    I use so many of your tips as a single mom to a 1 year old little girl I even went and applied for wic after watching one of your videos and man did that help out bread milk eggs fruit peanut butter it’s so much stuff that I qualify for so my baby can eat a semi healthy diet thank you ❤️❤️❤️

      In the summer call up your local school district and ask if they are doing free meals for kids. My district gave a cooked breakfast and a sack lunch each day of the summer but not on weekends. Given to "students" ages 1 to 18.

      @@VickyEvaAnn in our area, the summer feeding program is for younger than school age as long as they can chew 😍 alot of people dont realize that. Hope it helps

    Oh girl.... In my household growing up, sometimes we just had mayo sandwiches. Nothing but mayo and bread. No kidding. And ya know what? I loved it. I didn't complain. Kids were adaptable back in the day... we just wanted to eat and go back outside as quickly as possible to play with our friends. Nowadays, I'm not even sure if kids play outside anymore. Weird world we live in... Thanks for keeping in real Christine.

      I once made a sandwich with bread and three strips of each: mayo, mustard, ketchup. I remember it wasn't as good as I thought it would be. That was what I thought was a cool experiment back in the day.

    FYI, instead of tap water to clean out the marinara jar use the pasta water. It’s starchy and doesn’t thin out the sauce as much. Love you and the fam.

      I just put lid back on jar and shake then pur into rest of sauce and then take a rubber spatula to get the rest out

    Team green beans here! When I was young, saw a family member cooking eat 2 green beans out a can she just opened. When I asked why, she told me that the cook must eat 2 green beans from each can they open. Just green beans, not other veggies. So I did it when I started cooking too. Obviously, I finally figured out she was pulling my leg but I still eat 2 out of every can I open, because …., ummm….why not? I am 63 now. LOL

      I absolutely love that story, because it's something I would do. My dad (who I adored) would say things like eat beans America needs the gas (Ok, I know I dating myself) or when a bottle would say shake before opening he would shake his body then pick up the bottle and open it. I followed his directives for years and years and years until my sister told me to stop making her kids weird. 😊😁😎

      Very cute! At our house on holidays we'd have a treat. A plate with raw carrot sticks, black olives from a can, and raw celery sticks. We'd make a big deal outta quality control on the olives. Carefully tasting a few to make sure that can met our "standards". 😋😂Sadly that generation in my family passed but I still check the olives because you just never know...🤣

    My grandparents grew a massive garden and we always got a homegrown tomato and sliced it up and made a tomato sandwich! Best ever!

      With miracle whip. I still have a tomato sandwich at least once a week! Don’t forget hamburger gravy! Brown a pound of hamburger and then add a Tbsp or two of flour mix in well till flour is lightly browned and then add milk slowly while stirring. Stir in milk before adding more. Gravy will not thicken until it boils, never stop scraping bottom of pan. Serve over two slices of toasted bread.

      @@cindysnyder5189 Yep. Mayo, sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper, and either plain white bread or toasted. One of the few times I eat mayo.

    Save half of the sausage in the pasta dish and save the other for the potato soup. This will stretch the protein from one meal to two. I cook the chorizo in the tube and when done I add a can or black beans (or whatever you like), to the pan. This stretches the protein and will give you left overs for several meals. Same with the turkey roll, cut with beans and use the remainder for another dish. To save more $ purchase dry beans, they stretch further and are cheaper. We love green beans, ground meat, cubed potatoes, tomato sauce severed over pasta of choice. Budget friendly does not have to be tasteless. ❤

    I grew up with velveeta being the only cheese that we knew. Made good Mac and cheese in the oven. I never knew about other cheeses probably until I got married and started grocery shopping. We were dairy farmers until around 1963 so you would think that we would be all about dairy. We drank milk at every meal- from our own cows. We had chickens also so eggs for every breakfast. I’m 74 yo. So my teen years was in the 1960s. To me that doesn’t seem so long ago but to others it probably seems ancient.

