@Billy Dorney interesting. I usually don’t need voice commands as I set Waze before I go and put a playlist in tidal (my media controls are on the steering wheel). But I already have the iPhone and it works similarly well to Android auto. I do prefer the software layout of Android auto and how I seem to need to navigate less to accomplish the same, but I am pleased with the iPhone.

Great video. I'm using Android Auto with my Galaxy S10+. I am mainly listening to Pandora or I use Google Maps, still learning all of the cool features.

Great review. To me the key thing about these systems is you are shifting the technology from the car to the phone. Phones are getting updated all the time, both in the OS & the hardware, whereas that almost never happens with car tech. So something like the built-in GPS in a car is going to seem pretty flash when the car is new, but in 5-10 years time is going to be completely out of date.
Switched from Android Auto on s9+ to iPhone 12 with Apple Car Play. I had way too many problems with connectivity on Android Auto and Subaru Ascent. Good review Paul. I have Apple but just as a test, not plugged in or wireless, I opened Apple maps but there’s no microphone icon to tap re voice control. On the other hand Google maps has it!👍🏻😎 Even that’s a plus! Hence now I’m heading off to Bitter Spring NT, not bloody Arizona!🤪🤣😂
Well, you don’t really have the choice. I have an Oppo, so I use Android Auto. The last big update on Android Auto is really good. But, there are still some issues : - You can use only Google Maps ou Waze as a navigation system. Not open to TomTom, Here, Sygic, etc... - You loose GPS Connection in the tunnels - On the Skoda, you can’t use the navigation on the virtual cockpit. On the other car makers, you don’t have the navigation instructions on the head-up display. - No wireless connection with AA. On my Skoda, and probably yours in this video, CarPlay has wireless connection - Not sure, but it looks like very light version of Google Maps or Waze, so you don’t have all the fonctionnalities. Traffic info are strange on Waze. At least here in Switzerland. It could be due to legal restrictions. Really great tutorial ! Regarding the user interface, I’d rather prefer CarPlay.
Google maps is the best navigation software by far, and it's free. So no reason to get a TomTom. In Tunnels, it loses GPS of course, because there are no satellites above. But google maps doesn't crash, it just continues with constant speed. Wireless Connection just drains your battery, it's better if you connect it anyway, so the battery gets charged and you're prevented from using your phone while driving.
Is there a way to view a dashcam such as Garmin mini2 on the touch screen of a vehicle ? I can’t find any info on this. It seems like such an obvious thing to want to do. Thanks for the video very well done !
Please do something on premium cars’ electronically adjustable suspension NOT including air suspension setups. There are so many makes that offer them and I swear to God my 2022 430i coupe supposedly equipped with them running on 19” wheels don’t make a difference at all. Please do a comparison between Audi, Jaguar, BMW, Merc, Volkswagen etc
Has Google fixed the issue that had Android Auto disconnecting every 10 minutes, and potentially forcing your car stereo to reboot? Or is this still a feature in the current version?
Good video and I wonder if this will help solve my problem in my 2022 MG5 i-smart that only communicates in Thai Language which I failed to change to English. The car was newly purchased and used in Bangkok, Thailand and it comes with the infotainment which has a built-in voice command that runs in Thai language only. The local dealer told me they will be working on an update to include English language sometime in the future, but until then, I hope I don't crash into something while trying to mingle with the controls.
I actually use both a Samsung phone and an iPhone, I think Android Auto definitely works a little better, but I like the Home Screen on CarPlay with its map and media controls. Ironically I think Apple Music even works slightly better/cleaner on Android Auto.
Google Map in Android Auto does not use Accelerometer/Compass to show which way the car is pointing. If the device doesn't fix it, you should use the cell phone... a big flaw that should be done! On Apple's map, it's right.
Wish I have the option between CarPlay and Android Auto, but my 2019 Corolla Hatchback only has CarPlay at the moment and Toyota still said nothing about Android Auto, even though all it needs is a firmware update. The Aussie has to pay for the update, but here in the States, we don't even have the option. Booo, Toyota.
You can find the tutorial and firmware download. Here in italy all corolla users on the Facebook group are updating their my19 and can use Android auto.
