I will be quite honest here: The characters designs are questionable compared to the original, but in terms of 3D CG animation quality, this looks fantastic imo. I’m amazed by how fluid it is. Studio Orange really knows how to use 3D and making masterpieces like Land of the Lustrous and Beastars. But it’s a shame that, no matter how good it looks, no matter how much they try, some people will hate this just because it’s in 3D.
For the most part i prefer 2D animation over 3D, but the reality is that 3D is just as amazing as 2D. It’s different but unique. If you do it right, you can make wonders. It doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets because we barely have 2D hand drawn animation in theaters. Just because we had Berserk 2016 and Ex-Arm, it doesn’t mean that all 3D anime are like that. People should take a look at the Studio Orange projects to see that 3D can be good to anime if you use it well.

I was a little apprehensive first going into this show, knew nothing about Trigun and was skeptical of 3D but after being shown the ending scene of ep1 and knowing it was the same company that did Beastars I wanted to give it a try and honestly, Orange is doing a fantastic job. The musics super fun, seems they've kept the western/jazzy saxophone/electric vibes of the original but really cranked up.
All the character animation is so smooth, expressive and lively. The scene framing and lighting just hits a soft spot for me especially all the ways they use the reflections in Vash's glasses.
liking the new changes, the world seems a bit more fleshed out and I get the new character portrayals, Meryle seems to have much more initiative in the actual main plot. Wolfwood was a little shocking but I like it, the use of 2D and the music for his backstory was awesome! and I'm curious if they'll have Milly come in at some point or not.
Thanks to Stampede, I just watched the OG Trigun and oh boy has it aged, way too much womanizing, had a really slow start, animations pretty rough aside from little highlight here and there, memorably Vash's arm gun. But seeing how shockingly TINY the animation team was I'm just impressed with how it turned out and all the criticisms aside I can say I really enjoyed it! The last eps where shocking. The portrayal of Vash was was touching. overall I'm glad I watched this series and I'd say the new shows still Trigun and new Vash is still Vash.
After (hopefully season 1) of Trigun Stampede is over I look forward to reading the manga these story's both came from.

I can't help but feel like you're missing what those guys who say "this is why 90's animation is the best" are saying. I loved how gritty Trigun was and how detailed every frame was. There was choppy-ness occasionally but never to the point where it looked super bad. The people who like that old style don't watch it for some prestige hyper fluid animation at every frame and where every drawing bounces across the screen (which has never been anime's strength anyway...), we watch for that super detailed background look, varied textures, incredible color theory, varied artistic styles, interesting lighting choices, and beautiful still frames. When they say, "animation" they're referring to the show itself, not how well it moves (though it still moved damn well a lot). It was something special.
The animation may not have always been as perfect back then as it is now but it was almost always quite good. I feel like you're memeing on that crowd. New anime are just too clean looking and most of the color theory and textural grit from the old style is just completely eradicated. That old style was just so much more lively and authentic, but that's my opinion.
Regarding the new show, I don't hate 3D animation at all, or digital anime. My problem personally with the new show is that 3D just doesn't work for that style of show, and that the show for a supposed reboot just doesn't feel faithful to the source material. 3D often times is a cheap cop-out. Yes it can be expensive, but the main reason why cel anime has disappeared is because its too expensive. 3D often times IS cheaper, especially in comparison. It's more than just some guy with a pencil and paper mind you, its a whole team of trained animators, very expensive paint, stupidly expensive animation cels, etc.
The new show just has no reason to exist. I'd rather Trigun not be remade at all then to be like this. A reboot in my opinion is supposed to be faithful to some degree. It's like the first objective of a successful remake. If it's not faithful then why call it Trigun at all? Just make a new show or a spinoff like the new Dragon Ball movie (which I didn't mind being in 3D), not a supposed """reboot""". If nothing else the new style just lacks in soul, it doesn't feel like Trigun at all. Granted the anime was an adaptation of the manga, but even the anime was more faithful to the show than Stampede seems to be.
What I'm sad about regarding old anime, and what many people like me are saying as well, is that that style is just completely gone. I don't hate 3D stuff or digital art, I just hate how analog anime have been wiped off the face of the planet. I think some of the upset fans who are mad at the new one feel the same way, and their hatred toward the new show is partly coming from that. Do keep in mind that in the past 20 years and especially since covid that analog things are increasingly being replaced with digital and online things.
By the way, I'm not calling you wrong. Your opinion is valid, and I understand where you're coming from. But it's kinda unfair to disregard their take as I feel like you're misunderstanding them and writing them off as idiots.

