usually after you have applied the first coat to all the threads you want to finish, you run the torch lightly over them just a second or two.. to get your air bubbles out after mixing you should run the torch over your finish first before ever applying (i take a plate with alluminum foil wrapped around it and put the finish on it then hit it with the torch
I like the idea of epoxy based finishes on all my blanks, as we know how thin carbon fiber blank walls are, it's a lot of extra protection. Many go smooth and look great, but sometimes I get "that one!" You know, finish, sand off, repeat...I'm using U-40 Dura Gloss High Build. I've actually considered going to a urethane finish for the blanks, for ease of smooth finish. It's always an area of blank around 5/16-3/8" or so, also. Any tips? Lots compliments, wish to go full time. Only this issue.
Great video! I had a quick question though. I have an old Bass Pro rod that I would like to fix up - the epoxy or color preserver around several of the guides is cracked. I would like to remove it and apply new preserver, but what is the best way to do this without damaging the rod itself? Heat gun? Indirect heat from a flame? Thanks!
wow nice work.do you have a website or a price list.i would like to purchase one of your custom builds...for surf fishing something that would withstand a shark or large bull reds,or 6'-7' alligator gar here in south texas...
After the first coat of finish where the threads absorb the finish and have visible spots showing, how long did you wait to put the light second coat on? did you wait until the first coat was fully dry or just go up the rod and come right back to it?
ive seen these kinds of rods in action on youtube how does the epoxy not crack under pressure when you fighting a goliath grouper or shark? or any rod for that matter
what is the difference between high build and light build? i know i saw some by threadmaster and i was just wondering what the benefits are and when i should use either one.
u got a thread going wild on your diamond wrap, sure you caught it, plus its been like 2 years hahaha, so it doesnt matter anymore,,,but it was bugging me :(....love your rods! im going to try my finishing like this next time. i usally put the rod on the 90 so the top of the guide is facing me get heavy drops on the 90, let it sit for a few minutes to hit those caves, then rotated 180 and repeatt...

Interesting!!!! Right on Dude!
actually if he is using the torch to get air bubbles out then it is still wet from the first coat.. it take about 12-24 hours to let t dry all the way
do rod builders do the whole entire rod in epoxy/finish, or just spots you wrap?

great vid bro i'm thinking about getting into rod building

nice work bench!
beautiful rod
after about 20-25 whole minutes of sitting still, i then turn on the motor and tend to the flat spots, bubbles, etc....any ideas on that method?
Curious of where you got that dryer?
how long do you leave the rod untill the second coat, after it has started to soak into the thread? do you like the prokote finish?
ok that makes sense thank you!

What size brushes do you use and where can I buy them?
flex coat is much better finish. it has a longer pot life. I can get away with one coat, and it's thick with a glass like sooothness.
What is epoxy and what is a finish? What brand do you use and where the heck do you buy them?
dakotalayinlow Yes, I've since heard good things about Threadmaster so I am going to promote it without ever testing it.
Anyway I could order a rod from you and pay for it to be shipped?
everyone just says apply the finish but what is this finish?
ziaudeen mahomed sayid Thread Master, it a two-part epoxy.
what glue do u use when u done wrapping it
great work, ANNOYING "UH" "UM" "UH"
Apply at night and then refinish second coat the next morning.

@swordsallday yes. the next day.
I use threadmaster.
when you went back on the second coat of finish, was it already dried?