@@vittogol I am afraid I might brick it. I asked the dealership about it this week and the manager said that toyota did upgrade the 2019 camry with a firmware so hopefully toyota will let them do the corolla soon. Fingers crossed bc I have been waiting for more than a year now.
@@mattspyro I looked at the car I want first and foremost in terms on reliability, mpg, and price. Then, everything else is just minor quality of life. Can I live without android auto, sure. I have been using Google maps on my phone before this car so it's not a big deal. However, having access to the big screen in a more suitable location is definitely better.
Android user here... I like the features it offers but AA sucks big time due to its connectivity issues that so many users have reported all over the internet. Frequent disconnect and reconnecting during a drive is really annoying.
This is dependent on the screen size. We did have this at some point with AA. New version of Android auto will bring this back regardless of screen size. Search for 'A new design for Android auto'

Hey Paul, great review. Well done. I was wondering how your tesla system compares to AA and ACP? I've ordered a Cybertruck and I'm a bit worried about the navigation and other apps/uses here in Australia?
I have a model 3 and the system uses Google maps and for music you can use your Spotify or tidal accounts and it looks just like on your phone for music and maps Only thing that sucks is you can't control anything with Google. 🤷🏾♂️
I own a kia cerato 2017 and from a spotify music POV I prefer Apple car play, when i used Android auto the overall quality was quieter and the whole os would just stop working about 40 minutes into the drive. I had recently upgraded from iPhone 8 to an S21 and I keep the iPhone in my car just to use car play. Keep in mind I never configured it or anything I just used the default settings so the problem might just be on my end.
I have both android and apple, have to admit apple Carplay just looks gorgeous. Android is great for having a lot of different file types including FLAC music files that you can play in the car but the UI and visual experience goes to apple
Apple Maps is good, and getting better, at least in the US. I use both Apple and Google Maps, and neither have failed me for the destinations I have traveled to.

@@CarExpertAus I don’t really use too many tbh, other than general phone calls and message notifications, I mainly just use Google Play Music (now RUclips Music which still a bit rubbish) and Google Maps which works spectacularly well. It also works handfree in my car, so just have to say “hey google” without needing to press voice control buttons. In Android, there is also the “Android Auto for Phone Screens” app which gives you direct access to the AA settings and music etc.
music quality via carplay is better when compared to android auto..plus Siri understands you better when compared to Google Assistant..these are the two reasons why I brought an iPhone
Apple CarPlay FTW! I love that I can fast forward songs whilst driving. Android Auto just skips to the next track. Also Android Auto doesn't doesn't work in my Hyundai (dealer can't work it out either) so there's that too...
@@CarExpertAus I'm not too sure. I have gone as far as restoring my phone back to factory settings and ensuring everything is updated but still no luck. The dealer concluded that my phone is "too new" for the system (I have a 2018 i30) so I'm not really buying that...
@@robertciavarella766 what kind of Hyundai do you have? I used to drive a work car (2017 Santa Fe) and Android Auto performed flawlessly. But... a friend of mine recently bought an Accent and apparently it was only compatible with ACP (she's a Samsung user). I think only the Accent has this issue, pretty sure every other Hyundai works with both AA and ACP. EDIT - just read your post again. Really odd, should work just fine
I hope to see advancements, but all I need is RUclips music and a GPS which is is great on android auto. When I first switched from Apple I was worried bc I never got to try android auto, but it's good.
My brother just started using apple car play and every time he uses it his apple watch stops receiving calls and he has to reset his watch to ever get it to work again. He know others with the same problem. No fix.
I’ve used both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but I’ve settled on CarPlay because I had a lot of issues with Android Auto not starting up and not connecting to my car intermittently. About 1 in 3 times I’d get in my car to drive, connect the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and Android Auto wouldn’t launch. If I tried to manually launch it, it would fail; and the only way to get it to connect was to reboot the phone. With the iPhone 11 Pro Max and CarPlay, a connection failure happens about 1 in 10 times.
AA is just about to update its system in the next few weeks, plus has a 3rd party creation beta tool being rolled out to app creators in the next few months. I will be very interested to see what the app creators produce as there is a huge amount of options that AA could use to make it an even better system.