      I understand you completely Mary. I'm 63, so my teen years were in the 70s. I always laugh when my daughter (28yo) says something is really old, then clarifies by saying it was 2009, for example.That doesn't seem old to me at all. LOL

      Funny about the cheese even though you had a dairy farm. I grew up with Velveeta too, it’s still the best to me when melting cheese in a recipe. We eat a lot of fiesta cheese but it has almost no taste 😅

    I used to melt cheese singles on half a bagel. My family was not poor or struggling when I grew up. I just liked the taste. My mom was home with us and she taught me all types of tricks to lower our food bill. She taught me about investing and banking. She made our meals at home. I'm thankful to have learned so much from my parents. I am a working mom. We bring all meals with us to work and school. I even pack thermos and coolers for my kids sporting events. My income is not great, so using my mom's tips has helped supplement my lower income. I'm desperately trying to put off getting a part time job because I want to be on my kids schedule still. So I need to do everything possible to save where I can.

    I love chili on potatoes. Bean soup is also a surprisingly good topping.
    Also, a tip for cheap pasta sauce is to replace the meat with cooked red lentils. I cook up a batch of it and store it in the freezer to add to things like pasta sauce. extra fiber so super filling and its cheaper than ground meat.

    Hey, Christine, my family used to own a restaurant in our small town that was pretty much famous locally for their baked potatoes... the way we fluffed them was to wrap each potato in foil before putting it in the oven, then when they came out, wrap in a dishrag and smoosh on the counter....

    I hate Miracle Whip so much. But, I grew up having cheese sandwiches exactly as you described with Hellman's mayo. We didn't have much money growing up and we found creative ways to stay fed. Sometimes it meant having a half sandwich with cream cheese on it, sometimes it was a cheese sammy, sometimes I even had mayo sammies. We did what we had to. We never went without, but we didn't eat lavishly.

    I had potatoes explode in the oven once in my twenties lol, we had friends over and put them in the oven and then forgot about them when we all got to talking and kept delaying making the rest of dinner. They were actually the tastiest potatoes, the skins were dry and crunchy like chips and the insides soft and fluffy :)

      @@happycook6737 lol I was twenty-something in college. I didn't have a crockpot. I had one frying pan, one pot, and and not even a sheet pan. It was rare to cook food at all we usually just ordered pizza.

    I made Vienna Sausage sandwiches. Mashed with pickle relish, finely chopped celery and mayo. Told the kids it was ham salad. When your broke you still got to eat. Thanks Christine.

    After you flip the quesadilla, use chili-lime spice in place of the salt. A dash of green tabasco in the middle also makes the whole thing fresh & light.

    Cheese sandwiches were definitely a real meal. Even my kids got it (but in all honesty, they're your age 😏)
    I sometimes laugh at the "frugal" things. That's how I've always cooked and thought it was normal. Our meal plan included whatever was on clearance that week. When I could get the 10lb bags of chicken leg quarters for $1.90 is was a GREAT week.

    Fun fact, in Iceland cause we don't use evaporated milk very often because it's not readily available. In one store I found it, it's $11 dollars :') for a can just like yours. Seems to be a luxury item here haha

      You can make your own evaporated milk from fresh milk. I did it when I lived overseas. Another way is to use dry milk powder. You can find recipes online.

    If you want your potatoes faster you can parboil them while the oven pre-heats. Just in case anyone is as impatient as me. ❤️😄
    And if you are on a tight budget: tomato paste, water, salt, and Italian seasoning make quite a good sauce.

    And if you take a jar of Prego and give it a good whack on the bottom of the jar you'll hear the seal break and it will pop right open! This works on most jars like this😀❤️

    honestly... in recent time I have had the miracle whip cheese sandwich when i don't have leftovers to take to work for lunch.. i actually love that combo it's the nostalgia for sure :) That or a hard boiled egg sliced.. with real mayo.. maybe a piece of lettuce.. just hits the good old fashioned spot lol

    Cinnamon toast is my favorite thing from childhood. It only showed up for our birthday breakfast. So incredibly good, cheap, and simple.

      Grandpa was from Tennessee and his specialty was "Sugar Toast". Butter on bread, sugar on top of that and bake until crispy. Serve with hot cocoa and send us home sugared up! Lolz

    Potatoes came out of the oven not quite soft enough. So I put them in the microwave for a minute. Potato blew apart and hit the door hard enough to open it so potato went all over the kitchen-cabinets, counters and floor. And I also grew up on Kraft singles cheese sandwiches but with Hellman’s. And since it was called a single, that is what we got 😅

    One of the favorite memories I have is…my Mom making individual pizzas using a slice of bread, ketchup, oregano, and a slice of that cheese. We thought it was wonderful and never dreamed that is was because there wasn’t much food in the house!

