      Well for what it’s worth I use them in live and studio performance. A montage 7 vs my own junior version. There’s not a discernible enough difference to matter at all. For the PP and role I use it for (non-primary) the money saved is best invested elsewhere. Weight is a key consideration on a satellite.

    At the time of my post, I'm about 5:30 into the video. I cannot tell that much difference between the two to spend the huge gap in cost for the Montage. I had a Motif ES7 prior to my house fire earlier this year and my entire studio was destroyed. So I've been replacing gear over the last few months and one thing in particular I was looking at was getting a Montage since the Motif was no longer available. But honestly after viewing this video, I think I'm going with a MODX-7. Now I would prefer balanced outs but it's not the crucial for me. As usual, thanks for a REAL LIFE look at these keyboards. You were THOROUGH enough for me!!!

    Good job on the comparison bro...I feel they are close enough to each other. I’m definitely getting a MODX6...and I’ll run it through some analog outboard to get some extra drive / depth that the PAC might be adding to the Montage. Overall I think the MODX sounds great and almost the same as the Montage. Sometimes it’s hard to tell them apart. Keep up the good work!

    • @SoundsAndGear

      I totally agree, with the difference in price you can even get a dedicated outboard unit, as long as someone is ok with the keyed I think they will be fine. I prefer the feel of the keyboard on the Montage personally but it is hard to front on what you get in the MODX package.

    I frequency analyzed your performance with high end Sony headphones and a meter and the difference is so miniscule there really is no difference that the ear can decipher. Maybe the slight difference is that the Montage has after-touch were as the MODX has standard touch when physically hammering the keys. The performance sound play is internal and identical. Fuji apple or mcintosh apple? Thanks great demo!

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching, difference is very small, probably more due to the keybed response/interaction than anything.

  • @NatLifeSounds
    @NatLifeSounds 5 лет назад +2

    guys, for all who look for the difference between this synth's..got it from Yamaha's
    "MONTAGE features professional balanced outputs with "Pure Analog Circuit" (PAC). PAC improves the quality of signal after being converted to analog from digital for clear harmonic reproduction and even frequency response. The result is an output capable of reproducing MONTAGE's internal content expressively with power and clarity."
    so it means pretty much i think to louder the price...reason = max quality of the sound. So if you important in it, then Montage your way, if no or havnt a possibility to get Montage, go for MODX and use some saturation fx's from a top software to get a same or maybe more rich harmonics.

    • @NatLifeSounds
      @NatLifeSounds 5 лет назад

      also some more from their forum:
      "Yamaha's PAC is more accurate: It doesn't turn down the treble or use a graphic equalizer. The slight jaggedness of the initial conversion (from digital stream to analog waveform) is massaged by their output stage to interpolate any unwanted/unintentional micro splinters of the wave to a smooth wave surface, without simply filtering out signals higher than, say, 5 kHz. So you still retain high frequencies, but without unintended harshness."

    The difference I hear is in the "ambiance" or sound fx (like reverb). The Montage sounds a bit cleaner and more realistic. I almost want to say that (strictly in comparison) the MODX has some digital artifacting present.
    This seems to be most noticeable as the sound decays / at the tail length of the sound. As others have mentioned this may be due to the quality of DA converters, or some other DSP signal processing component(s).

    Thank you for this video. I really think the Montage is great for studio and the eight sliders make it great for stage. My MODX 8 only has four sliders. Playing live, and having multiple songs, I don't want to push part, and then select or push this and then that. I just want to fade in organ or fade out sax or fade in, etc. The MODX 8 has enough space for me to put a Roland JD-Xi on the right side of the keyboard, (elevated slightly). Also, playing outdoors, I've come across heavy condensation. It jeopardizes my MODX, but if a short happens it would be better on a 2k instrument than a 4k instrument. I also have a Yamaha PSR E463, a student grade keyboard for under $500 that eyes closed, same room, same speakers, sounds like the MODX. To clarify, only certain aspects, like the drums and some of the strings and pads use, if not the same engine, one you can't hear a difference in. I agree with you that having a visual reference help discern the audio signal peaks, strengths and whatnot, but the bottom line is how does it sound.

  • @theaudioeng
    @theaudioeng 6 лет назад +5

    Montage is clearly a higher fidelity output (as expected at twice as much!). Putting aside the lesser quality keybed of the MODX6/7/8, it'll be simply the DAC's soldered in as mentioned by Yamaha - like with all the pro features of the Montage ... you get what you pay for, right? I've got the MODX6 but use my GEM S3 Turbo 76-key as master (has Poly AT which the MODX range responds too, though not S3's release velocity :/ ). So effectively, I've bought an expensive 'desktop' synth/controller!! :)

    Well, as with most lower-end synth models they offer the most of the character of the flagship and at stage volume 'who cares'. As long as it resembles its bigger brother it won't drive you crazy and there's so many instruments happening in a full band situation most people just won't care about the difference.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  5 лет назад +1

      That will definitely be the way many people look at it, MODX is a great board!