Hi from London England. I really enjoyed your video which I watched today. I found it very informative. I have an Android phone LG G6 mobile phone and I'm now planning to buy an infotainment system for my car. So I really would like to know the difference between Android auto and Mirrorlink since I am not sure which would best suit my needs since I I know very little abou either of them. Is that something you could do a video on or maybe send me some information. Thank you so much.
There's always been a knock on Apple Maps that it's just not as good as the well-established Google Maps. Thing is though, that for the most part Apple Maps will sort you out and it's often been easier to just use the default option but I am glad that they've allowed us to set other apps as the default option now. Obviously whether you use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay will just come down to what smartphone you use but it was good to see the differences ;)
I was using AA in my Skoda Karoq......But my new S21 Ultra dies bigtime on connection! I have no idea why, just cycles connection over and over. Works fine on my old phone!
All of my friends use Google Maps on their iPhones. It doesn't mean Android is better than Apple, it simply means Google Maps is the best and not to many people would argue with that.
I have a mk8 Fiesta and the nav is.... not as good as Google maps (I'm on Android). That's being polite. Paul, does Waze chomp thru data usage cos it's what's put me off trying it?

Good review Paul. I have Apple but just as a test, not plugged in or wireless, I opened Apple maps but there’s no microphone icon to tap re voice control. On the other hand Google maps has it!👍🏻😎 Even that’s a plus! Hence now I’m heading off to Bitter Spring NT, not bloody Arizona!🤪🤣😂
Ha ha, enjoy the road trip!
Well, you don’t really have the choice. I have an Oppo, so I use Android Auto. The last big update on Android Auto is really good. But, there are still some issues :
- You can use only Google Maps ou Waze as a navigation system. Not open to TomTom, Here, Sygic, etc...
- You loose GPS Connection in the tunnels
- On the Skoda, you can’t use the navigation on the virtual cockpit. On the other car makers, you don’t have the navigation instructions on the head-up display.
- No wireless connection with AA. On my Skoda, and probably yours in this video, CarPlay has wireless connection
- Not sure, but it looks like very light version of Google Maps or Waze, so you don’t have all the fonctionnalities.
I use Apple CarPlay in my VW. For navigation I prefer Waze as I feel it has better navigation skills than google maps or Apple maps.
I really wonder why youtube aint allowed on either but zoom is like do they expect people to be having online meetings on the wheel?
Very good point!
Great review. I have a Samsung s20 I am having trouble find a good Wireless adaptor. Can you help.
😪
You can find the tutorial and firmware download. Here in italy all corolla users on the Facebook group are updating their my19 and can use Android auto.
Crazy, but I literally avoided toyota when looking for my new car bc of the lack of AA
Thanks for the feedback! Any idea what causes those issues?
@@CarExpertAus I'm still trying to figure it out... Will try different cables too and also some are pointing towards software bug in the latest patch.
I wish android has the home screen like carplay does with the music and maps in the same screen
This is dependent on the screen size. We did have this at some point with AA. New version of Android auto will bring this back regardless of screen size.
Search for 'A new design for Android auto'
I was really hoping on you showing us wireless android auto
ye, is it good?
@@dragospahontu I don't know, still haven't seen it 😂
@@Robbe1984 i have it on my Passat. It's amazing!!!!
Can't go back to a car without it now.
You connect with a wire first, after it connects with bluetooth.
@@dragospahontu I have android auto in my Kia optima but I want it to be wireless. Seems like it sadly won't happen until I buy a newer car
@@Robbe1984 yeah, the Passat was one of the first to receive it.
Hey Paul, great review. Well done. I was wondering how your tesla system compares to AA and ACP? I've ordered a Cybertruck and I'm a bit worried about the navigation and other apps/uses here in Australia?
I have a model 3 and the system uses Google maps and for music you can use your Spotify or tidal accounts and it looks just like on your phone for music and maps
Only thing that sucks is you can't control anything with Google.
