I would have to put it down to experience. When a horse is obviously afraid, and is running, to suddenly stop and face you, and not be taking steps back as you are approaching with a flag, it becomes a split second decision in their mind to go forward and get rid of the pressure. Think of a lion approaching her after a long run from it. She is scared, but will attack as a last resort. I saw her take a mini step back with one hind in preparation for pushing forwards.
