  • Chatham Infantry Barracks was opened in 1757 to house troops manning the fortifications which had recently been built to defend the Dockyard. Accommodating some 1,800 men, Chatham was one of the first large-scale Army barracks in England.
Within the space of 20 years, it had taken on an additional role as the Army Depôt of Recruits and Invalids: accommodating 'a mixed mass of people, viz. recruits destined for regiments which were abroad, prisoners confined on account of desertion and other military offences, added to which was a proportion of invalids, sent home from foreign stations on account of old age, or bodily infirmity'.[126] The establishment of the Depôt was linked to the appointment in 1778 of an 'Inspector General and Superintendent of the Recruiting of all the Forces employed on foreign service', based in Chatham, who provided a degree of centralised oversight of recruitment (responsibility for which had previously been left entirely to the regiments). During this time, Chatham Depôt provided basic training for new recruits. This role ceased in 1801, however, when the entire Depôt establishment moved to Parkhurst Barracks on the Isle of Wight (where the recruits were less prone to find ways of deserting).
The Infantry Barracks then went on to serve as a home depot for numerous regiments stationed around the globe. In 1928 the barracks was taken over by the Royal Engineers and renamed Kitchener Barracks. One barrack block remains from 1757; the rest was largely demolished and rebuilt to a more modern design in the 1930s-50s. The barracks remained in military use until 2014.
In 2014 the site was sold to a property developer, with permission given the following year for the building of 295 homes. The main 1930s barracks building is being retained, along with the remaining earlier structures. The new development has retained the name Kitchener Barracks.

I live here in Gillingham just down the road. You are correct no one has been in the old barracks until now. The other Barracks just down the road is the Royal engineer's barracks stationed by the regiment in Gillingham Medway Kent. Kitchener barracks where you are is in Chatham, not Rochester Kent. I stayed at the old barracks when I ended my last army duty over in the middle east, I was stationed there whilst waiting on accommodations after my army end of services after 22 years in the army.

In my city here in France they transformed military barracks buildings into Office’s or housings to keep the beautiful building’s from 1880-1900...
One entrance gate ,which looks like from a castle, is now in the middle of a roundabout...

Hi Mat im sure you no your torches but you should try the 4000k atrolux mf01 1500lm. Noticed your light looks around 4000k. I don't like how the ice white 6500k looks on camera 5000s a little better 4000k Lookes almost like natural sunlight to the eye. Much nicer then the ice white light on camera to. It's around half price at the moment from ther main supplier. 😉 👍