I can appreciate it, but I am sad that the severe tone from the Manga will never reach a broader audience. I understand, it's unlikely to EVER anyways, given how dark and disturbing Trigun: Maximum gets in its later chapters. Not to mention, we're likely never going to get a reprint of Trigun in the future. (Thanks Dark Horse) I'm just sad that the feelings I had reading the manga will never be translated to a new generation of viewers. I'll give it its fair shake and I hope they can pull it off but it feels very cynical to me from the outside looking in. To me, it feels like the characters were designed too much with modern sensibilities in mind. Vash is "pretty" but not pretty like he was originally. He is more of a dreamboat hearththrob that female anime fans will drool over. That's not necessarily a bad change but it bothers me coupled with the redesigns for Rem Saversem and Meryl Strife. That and the seeming exclusion of Milly from the story entirely. (Which is inexcusable, IMO.) Rem, whether intentional or not had a somewhat androgynous build that I always found interesting. A lot of Nightow's designs evoke a different facial shape that I think is very charming. Rem in particular had a strong jaw and broad shoulders. She seemed "strong" and not in the "graceful dainty way" I guess in a way she reminds me a lot of my own mom. She's not straight-up hyper-fem-to-the-max. She had this calm, collected, imposing form that seemed to cut through everything. And for Rem's design in the new series to be basically the quintessential distillation of "tragic, idyllic mom-wife who dies too soon" really rubs me the wrong way. Similarly, Meryl Strife is somehow "cuter" with a rounder face, but WAY less sexy. She was always an exercise in contrasts. Her companion: Millie was another massive woman who towered over everyone and carried a giant gun. She had her own appeal but it was less as pin-up bait the way Meryl was. Meryl is a bigger tragedy in some ways because she was so simple! She just feels bland. Vash and Knives's haircuts as kids are just... annoying. So cyberpunk, so 80's "future" shit. Trigun's aesthetic was better served when it was a "western" first and foremost but now I'm talking in circles.
I don't like how "clean" everything looks. Trigun's world in both the anime and the Manga felt "lived in" and grimy. I don't get that feel from this series. What's especially frustrating about this is that, without a "true to manga" adaptation, the final, and likely only version modern audiences will EVER have contact with is this new one. "Trigun: Stampede" and that's great for all the people who lack that context. But for all the lip service that we consider the original manga to be a "masterpiece" we're leaving it in the dust for something else. And it'd better be good because it's kind of the last hurrah for this franchise at this point. Who's going to go back to Trigun after this? No one. And we'll never get the kind of 2D talent necessary to draw such an environment in the detail needed to make it work.
It's also frustrating because I don't think Trigun's manga is such a lofty horizon that Orange couldn't meet it. I think the reason they didn't adapt it is because it wouldn't sit well with modern audiences to have such blatant evils being portrayed on screen. No doubt the human-paste sequence, Knive's bloody effigy in the center of a small town, and other such horrors will be scrubbed from the story in favor of a more palatable villain. And that's just frustrating to me.
I hope I'm wrong. But at this point I'm yelling at a cloud. All the "New Trigun" fans get to have their fun with their "superior and far more dramatically resonant story" congrats.

I agree with you on everything except the last part.
There have been a lot of rather detestable villains doing rather horrid things in modern anime that make Knives' actions look cute in comparison. Anime has changed a lot since the 90's and at the same time, the brutality gets amped up quite a bit. There have also been a lot of series that are more severe in tone.
The point of Knives' is to be the Ultimate Evil. The Cain to Vash's Abel, so to speak. He's not supposed to be lovable, but he has reasons for his hatred and that in a way makes his motives understandable, but not defensible. He wants to make Vash see how awful humans are and ultimately destroy them.
So there's no doubt in my mind that they would include the horrible violence and attempted genocide against humans in this series. They might even amp it up a lot more.

As silly as it sounds, when you really think about it, Vash's and Knives' hairstyles in the manga/1999 anime actually carried a lot of meaning.
When Vash and Knives were kids, and Rem acted as their mother, she offered to cut their hair. Vash let her spike it up however she wanted, and he loved it. He keeps his hair the same way as an adult because it reminds him of Rem. It's all he has to remember her after her death.
Knives on the other hand, has a messy, sharp hair cut. He cut it himself, to really cement his individuality. He criticizes Vash for being too "reliant" on Rem.
This design choice to change Vash's hairstyle really bothers me with this context in mind, especially when you realize how much the haircut scene actually built the connection between Rem and Vash and Knives' build up as a villain.
Hopefully this makes sense, I didn't really want to draft an essay for a youtube reply.

