillion!!! They’re the majority of her birds too
Great build!
Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Welcome!
I have that cylinder baffle on my feeder pole, which looks identical to the one you call store bought, only longer and without the feeder on top, and it has worked perfectly for many years, totally squirrel proof. Then last week,a large grey squirrel showed up,grabbed the 7/8" feeder pole with his hind paws, and nimbly jumped over my baffle! I have installed a 3 foot length of leftover 2" ID PVC pipe under the baffle. The idea is it is too wide for him to grasp with both paws together to jump over the baffle. I haven't seen the culprit lately,so I am not sure it will work.
Nicely done and beautiful place. 👍
Thanks so much!!
Nice like them both 👍
whoa , you don't play with this, you won!
very nice design and electrics is awesome .. well donme
Thanks for the nice comment. I really appreciate it!!
lmao damn. these are the best defended sunflower seeds in the whole world
The other seed types have filler in them, which birds ignore. I only buy sunflower seed too.
Man, you have a really soothing voice. I’m going to build that electric bird feeder for my sister when her kids are old enough. I thought it would be a good lessons for my niece and nephew but my sister thinks other wise. (Kidding)
Aspects Inc. has some nice domes to prevent the seed from getting wet.
Good thinking
Sounds like Cicada Season.
Love it.
Miss that background sound since moving to Pasadena
It's so nice I immediately thought of the beach and summer omg 😍
You are so correct... I bought one of those expensive squirrel proof feeders and it did not work! It is all about that post:) I imagine that it works very well for raccoons/skunk/groundhog and rats that all love the black oil sunflower seeds and that I have seen climb and raid.)
brilliant, wish my husband would build this for me
Any feeder on a metal pole can be electrified easily. I have a small unit like yours (TSC ) with one electrode to the poll one to the feeder (mine has a metal base)if plastic put a wrap of bare wire around the perch area and connect other electrode to it. The birds won't touch both so no danger to them but when the squirrel climbs the pole and touches the feeder POOF he jumps and never comes back. In fact they remember haven't seen one this year and didn't hook it up yet. Do not read the instructions on the electric fence unit. Nothing goes to ground unless your pole is in the ground. Mine is attached to my deck.
The store bought feeder may be this- (from Amazon)
Birds Choice NP431 Classic Squirrel Resistant Wild Bird Feeder with Pole Mount Included, Weather and Squirrel Proof Backyard Birdseed Feeder, Green
Thanks for info on the Amazon Bird feeder!
What a great idea.....
Do you have problems with House Sparrows dominating feeders?
I am going to build something like yours. I am adding 1 1/2" square wire around it as well. This will keep out the black birds. I don't know how that will affect the cardinals though, still working on that idea.
Cardinals can get though an opening of 1 and 3/4
Put cooking oil on the blue feeders pole just to watch them slide down the pole is too funny. Cool idea on the shocker but them little guys are crafty they will figure something out.
Thanks for the comment. I have done that oil trick before and your right, it is too funny! They are really smart!
how would some thin sheet metal wrapped around 4x4 post been ok to do
Squirrel proofing begins at 3:00
What lovely ideas! Thankfully I don't have squirrels in my area, just some darn, chaotic pigeons lol!
Where did you get the blue cylinder feeder? I have not seen that on the internet
Search for pole mounted classic feeder by Nature Products - I found it on Ama---, - gonna paint it red to look like a gumball machine.
Where to purchase the cylinder version?
nice feeder . You could do what i did lots cheaper . I bought a row of aluminum at home depot and attached it to my post all the way up and also put it on the roof so even if they jump they will slide off.
Great idea!!
HI Stephen. Would you mind taking a picture of what it looks like? I am interested :) Thanks
Are electric fences legal in your locality?
As far as I know.
I would suggest a video or two of squirrels trying would be entertaining.
I agree. They only try it once and they don't come back for more. Only seen a couple get it.
What the name of the store bought one?
You must be in Florida I see Spanish moss and palmettos.
