The attitudes of the Japanese make sense. I lived in Japan with my gf and her family including her grandfather for a while before we moved out to my place in Nagoya. The elderly Japanese are very friendly to foreigners. I found on more than one occasion I was actually given extra food from stores and I knew people who taught in Hokkaido that were given produce by farmers. I also have seen the best and the worst of foreigners in Japan. Some foreigners are openly disruptive and aggressive, particularly on public transport or when drunk, getting grabby with girls and also just ignoring common sense rules like not talking too loudly on the phone on trains. There is this attitude of working to make society better in Japan where Japanese do what they can to not ruin the way things are for others. Westerners tend to think in terms of how to benefit oneself. That said, there are some people, mostly nerds, who come to Japan having watched anime and try and embrace some of the culture, bowing and being polite and are actually interested in what their Japanese friends say is correct etiquette in regards to good behaviour. It's the same as any country, be respectful of their way of life when visiting.

    興味深い対照ですね。日本はしばしば官僚的な傾向や短期的なリスク回避のために変化に抵抗しているように見えますが、実際には外部の影響を受け入れる際に、世界で最も適応力のある文化の一つです。
