@@zootallures6470 Thank you! There will be more :). I have maybe about 8 more SynthAxe specific lesson videos I want to do, as well as how it works and some other stuff :).
This video is like everything you didn't know that you needed to know about "Looking Glass", which coincidentally may be the quintessential example of a Holdsworth composition! The level of detail here should satisfy even the nerdiest of the nerdiest. So many things here I never even thought about or noticed before. Thank you!
Thanks for having the patience to sit and watch all of it! Yeah, and imagine my delight when I recorded all this, and realized it was all out of focus XD.
Amazing work! (Again) All the work you put into these videos is very much appreciated. This stuff certainly help open up new doors in the world of music for all us mortals out here
Top as always! Looking Glass is one of my favourite Allan's songs and very nice sounding while performing on piano. Looking forward to see tutorial on Secrets and Eidolon!
As a Holdsworth aficionado you might like to know my friend, who has a really nice guitar and amp collection and is always looking, he bought a vintage Marshall half stack earlier this year here in the Midwest U.S.. When he started cleaning it, a very cleanly stenciled in white 'IOU' was on the right side end. Also, one side of the 4x 12" is scratched up badly. As Allen put his top cabs on their side. It was a total find for my friend, who said he bought the amp with no idea what he'd find, nor did the seller mention anything, or he'd have probably paid a heck of a lot more. He read that Allen had to sell gear to fly back home in the 70's. The amp is completely original, with penciled tech initials and dates inside. There was an added tube for an effects loop, but otherwise all stock with all the original mustard dipped capacitors.
Thank you! I stole that idea from Mike Pachelli (who interestingly enough, interviewed Allan in 1991) from his Beatles lesson videos which are FANTASTIC. Unfortunately, Allan doesn't have as much recorded history as them so I try to add as much as I can. Most of the videos, if not all of them, are going to be very meager because either they weren't played live, or there isn't much record of their live performances or recording.
your videos are always insightful and killer for us Holdsworth freaks! I would love for you to do a interview/discussion with Derryl Gabel and Steve Hunt and just discuss AH music interjected with some guitar, piano and synthaxe playing!!! It would be ALL TIME!
John............... Al is still just so...so...so unorthodox. Glad we were around. I bought Atavachron as soon as it came out... it was like, NOW WHAT? OMG! My Dad was a big ELP fan, from early 70's when I was 5 or 6. So being exposed to that; Keith Emerson...fast forward to '86. Allan synthaxe ALWAYS reminded me of Emerson... that same ferocious soloing. but synth sounds... Like a gift. Mind you we were playing Rock Metal and still doing all that, but I had this side of me that nose dived into Atavachron. It was and still like....where did you get the inspiration to come up with this ELP complex stuff being a guitarist???? LOL, We all know his history. Thanks for explaining the Marimba.... how he recorded exactly would really be cool to know. If you ever contact Jimmy or Chad to interview them, that would be interesting. Thanks for your hard work once again, John😎🥸✌🙏
Well where there's a will there's a way. You have an obvious reputable RUclips channel in your favor, then I reckon it's making a list of questions. It may unlock a lot of ...Secrets..lol@@TurrigenousOfficial
You are something else in a good way playingwise, the fact you have a synthaxe is mental. You know this is the first song i really got into him but the solo that blew me away the most was the 4.15 bradford executive. Have you any lessons on that?
Thank you! I don't but I do have it transcribed. It uses a bunch of different sounds and if I can get those sounds I would consider it. Altho they way it was recorded, Allan had a backing tape that Chad played to. Then I think Allan changed the chords to fit Chad's playing better than did his solo. So there aren't any repeats or anything, just a long singular progression
Brilliant as always John. BTW have you been using the SynthAxe for your own projects? If so, what kind of applications, and how have your fellow band members and audiences been reacting to it??
Thank you!! Our music is a bit too technical so I'd really have to adapt parts of it to it. I'm def not using this live and I have enough to deal with on guitar haha. But on future records I will prob use it for something in the background or even maybe a solo
What gets me -as a bassist- is trying to figure the bass lines and how they relate to AH's chordal work. Looking Glass being my favorite of all AH tracks, the bass line is a mystery to me. Any insights on this would be greatly aprecciated !
@@TurrigenousOfficial I wondered if that is the trick for Bassists playing with Allan. The hard part is figuring out those chords but you have made that easier with your videos .
Thanks! Allan would sometimes dictate what he wanted but often left the bass player to decide what to play which would give the chord a different context
I'd argue it's the other way around with Meshuggah haha. I remember back in the day Bulb posting about Tosin on the old MeshForum in the mid 2000s. But I've told Fredrik I probably learned about Allan thru him
@ilay829 Each section has the tab for each part, and I separate it by 5ths and standard. It's in the chapter titles. You can work it out there 🙂. Also fwiw the solo chords are in standard only. That's how Allan wrote it
Or.... he wrote it during '85 Metal Fatigue tour... Shit he probably got MEGA Inspired and pumped all the tunes out not too long before rehearsals...LOL, another great question for Chad, Jimmy or Gary. Gary is easy to get a hold of here on RUclips, mate.
You are creating history now, demoing the SynthAxe and getting it on film for the future.
It’s like showing the typewriter for the kids of today.
Hahah well it's interesting to me cuz I'm like one of those kids! Last year at this time I'd have no idea about how it really works

There are many masterpeices that AH has composed, yet above them all is Looking Glass.

One of his greatest compositions.
One of his greatest solos!