  • @digitaldiezel5870
    @digitaldiezel5870 6 лет назад +2

    I think in the studio, recording audio clips, the difference is negligible, but if you are playing on stage or you play very complex recordings live you may want the Montage. Other than that, polyphony would only become an issue if a person tried to midi up 8 channels and play them all back at the same time. I'd just record audio clips into a DAW. And I don't really play the keys, I would just be sending midi into the board like a sound module. (side note: check the master EQ on both boards)

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  6 лет назад

      Yeah I hear ya, I've used both in the studio simply recording audio and both get the job done. I do like actually playing on the Montage more, and in isolation you can hear a slight difference on some sounds, but in the mix with other sounds and audio it's not a huge deal at all. I haven't even come close to hitting the polyphony limit, I don't play that many notes at once, I guess if I was sequencing it or had a super stacked sound it could be possible but for the most users the engines are the same.

  • @followyourpassion8378
    @followyourpassion8378 3 года назад +2

    Great comparison! Just a few thoughts regarding the missing velocity layer. Is it possible that you are just (involuntarily) putting more weight into your strokes on the Montage, because for the MODX you have to reach up? Are the velocity curves set to the same value (normal, soft, ...) on both units? Over the years, I often had problems reaching velocity values over 100 with Yamaha keyboards, when triggering external gear.

    • @SoundsAndGear

      Thanks for watching. The keybeds are different and respond differently, I'm not playing any differently on them.The response can be adjusted or it can be played from a different keyboard but that does add to the difference in response overall.

      I'm switching from Modx6 to Montage 7 because its very hard to play things, especially pianos and Electric Pianos, with any kind of dynamic control on the MODX 6/7 keybeds. Even after changing the velocity settings. If you're more of a synth player it probably won't bother you so much but if the pianos and EPs are important it's more of a serious consideration and I'd say go with a MODX8 or Montage.

    I have used cheap apple headphones to listen to this video. But even so I can tell the difference. I like very much my MODX6 and it sounds great for me. I only have been noticed that is almost imposible to reach velocity from 125 to 127. I figured it out by programming a piano library for MONTAGE / MODX. This little velocity issue it makes MODX sound weaker than the MONTAGE in this video, IMHO. Because it seems that at high velocity is where pianos and some synths open up a lot, and have greater depth and strength.

    Definitely a difference. I have the modx6 and hated it after feeling the keys. Did not sound like the modx8 which I played at the store. Same engine, different output stages (converters and circuit topology, components, power supply for output stage) - just like 2 different soundcards or mic preamps (the cheaper is less 3D and less deep, less warm). I suspect the Montage upsamples (SRC) the audio data before output (and therefore accepts rates up to 192kHz while the MODX does not). Could be the FM engine works internally at a higher sampling rate then the outputs of the MODX supports and is not correctly filtered before the output stage (as you can hear aliasing in some other comparison video Montage vs MODX at min 1.30 - FM high register).

    Ok, everything else being equal as well... so how about testing them with a "neutral" controller (weighted or semi weighted or even both). In fact you could trigger the Montage from the MODX and visa versa to compare them. I would have to think that the price differential would account for a lot of difference in actual keyboard the triggering, although I could be wrong. If so this difference in the keyboard quality itself would skew any comparison. Balanced vs unbalanced outputs can be mostly equalized as you did in the first comparison. In a live situation or even a studio mix, I can't believe the difference would be significantly discernable but I am curios now, based on your concluding observations. I'm thinking about one of these myself for my setup.

    • @SoundsAndGear
      @SoundsAndGear  5 лет назад

      Thanks for watching! Yeah, that's not something I would do (play both from another keyboard) as my point was to compare how they each sounded based on what comes with each. I definitely think the keybed plays a part in the response, I'm sure you can get better interaction from a higher quality keybed with the MODX in terms of responsiveness, but I think for live use, or even studio use, if it is mainly the sound engine you're after many will enjoy the MODX. It's not an exact 1 to 1 experience and having both next to each other I could hear slight differences in certain areas but it is still a powerful piece in my opinion. Best advice I can give is if you have a chance to play one for yourself do it. If not, most places have a 30 day return policy for you to test it out as well.

That said, I would buy the MODX8, as I prefer a weighted keyboard, and I've read a few reviews that say the Montage keyboard is better, but if the difference in the keyboards is as minimal as the difference in the sounds, then I don't see the point of buying the Montage over the MODX.
