It's 60 years later. the screenplay is brilliant and hysterical, the acting is fantastic, and it shows us of when the US existed in a different world, a Cold War between the US and USSR. Wonderful to watch.
Cagney tossing the "crummy" cigar into an offstage toilet then flushing it away made theater audiences howl with laughter when it appeared in 1961 -- back when bathrooms & toilets were never shown in films or anywhere else in mainstream pop culture.
Thank you for posting, have seen most Wilder Films and this one was amazing...much social commentary still funny 60 years later! I wonder if this type of film could even be produced in this day and age???? What do you viewers think??? Thanks again for posting the film.
It' s a very underrated comedy by the genius Billy Wilder. It failed in fermany because of the Berlin wall that was just build during the filming. So they had to switch from Berlin to Munich. Today it' s a must see for every lover of good comedies and beside "Some like it hot, The Fortune Cookie and Front page news" my favorite.
@@lesterpaul9657 The Berlin Gate appears -- the Russian guard smashes a bottle of Coke -- because he doesn't have a bottle opener -- and guzzles it down like vodka.
This movie was released in 1961, only a few months after the Berlin wall was built. It says they even had to remake some of the scenes in the studio, because parts of the city were no longer accessable. The release of the movie happened to be a bad point of time: Nobody, especially the Berliners, who were separated then, could laugh about it. But nevertheless it's a brillant movie, and decades later in the 80's it had a huge revival and got showed a lot in the cinemas. I was born in the 90's and I am happy that the cold war era now is history. A great movie that reminds me a lot about the special past of my city ❤️
Yes, that's true! A german paper wrote: " What breaks our heart, Billy Wilder sees as funny " when the movie premiered in West-Berlin in december 1961.
- This is a pretty crummy cigar - it's OK, we send Cuba pretty crummy rockets ! Mouahahha ! Pure Wilder (and I.A.L Diamond, with a touch of Lubitsch, of course ;)
What always impressed me is English was not the first language of either Wilder or Diamond, yet they had an uncanny knack for writing snappy dialogue and an ear for American slang and "patter."
It's 2022, and replying in a time when the Kremlin has just launched "CoolCola", "Street" and "Fancy" to replace Coca Cola, Sprite and Fanta. Somehow, I can't help thinking Billy Wilder would be amused with this.
It's 60 years ahead of its time. Holy smokes what a great movie!!

Except the toilet scene in Psycho the year before...that startled audiences as much the mess " Mother" had made for Norman Bates to clean up!
I watched the whole it's a pure gem 💎
I know Cagney did not like making this movie, but I believe it is one of my most favorite comedies. A true gem.
Great movie and James Cagney is great actor
The clock playing Yankee Doodle Dandy is a nice touch, since Cagney starred in that movie in 1942.
This is the best comedy movie ever made. Period.

I have the whole! It is the best ever "cold war" comedy! Este o versiune grozavă „actualizată” a comediei originale.
Tibor Mészáros lucky
You should see Dr Strangelove
@@dragoraddrakce7154 Dr Strangelove is another great movie, but in my opinion this is even better
@@dragoraddrakce7154 Another favorite...

One of the funniest movies of all time.
It's not especially funny
I was surprised to learn this is one of Martin Scorcese's favorite films.
I'm not surprised, it's a classic that is widely overlooked.

It's General Burkhalter from Hogan's Heroes.

Is "Mr. McNamara" a reference to the Secretary of Defence?
...it's plausible.
The script hovers somewhere in between the fog of the Marx Brothers and The Simpsons, but it's brilliant
Where is the film in full? Thanks . Amazing film.
I am from Pinsk 😂
I need this clock🤣🤣🤣