At first I thought Vash had a new look because this would be a prequel series and the heavy emphasis on the flashback segment really cemented the idea in my mind. I thought it would have been cool to see Vash try to help humanity rebuild itself and if it ended during the July Incident that would have been so impactful, but alas it is a retelling and they got rid of Milly, one of the very few main female characters in the cast and replaced her with a guy who shares a name with an actor. My issue with cg is they constantly rely on moving everything all the time but it doesn't make it good, especially the story. The Pokémon remake movie is a great example how cgi lost the plot compared to the original, even if the original is limited animation.
I also feel old school dragon ball understood better boarding than the new action shows, dbs included. The camera played a role in story telling and didn't need to have the camera fly around to just show off the skill of the animators. It becomes a muddled mess. The problem isn't the use of CG, bit never using it in shows where it would apply well, and using them in shows where it ends up taking something away.
Look at Berserk, even if the CG there was at this level, it would have never done well. Berserk is a dark fantasy show, set in medieval Europe, drawn in an artistic almost 14th century relief carving way.
A show like that will ALWAYS look off in CGI, it will feel too lifeless for it. Berserk was best done in the 90s style where backgrounds and scenes where handprints, not just 2d.
Look at Dorohedoro, a Dark Death metal inspired world filled with Gore, Guts and Grit. Every line in its manga is scratchy and stainy looking, because it emphasises the dirt and darkness of this world.
Dorohedoro had awesome CG, and it did well, but it didn't get to the level of fame it should have had. The world looked far too, clean, too sterile and too perfect....the CG ended up clashing with the visual style of the work.
      .....
      .....
The you see Land of the Lustrous. Perfect Imortal non human Lifeforms, fighting an invasion of celestial beings in an ideally but empty world. The CG fit here properly, the otherness of the characters is perfectly expressed here, their strange dirty movement being encapsulated by the medium. The moon peoples perfection was also enhanced by their perfectly still models.
Look at Gantz, a group of people sent to a strange futuristic hellscaoe and forced to fight eldritch monstrosities. One of the best movies and CGI I've ever seen. The CGI enhances everything from the paradoxical sterilisation of the city, to the disgusting creepiness of the monsters.
      ...
      ...
The Problem isn't cgI is bad, but that for some reason people want to force it where its never going to work.
Look at this new Trigun. Did they need CG? Nope. Was it cheaper? NOPE. Was it easier to implement? *HELL NO.* Did it aid in some tense and hard to animate environmental scenes? Most of those didn't even exist in the source material.
Did you have to redesign the character? Nope. Did you have to cut out a fan favourite character? Nope.
You see where people are going with the dislike of this?

3-d animation is technically cheaper to work with than 2-d. Even with the exhorbitant cost for 3-d software like Maya, once a character is rigged it's very easy to work with and saves a lot of time. I actually went to college for animation and worked with software like Maya. Once I learned it, it was actually possible to animate a whole 30 seconds worth of animation in 2 days if the characters are properly rigged. And also, all character models and background assets are reusable, which also saves time and energy. For 2-d, just 30 seconds worth of animation is going to take 2-3 weeks of time depending on how quickly someone can draw. Backgrounds may have to be redrawn over and over from several different angles when in CG all that has to be adjusted is the 3-d camera. In other words, the time that's saved is worth the price of the software and paying employees a higher wage. It's an investment that pays off really quickly.

    • @justinleach9344
      @justinleach9344 Год назад +2

As someone who produces animation in the US and Japan, I can tell you first hand CG is definitely more expensive than 2D. There is so much overhead and specialization (hair, fur, cloth simulations, rigging, modeling, fx, etc). Every asset needs to be built and accounted for. I also went to college for animation too :) I think one of the challenges with 2D is that is so hard to find available and skilled animators at the level of quality that people desire. Making the animation in 3D requires less drawing skills, but does require animation and timing skills. Being able to draw animation or paint a background is far less complicated, requiring less people. The 2D animation system, developed over decades is a very well organized and effecient machine. Sadly, wages are very low in Japan and people are often overworked.

    • @multi-milliondollarmike5127
      @multi-milliondollarmike5127 Год назад

@@justinleach9344 That's intriguing, because technically wouldn't the time saved from everything being rigged save money in the long run? I can understand that if it's made for an expensive movie that may not get a sequel, it would more than likely be more expensive than 2-d. But for something like an animated series , the initial investment for building and rigging everything should save time in the long run. Less time that would have been used for drawing poses, frames, backgrounds, etc. That should save the company money from having to pay a monthly salary to their employees, which should create a much faster retun on investment. Since a computer is literally handling all the inbetweens, even with some specialist being needed, the time and money saved should equate to less expenses and more growth in a short amount of time.

