  • Eric Burdon is an English singer-songwriter and actor. He was previously the vocalist of rock band The Animals and funk band War. He is regarded as one of the British Invasion's most distinct singers with his deep, powerful blues-rock voice. He is also known for his aggressive stage performances.
    The Animals are an English rhythm and blues and rock band, formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in the early 1960s. The band moved to London upon finding fame in 1964. The Animals were known for their gritty, bluesy sound and deep-voiced frontman Eric Burdon, as exemplified by their signature song and transatlantic No. 1 hit single, "House of the Rising Sun", as well as by hits such as "We Gotta Get Out of This Place", "It's My Life", "I'm Crying" and "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". The band balanced tough, rock-edged pop singles against rhythm and blues-orientated album material and were part of the British Invasion of the US.
    The Animals underwent numerous personnel changes in the mid-1960s and suffered from poor business management. Under the name Eric Burdon and the Animals, the much-changed act moved to California and achieved commercial success as a psychedelic and hard rock band with hits like "San Franciscan Nights", "When I Was Young" and "Sky Pilot", before disbanding at the end of the decade. Altogether, the group had ten Top Twenty hits in both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100.
    The original lineup of Burdon, Alan Price, Chas Chandler, Hilton Valentine and John Steel reunited for a one off benefit concert in Newcastle in 1968. They later had brief comebacks in 1975 and 1983. There have been several partial regroupings of the original era members since then under various names. The Animals were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

      @@jeffchristianson-ziebell7727 Does sexual orientation have anything to do with it? Big-name rock artists are predominantly male and are admired by both sexes regardless of the orientation of the fans. It's true many women might be enamored by the sexual attractiveness of some male celebs like Burdon. Some gay/bi men might follow hot male celebs for the same reasons. Burdon isn't a man to want to boot out of bed easily considering his charm. Yes, he's got a big, deep voice for such a short fellow.

      When I was in my mid-teens, I always thought of Burdon as bringing a kind of maturity to a scene and a sound that validated the world for me. All that from just listening to Animals records, which I wore out constantly. It's all stamped accurately by interviews such as this one.
      That comment about his hometown and how they were the "n" of the working class. I think any working class kid back then sensed that. And the bit about Jimmy Witherspoon getting constantly ripped off.
      Burdon was (and is) a very class act, all the way through his life.

I was playing with Jimmy Witherspoon at the time. He asked me what I wanted to play, I said "See See Rider," & off we went! Scratch one off the bucket list! @Plumcrazy Preston I think Adelaide, Australia, via Glasgow might be able to throw up a contender. Born James Swan - loved by legions as Jimmy Barnes. He has a single that charted in the US called "Working Class Man"! Do you know it? He also sings "Shipping Steel". /Similar to Eric, Jimmy's young parents were poor, from grimy Glasgow, Scotland. They emigrated to another rough, working class area in Adelaide, called Port Elizabeth. Jimmy's career took off around 1975-76 with the Australian band Cold Chisel. They were late teens-twenty when the four band members left in a van for Sydney. I think Jimmy, in his prime, would have duetted brilliantly with Eric Burdon. Jimmy and Michael Hutchence did a chart breaking cover of "Gonna Have Some Good Times Tonight". Worth looking up on YT if you don't know it.

      @@karengayehammat4199 I think the google translate mucked it up. "La voix" = a feminine noun, "the voice". "It (the voice) is quite simply unique". I think the feminine "Elle" could be another way of saying "C'est", "It is". Guessing a bit - but it does look like how a French person would comment. Colloquially?

    What an incredible voice. What an incredible time for music. American Black music and the blues swept over England in the 60s and, man, did they learn the best! Phil Collins speaks of going to listen to Led Zeppelin in bars before they became famous and his love of R&B. England produced the best bands. Amazing.

    • @tomcarl8021
      @tomcarl8021 2 года назад +5

      Black American music did not sweep Britain in the sixties. That's a myth. It appears that it did because the great British musicians fell in love with it, but the population as a whole did not. Vice President of Atlantic Records, Jerry Wexler, crunched the numbers and said so. He said throughout the sixties, Black music sold very little in Britain. How did he know that? Because that was his job. He was a record executive. And a record executive for the greatest Black music label in history.

    • @comealongcomealong4480
      @comealongcomealong4480 Год назад +1

      @@tomcarl8021 The British music scene in the early 60s would have been all about radio airplay, selling singles and live performances. That audience would mostly not have known or had access to the original recordings of black American artists. But I think many of their songs became UK hits as Covers. I imagine Top of the Pops artists covered Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, and some of the early Motown hits. The waves of influences before the Internet - SO interesting. Eric mentioned the exchange of ideas and fashions at seaports. Liverpool too being a historically vibrant, multi-ethnic, seaport city. (And of course, birthplace of the Beatles.)

      @@tomcarl8021 I was attempting to agree with your comment. Suggesting that the original versions of hit songs by black Americans were not played in England in the early 60s. But their songs were learned and performed by English bands - or plagiarised! And many probably became radio and chart hits that way.
