R is the hardest sound to make in Spanish for many learners. In this video I describe exactly how trilled R's work, and what you need to do to master it.
Many students get discouraged by the difficulty of pronouncing the R sound in Spanish because it is not a sound that is used in English or many other languages, but in this video I hope to show that this sound can be learned by anyone with a little practice, and it is not entirely different from some other sounds that do exist in English.

This was good. I can at times do the roll but didn't quite get how roll the 'r' with the voicing. Maybe I should look at it again. Providing a double r word such as Perro - dog or other words would be helpful

As a native spanish speaker, I can tell the r/rr and ñ are difficult even for us. I learnt to pronounce the r/rr until my 12 years old. Don't give up, it takes its time.
The ñ isn't difficult for us English speakers.. i don't think I've heard anyone complain about it😅😅💖

My brother's name is Carlos, I could only pronounce "Calo" as a little girl so the name stuck, I'm 46 and he's still "Calo".
@@V.E.R.O. I don't know if this could help but try to pronounce "Carulo" but the ru as short as you can. I used to have the same problem when I was a kid

I tried many times. Now, this rr sound made me want to cry.
I had an English teacher that could produce the R sound way better than me that speaks Spanish as a native language.

I speak Spanish but I can't pronounce the soft R, the worst thing is that I feel bad seeing that all English speakers can and even after speaking it for 15 years, I also need it for Japanese
I was never able to do it and was always jealous of people who could. Now I used quarantine to learn it and I FINALLY CAN!! now I'm watching this to learn the difference between the two - thank you!!! It's very interesting

A bit late to mention this, but funny fact, the Edith Piaf RR sound is not a dialect, it's a Jazz technic of singing in France in the 50's. That's what a French person told me, his grandfather used to sing in the past too, quite interesting fact, a specific sound for singing.

I’m a Spanish speaker at home with my family and I can’t get the flapped R right, all my R’s get uncontrollably trilled even for a split second and my abuela doesn’t know if I’m saying for (pero) vs dog (perro) asides from context
Well it's better to mix up pero and perro than pera and perra! 😅

Felicitaciones. Muy buen video. Congratulations. Very good video. Speaking of sounds...... I try to explain to my students what the "th" sounds like in English, but they still make the same mistake over and over again. It is very difficult for those who come from Latin america to produce that sound. On the other hand, I have had students that come from Spain and the "th" sound for them comes very natural because of the "ceceo" of Spain. Good luck with the rr sound! Keep practicing.

Beware - this video is reversed so the IPA symbols are mirrored. I found the information helpful, even if it didn't result in a breakthrough for me. Darn it's hard!

Hi dude, I have a question:
Did you learn Spanish in college? If so, I've always wondered what exactly spanish (or any language) majors have to go through for their training?
I really can't do the machine gun sound. Does it have to do with your tongue's length? Because I think my tongue is shorter than most people, so that must be why I can't do that R sound?
I can do uvular trill very well but the alveolar not at all. Even to the point when I try to tongue trill I end up just trill my throat. I don’t know how to separate them :(
Lol the tap was awesome. Easier than I thought. Very cool. I understood instantly especially how you described how we hold the tongue on the ridge when saying T, L, N, etc. But just tapping it quickly with the r sounds cool. Slight vibration to it. I can do the rr now. Took maybe a week or two to get it fairly well. I've been able to do the uvula vibration since I was probably 12 though.

To the "thrill r" sound think in a old telephone ringing "teereereereereem"
I would have started the lesson from the end. The passive tongue was the most helpful to me.

A second thing is it was great that you gave the word Potter p a r a and it would have been even better had you given more words and use that instead of the longer explanation and then you really gave no words to show The double r to be able to practice with so and to watch your mouth as you said it thank you

Same.. sometimes i do a mix. What ive learnt is to not trill the spanish and "purr the back of your throat". It wouldmt work

I think Edith Piaf used an alveolar trill when she sang. I don't think it is possible to hold a note that long using an uvular trill. Besides, the alveolar trill is like an old fashioned pronunciation of the letter r in French. Opera singers also always use alveolar trills when they sing in French.
By learning arabic ,spanish R isn’t too much of an extreme

The only time I have trouble with these sounds is when they’re preceded by a consonant, like “sr” or “tr”... is there a specific trick for these? Or just the same thing as you mentioned?

For example try pronouncing "trabajo" like this "tarabajo" but you have to do it fast, easy as that.

Can someone native speaker tell me if Spanish r is the same as flap t in American English?

In spanish language there are two R: one is 'Soft R' and the other 'Strong R'. For example, if you says the word "Caro" (with soft R) means Expensive; if you says "Carro" (with Strong R) means Car. And yes, the "soft R" sounds how american english tt, identical sound of F.E. "bottel". In the other hand, the "strong R" doesn't exist in english.

the R is fine (as a french native speaker) but the RR is literally a nightmare so far.
I don't find any difference between the american r and the spanish r ... Can somone tell me the difference plz.. Cuz im really having trouble trying to pronounce it

@@hajerabumaash126 the English r is used at the end of the end of the syllables/after the vowel the syllable in Spanish. That tap is used as the English r. It can blend with d sounds. So moriré is mod-ir-é.
Rr is used at the beginning of a syllable/before the vowel. That's the trilled r. I'm still learning that one.
A thing to note is that the English r that sounds like a w is not in native Spanish. To be clarify there's a video about how R's can sound like either L's or V's ruclips.net/video/ld3A3QCpXd4/видео.html (V's & W's are both made with the lips.) That link is good for explaining English R & lisps about R's in general.

I don't know. To me, this video proves the adage, "Those who can do and those who cannot, teach." 17 minutes on a video with this title and, I'm no where convinced you can even make the sound yourself at all. Then, writing everything in Alienado...backward just give the whole thing a Saturday Night Live quality. It's NONE of what you said. The matter of thrilled 'R' is extremely easy. It's nothing to do with tongue and mouth placement and shape. It's only about the burst of air from diaphragmic breathing. Take in a good breathe, let the tongue flap on the roof of the mouth as it naturally does and, make the video 30 seconds long.
