you need 2 4/8 3/4 ply wood sheets for the machine to run on as one go under the other one is coming under the machine pull the first one out and put it Behind the machine to back up on so it will not sink in the stone good luck

Most cities and towns will classify the shed as permanent if it is on a cement base. Thus it is taxable. This men did a great job considering the conditions. Gravel should have been compacted by renting a machine. Very impressive shed.

suggest compacting the gravel with a rented gasoline powered mechanical vibrating compactor before moving heavy loads on gravel, otherwise gouges will get things out of level. I know it's too late for this project, but for any other people watching this, that is a key element to getting this sort of thing right in the future. And that doesn't really cost much to rent.

I would have refused to put the building on that soft rock until he compacted it with a 1000# compactor. The building will sink and not consistent.

    • @helihoot
      @helihoot  6 лет назад +1

Its not soft rock LOL. This is common practice. 3/4 crushed stone works well for this application. My rock bed is fully enclosed by the timbers which contains the stone. Compacting 3/4 is a waste of time. The guys should have put plywood down. In the end it came out great. Been there now for 6 years and perfect. So why are people so fucking rude?

The owner did not have enough gravel placed to account for the weight and settlement of the shed. Also when it rains the shed is going to sink even more. He need to rethink that shed installation. I hope he had drainage installed. Great looking shed and great delivery and installation.

I am the owner. Did you watch the linked video that shows the preparation pictures? I used a full triaxle load of 3/4 crushed stone. 23 tons. Minimum 8" deep. Deeper on the lower side because I graded a slope in the ground so the water wouldn't pool. Also added a pvc drain at the lowest point. Shed has been there for over 5 years now and barely settled.

You missed your calling, you should be in the obstacle course building business. Did you not realize how low the approach to your "site" was and that they would be using a low trailer? (oh yea, you said: "I thought that it might be a problem" ... " I can put some dirt in there with my front end loader"). Why didn't you already have it reasonably level before they got there? It's not their fault that they had such a hard time getting it set in place, they were trying their damndest, but they were working against a very poorly prepared site.
The reason I was going through and watching videos is because I'm getting a 16 x 32 building. I promise you the people delivering mine will have a much better prepared site.

Not sure why so many people like to take jabs at the owner (me) without before politely asking why. A slab isnt the best thing to sit wood on. The wood draws moisture out of the slab and rots faster than sitting on a bed of stone that is always dry. The other reason I didn't go slab is I can easily relocate it if I choose. Local zoning might make me move it some day since it encroaches into the twp land. Here it is at 7 years old www.getdieselpower.com/gallery/_data/i/upload/2017/06/24/20170624065230-63990f4e-me.jpg

Excellent equipment that can do amazing things. Bonus points for getting it done on such a poorly prepared site.
    Videography. -3

    Best comment during the install.
“Take your time. I want it done right.” 😂
If you (helihoot) had taken the time to compact the gravel and had the “I thought that would be a problem” low spot filled in or had planks available if the low spot is meant to be there for truck loading from that door then the delivery guys would have had the shed delivered and been gone before the gravel was disturbed.

They were hoping they could just back it up and drop it. I think it is up to the homeowner to level the ground before delivery. Seems the owner knew there was going to be a problem and should not have waited until the last min to resolve the problem. I bet the delivery men didn't even get a tip. In the end, Persistence pays off I watched a couple of previous deliveries of Amish sheds and people do use gravel as a foundation, depends on soil type, I guess. We have clay so poor drainage, wouldn't work on our land. Difficult to watch the video, but the comments gave me the best entertainment and laughs I've had in some time.

I did my research. 3/4 stone barely compacts. And even if i did that machine still would have done the same. they screwed up. If they let me add more dirt in the front like I suggested so they could have raised the shed higher they could have backed it the whole way with the truck. I had a backhoe there and dirt but they said no this is fine. Bottom line it's been there now for 8 years with no issues with the base.

Let me give you a word of wise for SAFETY SAKE. PLEASE... Get your mirrors mounted on top of the cab. The way you have them mounted, when running down the highway, if someone in the oncoming traffic ran into your mirror, the mirror bar could (and has happened) slice thru windshield and decapitate occupants or at the very least injure the driver. Very dangerous to have mirrors mounted below occupants like they are. How do I know this you ask? I have been in the mobile home transporting business for 40 years. Toters use to mount mirror bar below windshield, which was more convinent to adjust mirror extension. After a few years and some tragedies they stopped mounting mirror bars this way. Great video and nice job getting load delivered successfully.

Having said that, it may have been an idea to run it through a video editor?
As to the gravel .... you can compact anything ..... bu some are sold to be compacted (there are several different grades of rock mixed in so the smaller ones interlock with the larger ones) and some that are not!
There is only one person who knows the full story of who said what to who and what was both promised and required .... and it isn't me so I will not pass judgement on eather side! I realize this is a 2012 video, but it is a perfect example of why an owner can not video his own project. A large part of the time the camera is not pointed at what it should be focused on; the camera jerks around too much, almost making the viewer seasick. A tripod set up on the back corner would have been a much better idea.

@@barstad-9591 so you think you can compact 3/4" Delaware 57 stone with no dust in it, do you? You think that would've made any difference? Bedding stone will settle, but it takes a long time. On big job sites I've ran huge vibratory roller compactors over 3/4 stone. And afterwards pickup trucks would drive over it and make ruts like that mules little tire did. In smaller trenches where i was laying pipe and using being stone around the pipe I've tried compacting it with a tamp and that was useless. Until i added crusher run that has stone dust in it or select that was the only things i could get to compact. Unless it was ammesite and rolled to compaction. But bedding stone, no you're wasting your time thinking you'll get compaction from tamping it or rolling it. Now people have used 3/4 stone for driveways and after a good long while it will settle and compact if it's constantly driven over. But that's not what this is or was. As for this job, since the delivery guys didn't opt for the homeowner to add some dirt in the gully when they assessed where the building was going, and take him up on his offer. That's on them not him. As for the sinking mule, if they do this job daily i guarantee you this isn't the first time they've encountered 3/4"stone base. And in that event they'd have seen the back smaller tire of the mule make ruts. Not to mention this was a very large heavy building, bigger then most common 12x24 sheds and the ruts they made with the drive tires of the mule were also unacceptable. This man spent a day or more prepping raking grading screeding that stone to be level and on grade. And it was obvious by watching the video if the homeowner didn't grab the rake and relevel those ruts the delivery guys weren't going to, they were trying to continue backing up until the homeowner asked him to slow down and stop to get it right. All humans make periodic mistakes and have brain farts. But that doesn't mean every two finger typist needs to leave negative or derogatory comments to a man who simply uploaded a video that he wanted to take and share on the Web.