    “Goofy Grilled Cheese” was definitely a meal for our kids! American cheese slices and Miracle Whip on cheap wheat bread, microwaved for about 10 seconds to make it warm and gooey. 😋

    Something I do to help get the spaghetti sauce out without using water is I take some of the cooked meat, put it in the jar and shake it. It works for me every time.

    All great ideas! My grandma used to make Salisbury steak, another cheap meal really...I think there are recipes that the older generations used to make that were budget friendly too.     I have a large international bunch of friends and my favourite way of being hospitable would be to invite them to lunch. Quite often lunch was a hearty soup with crusty bread which seems to be a favourite with many North American people and their cultures, fast forward 14 years and my same international friends who would come quite often for lunch told me "you know we're not really big soup eaters in our culture." It took her fourteen years to tell me as they were polite and they would eat it, but in those fourteen years I could have served many other things.... but we had a good laugh! Having said this, soup isn't always a favourite and yet it's cheap and nutritious and I say it's a shame if you can't give it a try because it fills a lot of bellies for a few pennies. Thank you Christine! Our parents were make-do with what we have types! My father likes to put molasses on bread with a boiled dinner, and because I worshipped the ground he walked on, I ate mine that way too. There are no rules in a family that is struggling to keep food on the table for a large number of kids! Great job Christine!

    I have to jump in here and talk about the potato soup, I made it just like your mom and did not like the evaporated milk taste to it, sorry, so Instead I made it again with heavy cream and it was to die for delicious! So for those out there that do not like evaporated milk, there you go, you can still make it and love it!

    I'm number 4 of 5. I didn't eat kraft cheese till well into my teenage years. My mom always made things from scratch. I'm not a fan if kraft cheese but will eat it. Also totally believe it only belongs on or in certain foods. You potato soup always looks good but being that I'm typically a scratch made home(lucky to be a stay at home)Don't get me wrong when I worked outside the house believe me I made shortcuts. I would never use only kraft cheese in my soup. Cheddar all the way with a slice or two(and that's pushing it for me) kraft cheese.

    When my kids were growing up, their favorite meal was chili, chips & cheese! Usually canned chili, any brand…heated, toss shredded cheese on top, add a spoonful of sour cream and scoop up each bite with Fritos Scoop chips. My kids are grown now but my son stills eats this meal, much to the chagrin of his wife (a professional chef). 😂😂 Quick and easy to make too!!

    We used to eat tomato sandwiches with mayo. Tomatoes were fresh from the garden! Still like them today! Boiled cabbage over bread and butter is so good too!

    I’m definitely making that peanut butter cheese cake with the leftover creamy peanut butter I have from my extreme grocery budget challenge that I just did! My family doesn’t love creamy peanut butter all that much, so I’ve been trying to think of a way to use it up. Thanks for the idea! 😊

    YES!!! Miracle whip and either Kraft or Borden wrapped slices on white bread!!! YUM! My dad thought that was fancy because he grew up with mayonnaise on bread only!!! 6 kids widowed mom! She did what she could!!!

    Oh my gosh - I remember Velvetta and miracle whip sandwiches in my lunches. Thinking back now - it was pretty gross. As a kicker though - I remember mom used to get lots of bread at the bakery outlet and would sometimes forget to take the loaf out of the freezer the night before. I have vivid memories of popping off slices by banging the loaf on the side of the counter. The positive thing is that when you put Velvetta between two frozen brickette slices, it acts like a thermos pack in your lunchbox...and it's usually thawed out by lunch...mostly. Who's hungry?!😆

    Cheese sandwiches were my go to lunch as a kid. As an adult, add mayo and a sliced tomato from the garden and oh em gee!

    My mom was a fantastic cook and used all the chefy techniques before it was a thing, which adds a ton more flavor. For potato soup Mom would fry up a piece or two of bacon,take it out and drain it and crumble it up to sprinkle over the soup to serve. Then she would saute the onion and some chopped celery in the bacon fat before adding the potatoes. She didn't use cheese in the soup. It was yummy!

    Growing up our “grilled cheese” was a slice of American cheese, served open faced, grilled under the broiler, and miracle whip on top. Sounds weird now, but was quite yummy!

    Poor Preacher's kid here...we ate plain cheese sandwiches all the time. Best was when one of the Ladies' in the church made fresh rolls so we had fresh rolls and cheese. Wonderful memories and I got the roll recipe to make for friends and family now.