I'm also not crazy about his new design but so far I can deal with everyone else's change in design except his, it just doesn't feel like it fits
I think it might be to match the outward appearance of Vash and how he looks a lot more youthful now, but it just doesn't really register in my mind that this is supposed to be the same character, that is as long as you didn't see him with his giant cross gun

As much as I understand anime fan's aversion to CG anime if we completely stop animators from using the tool we will never get it to the quality that it potentially has. Unlike other fields, animation does not have a lot of time for practice runs due to the nature of the medium being time consuming and tedious so the only time animators can experiment with new technologies is with actually using it at an approved for air production. Sometimes this will end up with certain technologies being bad for a while because artists will be beginners at it, ergo anime fan's bias towards cgi due to past experience.
CG, however, is a very powerful tool, just look at Pixar and Into the Spiderverse bringing out its full potential. If there is any studio out there who works with CGI because they have a passion for the medium it is studio Orange. Their portfolio should be enough to prove that they have what it takes to make a cgi anime look amazing.

The original anime was goofy with certain seriousness until it slowly revealed bits and pieces and turned darker and darker and kept you wondering and now... Served on a siver platter?

The designs look like generic J-RPG fantasy and not the Futuristic Old West meets the 90's meets Heavy Metal magazine the way the original did. Think about Vash's design he's wearing a duster that is clearly a civil war era uniform coat and is wearing glasses eerily similar to Mickey Knox in "Natural Born Killers" his designs screams desperado, killer, gun slinger, and the goofy visual gags and Vash's kind/pacifist nature goes against the very design of the character which is why Vash is so fun. What is the design here for Vash in the remake, besides Kirito with gun in red with Cyberpunk 2077 hair and glasses.

They would have had to have a whole team just for his hair if they tried to use the original design. As long as the story is still old west wackiness with weird sci-fi science, it will be fine. Cause that is what really drew me into the series in the first place. The mix of new and old worked so well. Maybe we will get new Lore as well? After watching a couple of episodes of the new show I can certainly appreciate the hard work Studio Orange did for it, but sadly, it's not the Vash I grew up with. He's not goofy enough. What makes Vash truly remarkable to me as a distinct protagonist is how Looney Tunes'ish he is with his expressions that are borderline ridiculous, but sets him apart from other "badass gunslingers". I can definitely understand that from a technical level it would be challenging to deform the 3D models in a way to give him truly absurd expressions, but the lack of that fails to deliver what made Vash truly memorable for me. I'm not a huge fan of his new design either, looks a bit generic. The animation and action scenes look TOP NOTCH, though. Can't complain there.

Spike Head! Thats important design for Vash. And please the gun design was jarring for me, because in the Manga anda Remake Manga, the gritty and raw power of gunpowders made was and is still the lives and vibes for this manga!
Compare to the redesign of the gun (Vash's White Underbarrel Revolver is so iconic that if you dont use it then it is not your everyday Vash) and Wolfwood Crossgun with laser (it is just yuck to this point).
I know I love another take in Trigun manga to anime or other platform made it gain more fanbase and we the early fans can smile to meet the old friend Vash, but please dont alienate the Early Fanbase to made this acceptable in terms of new marketing.

one thing to understand about the cost of running a business that focuses on art is that alot of people think that they dont have to buy the art supplies every week- two weeks depending on how much they do, how many errors they need to fix or redo, and how many artist are working at one time is that it isnt true that is one of the upkeep costs it adds up and gets expensive fast but having to buy a set of computers (Which you will be doing regardless otherwise how will you get it made digital so it can be on tv etc?) and the program which helps with the animation might sound expensive to someone who doesnt know anything about it but stop and think unless you mess up and get the subscription for those things (not recommended) its normally just one upfront cost, depending on what it is the "Business" license of it could say cost $1000-$3000 (Which for what it is is kinda cheap at the $1000 mark) and that is a one time purchase and now you have paid one amount for anywhere between 4-12 if not more people to now use the program and now they can make corrections as many times as needed and further edits all without needing to buy more paper, pencils, color items, erasers, etc. So yes doing the digital work like that is cheaper as far as supplies goes and not adding in if people are paid more for knowing the program or not. That is completely different as that isnt a supply cost.

So it's harder (=more expensive) to find staff for a big traditionally animated project, co-ordinating the production of hand-drawn art is difficult logistically (=more expensive), and it takes more man-hours to produce each episode (=more expensive).
