Because with the exception of the 2nd Amendment, nothing else that you mentioned is a God-given right. Voting is a right, not a privilege. But do you want to deal with the consequences of not having an ID if you get legally stop by the cop as a pedestrian breaking a ordnance or law that gives them the legal right to detain you because they cannot probably ticket you. Go try and get a pistol permit in NYC when they tell you it is not your right its our right to grant you one or to not grant you one. Based on there record they do not grant pistol permits. Gerrymandering is geographical.... nobody is forcing any race to live in certain locations or to vote for certain candidates (their choices of where to live and how to vote may affect lines being decided... but it's not magically just happening based on race)

@MrBgklug you're being obtuse. Gerrymandering occurs when, after the census, the party in power of a state redraws the district lines based off of demographic changes. Read that sentence again. The lines are based off of demographics, namely total population, but _lots_ of other factors are taken into account including race, gender, age, culture, and so on, in an attempt to reflect congruent population groups. It is totally legal to do it because the whole reason you redraw the lines is to reflect the voter base in your state with proportional chunks, and distribute the proper amount of congressional seats to each state due to inter-state fluctuations in population. This however is flaunted a lot, and certain cities and neighborhoods are cut up to diminish their congressional voting power, by drawing them into bigger chunks where they will always be outnumbered. I support voter ID laws but gerrymandering is a massive problem for both parties, because whatever party is in power after the census gets free reign, and it takes a court battle to stop it, like what happened in PA a couple years ago. Racism _is_ a very real factor that went into some of current district lines in places all over the country. Not everywhere, but it's happened, and remains a problem in some places. And _a lot_ of people cannot afford to move. I always wonder if the people who say "just move" have ever done that. I have over a dozen times in my life and it costs thousands of dollars to relocate, and a lot of people simply can't make enough money where they are stuck. Between hauling stuff, paying first/last/deposit on an apartment, supporting yourself while you don't have income during the move and potentially finding a new job, it adds up fast, and most low wage earners literally will never be able to save that, or at least in a reasonable amount of time to, as you imply people should do, flee redistricting and gerrymandering.

I issue vouchers to people who need our Catholic Parish Outreach. We require each person to present a picture I'D. Many of our clients are African-American. Everyone has an ID. It is racist to say they aren't capable of getting one. And in our state they are free of charge. Someone needs to educate those mushheads. They insult AA.

In France there are only two forms of id : your id card and your passport . In order to vote you need to show your id card . I've never heard of anyone saying that this was discrimination nor have I ever met a french citizen who doesn't have ID .

I am not talking about some states. I am talking about NYC. And in NYC there are so many laws on the books that a pedestrian can be ticketed and that would require a ID to be shown to the cops.
My statement is directed at video. In poor neighborhoods of NYC cops have been known to use these tactics. My opinion is it has nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with economics.

@K There may not be any law on the books that require you to carry a ID. But do you want to deal with the consequences of not having an ID if you get legally stop by the cop as a pedestrian breaking a ordnance or law that gives them the legal right to detain you because they cannot probably ticket you. I know I don't. So I carry ID.
The Supreme court has said it is your right to have a gun in your home. Go try and get a pistol permit in NYC when they tell you it is not your right its our right to grant you one or to not grant you one.

Voter ID laws don’t suppress the black vote. That’s gerrymandering’s job.
Gerrymandering is geographical.... nobody is forcing any race to live in certain locations or to vote for certain candidates (their choices of where to live and how to vote may affect lines being decided... but it's not magically just happening based on race)
Not looking to argue, I’m genuinely interested in the topic. Most states are not using independent commission to handle redistricting. Are you suggesting it only effects voters in states with Republican legislatures?
@MrBgklug you're being obtuse. Gerrymandering occurs when, after the census, the party in power of a state redraws the district lines based off of demographic changes.
Read that sentence again. The lines are based off of demographics, namely total population, but _lots_ of other factors are taken into account including race, gender, age, culture, and so on, in an attempt to reflect congruent population groups. It is totally legal to do it because the whole reason you redraw the lines is to reflect the voter base in your state with proportional chunks, and distribute the proper amount of congressional seats to each state due to inter-state fluctuations in population. This however is flaunted a lot, and certain cities and neighborhoods are cut up to diminish their congressional voting power, by drawing them into bigger chunks where they will always be outnumbered.
I support voter ID laws but gerrymandering is a massive problem for both parties, because whatever party is in power after the census gets free reign, and it takes a court battle to stop it, like what happened in PA a couple years ago. Racism _is_ a very real factor that went into some of current district lines in places all over the country.
Not everywhere, but it's happened, and remains a problem in some places. And _a lot_ of people cannot afford to move. I always wonder if the people who say "just move" have ever done that. I have over a dozen times in my life and it costs thousands of dollars to relocate, and a lot of people simply can't make enough money where they are stuck.
Between hauling stuff, paying first/last/deposit on an apartment, supporting yourself while you don't have income during the move and potentially finding a new job, it adds up fast, and most low wage earners literally will never be able to save that, or at least in a reasonable amount of time to, as you imply people should do, flee redistricting and gerrymandering.
They suppress the non ruling parties vote.