    Yep. Kraft singles or the store brand and miracle whip (or store brand) were cheese sandwiches, unless I had it grilled. Nana made those every Saturday when I was little, with strawberry Jell-O with a cream topping that was runny in its own way but I loved it. I think it was called Dream Whip.

    Oh my goodness! I thought I was the only person who ate miracle whip and American cheese slice on good ol cheap white bread as a kid. And loved it! Also a hot dog in white bread was another staple!!! I’m not as weird as I thought!!!

    My favorite snack growing up was white bread dipped in a glass of milk. Sometimes I went crazy and ate a spoonful of peanut butter right out of the jar. The simpler the snack, the better it is.

    The cheese and bread with mayo is normal for my family. We also had mayo and homemade bread as well as just the bread. I have a great appreciation for those experiences because it has been a benefit in times when that is all you have.

    I had miracle whip and sliced dill pickles sandwiched on two slices of white bread quite often as a child. Nothing like crunchy dill pickles and tangy salad dressing. I have not had that in a long time. Loved it as a kid. Not so sure if I would still love this childhood favorite

    My dad is 91 and he will still eat a cheese sandwich. He LOVES cheese! He prob left out the miracle whip but he would add a tomato slice if he has any❤❤❤ for years mom made him home made mayo. Not sure why she quit making that.

    Cacique also makes a soy chorizo. My local Cardenas Mexican market it's the same price as the regular kind. So even if you aren't vegan or vegetarian; give it a try. I am a vegan so I always use the soy version. My non vegan sister uses the soy version. It's an easy swap if you are having vegetarian guests over.
    I am a huge fan of using vegan versions whenever possible. Even if you have no plans on going vegan you can still make a difference for the animals and the environment by making vegan swaps. If it costs the same and gets the job done; might as well.

    I have a similar recipe for the cheese cake. Instead of peanut butter use about a 1/2 can of crushed pineapple. Toast some cocoanut for garnish on top.

    Another cheap, easy quesadilla-type meal that we make; spread pizza sauce on your tortilla, top with some pepperoni and shredded cheese, slap another tortilla on top and bake til golden brown around the edges. Yummy!

    My Texas Mamaw always added 1 Tbsp of sugar to all green beans and squash, so I add Swerve Granulated Sweetner or Splenda Stevia, two slices of chopped bacon, and a good sprinkle of dried basil leaves, Redmond sea salt, & fresh ground black pepper. I also love to add small red potatoes to cook with green beans. After beans & potatoes are done, quarter potatoes & add butter to your serving. Of course fresh green beans are the best but canned will work too. Pair with some hot buttered cornbread and you have a great meal. Also the recipe for Granny Green Beans from Tammy on Collard Valley Cooks RUclips channel kick canned green beans up several notches and they taste like fresh garden green beans.

    When I make sloppy joe’s, I use the thick and chunky (mild) salsa from Kroger ( the cheaper the better it seems😂) and it really makes a wonderful supper for me. Since you like “ hot” stuff ,you could use spicier salsa. Give it a try.🥰

    In Sweden, sandwiches are bread, butter, and a slice of cheese (not American haha) open faced. They eat them for breakfast. When my Swedish husband’s dad asked me if I wanted a sandwich, I was not expecting that.

    My grandkids love cheese sandwiches. They even tried toasted them in the sandwich maker which just toast the outside and heats the inside but they can do it themselves (with supervision of course).

    My family of 8 loves potato soup. I double the recipe and use my homemade bone broth to make it. That makes us a meal and a lunch the next day. If you need to be Gluten Free the best price on pasta is the Great Value Gluten Free pasta. It is one of the few GF pasta in 16 oz instead of 12 oz packaging. It also cooks up better than many of the other brands.

    Kraft cheese sandwich sounds yummy! I grew up doing a thick layer of margarine on white bread and then topping that with white sugar so it was coated like a donut.. 😊I remember it being SO GOOD. Weird I’m sure.

    🥪Cheese sandwiches totally normal. I still eat one now and then but use mayo and cheddar or Colby cheese.
    🥔 My family loves baked potato and salad night. I should have potato night after we’ve had chili night.
    They also LOVE sloppy joes because I serve them with potato chips 😆 (and potato salad for me 😁). Aren’t many meals I allow chips so it’s a treat.
    My mom makes a no bake cherry cheesecake for holidays to go with pies. Very nostalgic for me.

