Cool build. Cool looking wood. And cool music, it had a Lion King feel. Awesome idea with the 2x4s to make that carved out piece for the barrel.

Thank you! Woodworking is one of those things you continue building on. It's personal and sometimes the best teacher is watching someone else's experiences.

I had someone tell me I needed to make toothpicks to go with it. How about how to make flavored toothpicks?

When you glued the inner lid to the outer... Is there a reason you crossed the grain instead of matching the grain? ❤🌅🌵

Hey! Excellent observation! Layers of plywood are generally stacked like that to contain warping. It’s a good practice to use when you’re face gluing boards.
You’re the first to notice that. 👍

Beautiful dispenser, well crafted and handy.
But unsealed spalted wood in contact with something that goes in your mouth? I would have sealed the inside with a food safe finish, or not used spalted wood. Some spalt fungi are toxic. And breathing the fine dust can get into your lungs unless you use a respirator or mask, even with good dust control. I love spalt for non-food projects, but a toothpick from that dispenser would not go in my mouth.

Valerie, thank you for your kind words. I don’t want to delve into the debate of whether spalted wood is safe or unsafe, as I’ve found little more than speculation at this point in the last 20 years of searching (no controlled scientific research). I think there are misconceptions between black molds-which are very toxic-and common safe molds (some people actually eat a fungus called mushrooms 🤮), but the wood I made it from was dry and was sealed.
Honestly, I would be more concerned with other surface dwelling bacterial diseases unrelated to wood than the actual spalted fungus which is why I seal anything I do choose to put near food.
Besides all that, the dispenser isn’t used and I honestly can’t remember the last time it was ever used.
Thank you very much for your concern and I’m grateful you enjoyed the project!

Make Things Guess you could check with Dr. (Seri) Robinson (Corvallis, Or) as to which spalts are toxic. But if the wood was sealed inside and out, then there should not be a problem. Did not see you put finish on the inside, so my brain was envisioning those nice wood toothpicks also becoming spalted. Not an appetizing thought! But a nice project either way!

Thank you Valerie! Trust me, I’m a germaphobe...I cover everything in some kind of sealant before it enters the house!
