I learned it in first grade and just carried it with me like a big secret every year. The other classes could never figure it out. It's to show respect.(it's not just a hey bro thing) It's such a respect thing that there are different versions of Hyung that can show if the person is speaking with a bio sibling(add "chin" or "woori" before Hyung), a cousin(sa-chon Hyung), a close friend or someone who just told you to call them Hyung(hyung-nim). Hyung-nim is used in several different ways, including: - you really respect him - you meet him for the first time and they tell you to speak casually and you want to behave in a friendly but respectful way. im literally learning the language from my korean family members right now and one of the first things they taught me were honorifics and the importance of formal & informal speech. Terms are important. You would never just say the person's name.If the guy didn't say Hyung he would use "ah" after the name or "ssi" or "Nim" Edit: however, I wasn't saying that it meant "actual brother" in this context. What makes episode 6 more heartbreaking is that ali was calling out "HYUNG" at the end when he was looking for SANG-WOO.
in korea HYUNG means Big Brother (used when a younger boy/man is referring or addressing a close older male friend or an actual older brother) it didnt show it in the subs but ali was actually yelling out "HYUNG" & " SANG-WOO HYUNG" which translates to "BROTHER/OLDER BROTHER" & "BROTHER SANG-WOO" 😭😭😭😭

@@a.j.1819 (I'm letting you know that I'm not being disrespect but it's hard to express my tone though typing 🤷🏾♀️) idk If you're korean or speak korean but I'm speaking from learning from family and according to my uncle whose from korea and my cousin's husband whose korean it's literally a form of respect/honorifics/formal & informal speech. It's to show respect.(it's not just a hey bro thing) It's such a respect thing that there are different versions of Hyung that can show if the person is speaking with a bio sibling(add "chin" or "woori" before Hyung), a cousin(sa-chon Hyung), a close friend or someone who just told you to call them Hyung(hyung-nim).
Hyung-nim is used in several different ways, including:
- you really respect him
- you meet him for the first time and they tell you to speak casually and you want to behave in a friendly but respectful way.
im literally learning the language from my korean family members right now and one of the first things they taught me were honorifics and the importance of formal & informal speech.
Terms are important. You would never just say the person's name.If the guy didn't say Hyung he would use "ah" after the name or "ssi" or "Nim"
Edit: however, I wasn't saying that it meant "actual brother" in this context. When I put the actual brother part in the original comment I was showing that it had other meanings or more serious meanings depending on who is being talked to and the situation.

I never said anything you said was incorrect, just that it’s not as sentimental as the English word “Brother” and as a lot of you are making it seem. There was literally nothing else he could have called him that would fit or make sense, especially since Sangwoo himself told him to refer to him as “Hyung”. He could have called out his full name but again that wouldn’t make sense because A) they were already closer than that and B) Ali isn’t fluent in Korean so maybe he doesn’t even know that’s an option (Remember in the beginning he just called everyone around him “sir”)