    Miracle whip was popular with my mom also. Cheese or tomato or cucumber with miracle whip made a lot of lunches. A Carnation kids cookbook had shredded cheese and Mayo mixed together to make a sandwich. Had that a lot too! 😀

    Yum! Good recipes! We do baked potatoes in a crock pot. Put a tiny bit of olive oil on the skin and cover the whole potato with it. Then poke wholes in the potatoes with a fork. Next, wrap each potato in tin foil and put about an inch of water in crock pot. Put potatoes in and cook all day. Soft potatoes. So good. Someone mentioned tomato sandwiches. We used to have tomato and mayo sandwiches and they were good.

    I just happened to see this Video , and I like using Green Beans to make a quick supper I've made since " B. C. " ( Before Children, lol) . I used to make this a lot, as a single woman ,lived alone and it's a good Supper or lunch. I call it " taco meat roll ups" and it's a very simple recipe.
    * Ground Beef ( 1 Lb. More if your cooking for more than 2 to 3 people)
    * Drained cut Green Beans ( you can also use frozen )
    * Diced canned tomatoes ( or Rotel Mild w Green Chiles, if you have it .)
    * Optional : 1 good tbsp. Taco seasoning. If you don't have it, doesn't matter.
    *A bit of Ground Cumin, Garlic Powder and a bit of Oregano
    * Flour Tortillas ( regular taco size works best , nothing " huge " )
    * Taco Sauce/ Salsa or Pico, if desired.
    Cook the Ground Meat to desired doneness, drain if needed. Add in the Green Beans, tomatoes, Spices ( and Taco seasoning if using it )
    and S and P ,to taste . Warm the floor Tortillas ( I do this while things are cooking ) and spoon onto the Flour Tortillas, Roll up and enjoy. These do not require cheese ,unless you wish to use it, ..if so, I suggest Queso or Monterey Jack or Pepoer Jack. They are actually good without any cheese.
    I serve with sone Spanish Rice, or Black Beans, or Refried Beans, or you can simply serve wuth Fresh Guacamole and Chips.
    A mild Salsa or taco sauce is also a good addition to these, even Pico de Gallo. 🙂🍽

    I love how your recipes are relatively cheap. I've never had a potato explode on me. I used to prick my potatoes but I discovered it wasn't necessary if you're baking the potatoes. If I cook potatoes in the microwave I'll prick them.

    The only thing that horrified me about your sandwich was the use of Miracle Whip. I think it's a miracle that anyone actually thinks that stuff tastes good. I also grew up eating cheese sandwiches that my Aunt would make me, where she used Hellman's mayo, with the Kraft slices and added pickles to it. She used Arnold Brick Oven Bread. It hits.

      I only use mayo if I absolutely have to. Tastes plain, like almost flavorless texture to me, and I don't like the flavor it does have. I'd go without anything before choosing mayo. I'm biased though lol in my family mom was the only one who didn't like miracle whip 🤷‍♀️

    Pam says- mom made grill cheese with mayonnaise and plastic wrap cheese, but she always put 4 dill pickle slices on them. I was an adult before I found out this was unusual. I make real cheese real butter grill cheese now, but not very often, it's a treat. 😎

    I live alone but when I cook sausage I do the whole roll. Whatever I don't use for the meal I'm cooking at the time, goes into a container. Through the week, I use some to make sausage gravy with biscuits or scramble an egg and use the sausage and some cheese to make a breakfast taco or two. If I don't use it all it hits in a freezer bag, in the freezer, for the next time I need sausage.

    Hi there, just a quick note to say, I never prick my potatoes with a fork...so much hard work! I prick them with a paring knife, so much quicker and easier...assuming you don't slip and stab your hand of course...that's never going to end well!

    No fake cheese (American/Velveeta) or fake mayo (Miracle Whip) for me! If you're going to make a toasted or grilled cheese sandwich, use real cheddar or any other real cheese, not that rubbery stuff. It also melts when heated and tastes so much better! I'm glad to see you make quesadillas like me--most people do one tortilla and fold it in half. That takes twice as much time to get the same number of wedges.

    Our public schools serve children with overdue lunch charges cheese sandwiches for lunch until the overdue balance is brought back to green. Cheese sandwiches are most definitely a thing! While not the favorite lunch served in the lunchroom I’m thankful they don’t allow the kids go hungry!
