      Thank you so much! Im no genius. I just wanna let people know how AH does it. The genius is the simplicity of the concept Allan uses.

    Amazing breakdown! Thank you soo much for doing this, it is one of Holdsworth’s most emotional passages of music. Would’ve loved to have seen your take on the solo too! Anyway thanks again, now I know how to play these chords I can show off to my friends haha

      Thanks! I really never learn the solos but i try to figure out how AH thinks of them so I can do my own. I have to say the opening 8 measures of the solo has the greatest improvised line of all time!

    Great lesson on the 13th chords and how he built this part of the song- Now that's a chord scale! I already knew how to play this part of the song from the Reaching for the Uncommon Chord book, but I'm glad I stuck around for your analysis. I always find that the best way to sound like Allan is to take his advice from the REH video, pick a weird chord, and make a chord scale out of it. I find some bizarre chords that way. Anyway, cheers!

    Great video! Regarding the sus ♯4 chords, Rick Beato (I'm quite sure you've heard of him or his channel) labels these as lydian chords, e.g. C F♯ G would be C lyd, (C F Gb would be Csus4b5). The idea can also be applied for b2 chords where C Db G would be labeled as C phryg. This kind of deviates from the traditional labeling of chords with just numbers (and sharps / flats for that matter) but I find it very convenient to use, same as naming the quartal chords with a single "Q" only (e.g. C F Bb = CQ). I just thought you might find this useful :-)

    • @TurrigenousOfficial
      @TurrigenousOfficial  5 лет назад +2

      Great comment! I have seen Steve Hunt label Alyd in his charts for maj7#11 type chords. I just watched that video Rick put out about it. I think its a great idea but the only issue I have is the name. To me lydian means 3 7 and #4 and phryg means b3 b7 b2. So those triads can be tricky for modes like Lydian Minor, Phryg b4, Phryg Dom or any other modes that are similar to it. If there was a better name for it i think its great. Fine for short hand including "Q" too

    Incredible work, never thought someone would decode this.
    28:20 you mention there is a recording of this swell section live? What concert was it? Some parts of the Above and Below intro go as far back as 1994.

    • @TurrigenousOfficial
      @TurrigenousOfficial  5 лет назад

      Thank you! I always loved this piece and wanted to really make sure I nailed it as much as I could. I play it frequently. I started to mess up a bit at the end cuz my hand started to hurt from all the repetition haha. The live recording i'm talking about was from Sept 84 at the Bottom Line in NYC. Im sure if you search around online you can probably find it as I did.

      @@TurrigenousOfficial Thank you so much this analysis, I found that concert online after some digging, had no idea there was a recording of this song played live other than the outro section on deluxe Wardenclyffe Tower. I think it is by far his best melodic piece, its so soul crushingly sad and beautiful.

    at 3:49 you say Gmajor but play Ab major. You are doing amazing work. I am on my 5th Holdsworth tune you have covered. I keep wondering do you have perfect pitch? were you just born with great ears? did you develop relative pitch really quick and do you have any recommendations as far as developing the ear? thank you !

    • @TurrigenousOfficial
      @TurrigenousOfficial  4 года назад +1

      Oops! I missed that editing! As long as I played it right haha. I def dont have perfect pitch. My relative pitch is pretty good. But a lot of it is working out a lot of tunes, seeing the same kind of hand logic/chord shapes etc. I think of myself more like a scientist. I do have a very LIGHT version of perfect pitch and I think its called true pitch. Like I can tune my guitar a few cents close to E, but play an E on a piano and I can't tell. I use Nirvanas 'School' in my head to tune haha.

    Congratulations, again, for giving us this incredible work !!
    I think... why you don’t transcribe the final solo ? Its so damn beautiful, and would be a pleasure to see your interpretation. One of the mos beautiful Allan’s solo, for suuure.
    (Or, maybe, if you are selling the tabs/transcription of this song, I’ll buy it for sure)
    Keep rocking, man !!

    • @TurrigenousOfficial
      @TurrigenousOfficial  4 года назад +1

      Thank you! I never found transcribing the solos to be anything meaningful except for understanding how AH interprets what scales those chords come from, or some interesting outside lines. I did reverse engineer what I think AHs lead sheet would look like and playing along with it sounds great!

      You should ask him again, he transcribed like 180 solos, so maybe you have some luck, he is selling the transcriptions, and he did a monumental 5 hour video that all guitarist should check.

    I don't wanna sound like I'm boasting at all cause I'm not and certainty no great musician but I totally get what Allan says I think (or I'm completely misunderstanding!). I kind of always thought of chords this way; for example I never understood the argument "proper music instructors" gave about the m7b5 versus minor 6th chord. To me its the same chord, the notes being inverted doesn't matter to my ears, I hear the same thing. Of course the context its in matters and can give a different overall feel or mood, but the chord at heart (for lack of a better term) is essentially the same.

    Brilliant video and very clear. Actually you were wondering why you kept making errors, maybe it was because unusually for you, the speed you were talking at made me worry you were gonna swallow your tongue! I played the whole video at 0.75 speed, as I was on headphones and I was getting heart palpitations. Hope that did not sound like criticism, just an observation etc. Anyway keep up the fantastic work, which will be of use to upcoming Allan fans for years to come.

      I thought I replied to this haha. Anyway, no offense. You're probably right! My camera can only record about 10 mins at a time (4 gigs) so I try to get in as much as possible. Since this was a LONG video and I had so much to say, I wanted to get through it as quickly as possible. Ill keep this in mind next time! The next video wont be so long at all. In fact, looking at what left I could do, I don't think any one of them will be this long, except Home and one other. Thanks for the comment!
