They were forced to remove the character indeed, but however they would explain Tawna's departure inside the Crash universe was pretty much up to them.
I kinda wish they would do something more with Evil Coco. Possibly as part of a game which features reverse alignment versions of all the characters where Evil Crash, Coco, Crunch and AkuAku are the villains, acting as mirrors to Cortex and co. Evil Coco = Neo Cortex (the scientist and inventor) Evil Crash = N. Gin (the assistant and go-to guy) Crunch = Tiny Tiger (the muscle and the enforcer) AkuAku = UkaUka (the boss) If they continue doing remakes, they should keep Tawna with Crash and give her more screen-time as a full-time character, possibly giving her some kind of skill which would allow her to contribute to the gameplay.
Probs why Crash didn't have any relationships past Tawna: Her sudden parting for Pinstripe not only damaged his self-confidence, but likely destroyed any trust in women in a romantic sense, thinking that they'd be just as likely to leave him as Tawna did. But that's just my thought on it. What do you guys think? Why do you think Crash never had a girlfriend after Tawna?
Tire Fire Well why can't he? We already know that he's been hit at least once by the Evolvo-Ray, then placed in the Cortex Vortex(This is what made Ripper Roo insane, yes, but it also made him hyper-intelligent). Thus, it's possible that Crash could have near-human brain functions.
They think they got rid of Tawna because she was "inappropriate", and made up the dumb "oh she just went off with pinstripe" (which makes no sense that she would go with him because he was associated with Cortex.) so it seemed like there was a reason. It was so cute seeing her and crash together in the N-Sane Trilogy, they made her seem so lovable and tough, whilst still being hot like before. I hope she stays with Crash in further games. (Though I can kinda see it like a Forrest Gump kind of thing where after leaving they later realize that they still miss each other and that no one else compares, just minus the aids, drugs, and Jenny's unlikability by fans)

Only they had to tone down that design to what you see in the games now, so after feeling disappointed with the first game she was just dropped entirely.

The real reason why Tawna was removed after CB1 is due to the complaints from Universal Interactive about her being too inappropriate for a family game and was thought to be a "sexual themed character" for mature audiences and Naughty Dog removed her from the series because they were not happy with her forced redesign, as she did not closely resemble their original intentions. What was their original intentions, you may wonder? According to the production bible for CB1, it reveals that she is supposed to be a more courageous and capable character than just being a damsel in distress. And don't bother saying "because manga says so", because that is not considered to be canon. They took that inconsistency and twisted it into a cruel joke for the manga adaptation. They only did their own continuity without anyone's consent. Shame on you, TPSH, for neglecting mentioning this.
There is a difference between real life circumstances and the explanation for them within the universe. It happens similarly in TV shows or movie franchises, when a production company, for instance, does not agree terms with the actor due to a financial disagreement or whatever it may be and then within the universe of their show they "kill off" the character, saying he "died" or "left the country" or whatever else could have happened. Similar case here, in real life it was indeed the fact that she was considered a little inappropriate visually, so it was best to cut her out. But to somehow justify that within the universe, Naughty Dog made up a tale that she went to Pinstripe. This was picked up by the comic book creator and included in the Manga, as well as years later in Crash Boom Bang. By far we have not seen her reappear with anyone else, so currently we can't draw any other conclusions to her in-game existence other than what ND originally told us. That's what my "it remains widely accepted and canonical to this day" remark means. My apologies if I didn't clarify this well enough.

Honestly, I think they found the Crash franchise to be all too simple to try and factor in a complex plot with character development. Naughty Dog can write a hell of a screen play if their future titles had anything to say about it (Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, Last of Us...) and Crash just doesn't need it.

I personally don't consider Tawna Leaving Crash for Pinstripe Canon since they were essentially forced to do that.