Just sprinkle cayenne pepper in the bird food. Squirrels hate it and it doesnt affect the birds
Ummm... he already solved his squirrel problem.
Wow! Didn't see any cows in your yard either. Probs an easier and cheaper way. Shock the Monkey!
That is one elaborate anti-squirrel system! I imagine it works on raccoons as well?
I am surprised of your disregard for safety for your electrical outlet setup. It is illegal to use an extension cord as a permanent installation. 120 volts is very dangerous and nothing to fool around with if you don't know what you are doing. I would suggest going to Home Depot and getting a wiring book to learn how to run a duplex Receptacle box with a polycarbonate cover out to your Pole using UF cable from box to box w/conduit stubups or using conduit below the frost line for your area. I'm surprised no one has said anything to you yet. In certain circumstances if a homeowner does any wiring to his home not following the NEC which is the (National Electrical Code ) it can jeopardize your fire Insurance on your home. I don't care what you do with your home but keep it safe and it's not hard or expensive to keep it safe. I hope you at least have the common sense to plug it into an outside GFCI ( Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter ) Receptacle with a polycarbonate cover to prevent rain infiltration. Check with your local inspector they are nice people and want you safe.
No squirrels?

Those DO NOT look like cardinals.
What is the make of the bird feeder?
Search for pole mounted classic feeder by Nature Products - I found it on Ama---, - gonna paint it red to look like a gumball machine.
Let's see it working!
A curiosity. For the 8+ mins of video no squirrels anywhere and no birds.
They're not gonna come around while he's out there.
@@spicey6646 Why? When I'm out there turning over my compost, they ring the area in anticipation of getting the various insects any other stuff they find yummy.
why not just screw some aluminum sheeting around the post , the squirrels slip off the metal
Why bother? He said they work fine as they are.
I'm trying to electrify my feeders also. Could you email me and help me?
Test it if it is squirrel proof.
It has been tested. 100% squirrel proof.
@@10630390: I believe you but where is the video for us to see how good it is.
@@mdsuavejr I witnessed a test but I didn't have my camera handy. Squirrel got bit by the electricity and went over the privacy fence at about Mach 2!!
@@10630390 LOL.
Black sunflower seed is too fatty for birds. Grey-striped seed is far better.
I think I'll pass on electrocuting the squirrels
Actually just shocking them. Not electrocution, (killing them).
Save all the money from electric fence, and spend it on decent air gun, they don't come back from the grave.
Yep. I do that too.
Doesn't another squirrel take it's place?
@@314Tazo Guess it would depend on location, I took out 8 last year and I was still seeing some in my yard as if I did nothing.
Melvyn - You're an idiot.
A dead squirrel doesn't hurt my conscience but how you dispose of those carcases?
Neither of those is squirrel proof. Squirrels will hop onto it from a nearby fence, building, or tree branch. Believe me, they can jump great distances and most backyards have trees and other objects they can climb. For it to be squirrel proof, you need to make a smaller opening that only a bird can fit through to get to the seeds. That way even if a squirrel gets on the feeder (and they will), they won't be able to reach the bird seed.
I rubbed Vaseline on the pole that my birdfeeder was on and I literally haven’t had a problem cents and you are dealing with somebody that has a literally tried everything!
I will try this. Thank you 🙏
cents?
A neon transformer would be my choice, then I could fill the freezer with fresh meat!
Why object to squirrels at a bird feeder? At our bird feeder the birds aren't bothered by the presence of squirrels. The squirrels behavior is equally satisfying to watch from our deck while drinking our morning coffee.
They eat a lot more than birds do and some people don't want to spend that much on bird feed.
@@jonhohensee3258 Thank you.
So you spent this whole vid bragging about how you made them without showing if they actually work or not. There are hundreds of "squirrel proof feeders that aren't. It's like your showing a car for sale and not allowing test drives... thumbs down
Oh boy, what a negative Nelly you are. There's nothing in the title that promises or even implies that you'll see footage of squirrels attempting to get at the seed.
I want to see one get lit up
Too much talking
Go away.
You talk too much but don't say anything.
Go away.