Keep in mind I never configured it or anything I just used the default settings so the problem might just be on my end.
please do an update for 2022! would love to see it
I have both android and apple, have to admit apple Carplay just looks gorgeous. Android is great for having a lot of different file types including FLAC music files that you can play in the car but the UI and visual experience goes to apple
Apple Maps is good, and getting better, at least in the US. I use both Apple and Google Maps, and neither have failed me for the destinations I have traveled to.
super-duper useful video thanks
0:07 - lol I was going to ask if you're related to Ivan Maric or not, but this could be your old man's name. Are you related to Ivan Maric the ex-Richmond player?
Love my Android Auto, trying to deal with Volkswagen navigation does my head in.
Any favourite apps?
@@CarExpertAus I don’t really use too many tbh, other than general phone calls and message notifications, I mainly just use Google Play Music (now RUclips Music which still a bit rubbish) and Google Maps which works spectacularly well. It also works handfree in my car, so just have to say “hey google” without needing to press voice control buttons.
In Android, there is also the “Android Auto for Phone Screens” app which gives you direct access to the AA settings and music etc.
the VW nav is amazig on holiday in another country and very accurate.
Carplay looks beautiful.
Great review
Thanks!
Thanks, for this comprehensive / informative video
music quality via carplay is better when compared to android auto..plus Siri understands you better when compared to Google Assistant..these are the two reasons why I brought an iPhone
really? Siri never understands me, google assistant understands all that i say. Interesting
Well timed for me. Thinking about switching to iPhone from Android.
👏👏 The S20+ has been fun to play with. It’s way lighter than my Pro Max too.
I’m thinking of going the other way. iPhone to Android.
@@campbellreither550 do it, I've been on the dark side for years but wifey joined recently, hasn't looked back
@@andrewmihaleff sounds good. I just find iPhone so boring!!!
Apple CarPlay FTW! I love that I can fast forward songs whilst driving. Android Auto just skips to the next track. Also Android Auto doesn't doesn't work in my Hyundai (dealer can't work it out either) so there's that too...
Interesting! Is it a hardware or software issue with the Hyundai?
@@CarExpertAus I'm not too sure. I have gone as far as restoring my phone back to factory settings and ensuring everything is updated but still no luck. It connects for a few seconds and then a message pops up saying "phone is not responding".
No fix.
Interesting - does he have the do not disturb setting enabled by any chance?
if you're in the car, i think apple sets the car as priority over the watch. Why exaclty is that a problem?
I’ve used both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but I’ve settled on CarPlay because I had a lot of issues with Android Auto not starting up and not connecting to my car intermittently. About 1 in 3 times I’d get in my car to drive, connect the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, and Android Auto wouldn’t launch. If I tried to manually launch it, it would fail; and the only way to get it to connect was to reboot the phone. With the iPhone 11 Pro Max and CarPlay, a connection failure happens about 1 in 10 times.
Thanks for the feedback! Which car is that in, @Samgab?
@@CarExpertAus That was in a 2019 Suzuki Swift Sport.
AA is just about to update its system in the next few weeks, plus has a 3rd party creation beta tool being rolled out to app creators in the next few months. I will be very interested to see what the app creators produce as there is a huge amount of options that AA could use to make it an even better system.
I have an iPhone so I use (and like) CarPlay, however I dislike (like many) the information (or lack there of) in Apple Maps.
Not sure if you mentioned this. If using an Android phone it needs to have V.10 of Android or better.
Google maps with satellite view is still the preferred for me but past that I prefer CarPlay
All of my friends use Google Maps on their iPhones. It doesn't mean Android is better than Apple, it simply means Google Maps is the best and not to many people would argue with that.
sadly google maps on iphone has very much restricted features. It's much more advanced on android
Deleting Apple Maps in the iPhone makes it more convenient to just use Google Maps, not kidding.
Thanks for that tip!
I have a mk8 Fiesta and the nav is.... not as good as Google maps (I'm on Android). That's being polite. Paul, does Waze chomp thru data usage cos it's what's put me off trying it?
Android auto has been very buggy of late love my galaxy fold 2 but car play seems mode polished
I’ve found the same CarPlay is pretty easy to use and feels smoother in terms of its operation.
