    I was going crazy with thrips. What I ended up doing was filling up my tub dunking into soapy ish water, then with the shower pressure I wash it again spray neem oil let it chill and then rinse. Then I throw the dirt out and rinse the roots. New dirt, and then for the next few dais I use the sink sprayer and rinse the plant without getting the new dirt wet. And I somehow got rid of them. I did this for 2 weeks. So it was deffff a lot of work, but so glad it’s behind now.

    You know I got a silver sword and it grew like crazy last summer and I had one huge long piece. I watched some Planterina vid where she had a lot of rooted philodendrons growing up giant states in the middle and they looked like full out trees. I thought I'd going to do the same with mine then do a ton of cuttings, my friend and sister thought I was insane. From my one plant I got 12 cuttings and rooted all the babies. I then got a really nice floor planter at the end of Fall clearance sale, also got a huge plastic liner pot for it and transferred the mother and all the babies into that pot. This monster in the making took off on me like crazy - all the babies and mother plant have been thriving I think by the end of spring going into summer I can start training them to a huge stake I got for the center. I cannot wait to see how full and hedge like this monster is going to get lol. When in doubt go with your gut on cutting. :)

    Hi Fern, I’m so glad to see you Bath your cuttings. I have a large ziplock bag that I use solely for soaking cuttings. I also got rid of all soil that infected plants were in. And disinfected surfaces and places where the plants had been living, and where I’d dealt with them. I had a bad thrips infection amongst my 90 plant collection, in several rooms. I sprayed every plant once a week for several weeks. Then introduced predator mites after 14 days for 4 weeks. Then any sign that plant either was bathed for an hour in soapy water, or took cuttings and soaked them, or binned it. Now a few months on I feel at last it’s gone. 😀

    I had thrips 7 months ago and i actually found a very effective strategy that only required me to cut like the really affected leaves and all the plants have jumped back now :)
    I sprayed them down and put them in clear plastic bags. Since thrips can reproduce asexually and have a life cycle of 40 days, this ensures that they cannot spread from plant to plant. If you spray em down every week, youll eventually kill them. Systemic insecitices are very helpful too. With this method she wouldn't have needed to cut nearly all of the leaves off

    My silver sword has been having all sorts of issues. Yet I can't figure out what's wrong with it!! So I totally understand the frustration you feel.
    I don't think mine has thrips though. It's getting clear sticky sap all over the stocks and eventually discoloration starts to happen.

    True story about trips.
    I had some plants infested with trips, and I had some ants trying to get at my cat's food.
    I got this insecticide for the ants and in the process of treating that area for ants I got some of this insecticide on my plant.
    I freaked out, thought my plant (monstera) was going to die.
    2 weeks later the plant is fine, the thrips are gone.
    So I experimented. I took a plant that was not that expensive and I had no problem losing and I sprayed it all over with the insecticide. Within seconds all the trips on it were dead, and 2 weeks later I had new growth the plant was thriving there were no more thrips. Even when placed next to another plant with trips they wouldn't go on that plant that was treated with this insecticide.
    I sprayed my entire collection with it. it caused no damage and I have no thrips, spider mites, mealybugs or fungus nats.
    The product is made by Wilson it's called Ant Out ant and roach killer.
    It smells like mint and works better than any insecticidal soap I have ever used.

    Soooo I have a leaf that looks like that on my PPP and I’m freaked out! I wish I could send you a photo. The inner most part of the leaf that unfurled is wrinkled and turned soft and brown…I have no one to help me diagnose! I keep suspecting bugs but when I look soooo close I don’t see a bunch of bugs crawling on my plants like the google images. Idk what to do! I keep on buying pesticides but I’ve only used the stuff for fungus gnats in the soil cuz I don’t wanna spray captain jacks if there’s really not bugs.

    So sad seeing chopping it all off and start again. Hopefully they will grow full again. They are lovely plants and very rare too. My collection is mostly Hoya’s and succulents and Cacti so i only come across fungas gnats. And the occasional fungas and mildew. Maybe leafy plants tend to get more pests like thrips and mealy bugs and spider mites. I recently saw a lovely Euphorbia Ingens in a nursery and was my first time saw mealy bugs on it. Which was a pity since i would love to own a Euphorbia. Especially the ghost and the variegated one.

      @@wildfern That's good to hear! I also shower my plants a lot. So I totally get where you're coming from!! I find that holding off on that and dealing with seeing a few bugs on my plants is worth it in the long run as thrips have such long life cycles and had killed many of my plants despite frequent thorough spray downs and systemic granules.

    Was the moss pole saturated when you were trying to get the roots out? Next time try to make sure it's really wet and put a little dish soap in some water in a spray bottle and use it as a lubricant to wiggle the roots out of the moss with a toothpick or plastic fork. Also, for water propagation, I have really good luck when I put a chunk of charcoal in the water. It keeps it clean and I'm lazy about changing the water, so I'm able to just top it off.

    I usually air layer my Florida Beauty before cutting them, for higher rate of survival. Mortality rate of wet stick/leaf cuttings (without sufficient roots) of Florida Beauty is very high, I tried them before in sphagnum, perlite, vermiculite, soil, water and almost all of them died. Your silver sword is beautiful. Mine is really not growing well and doing the same as yours due to spider mites. I’ve seen damage that looks like thrip damage but I just can’t find anything other that the mites. So confused. Really hoping you get rid of those suckers girly 💖

    I have the same moss poles from Trofolia and I love them but struggle to keep them moist 😩 how often do you mist/fill yours to get roots growing into them like your Florida beauty’s did?

    I need a magnifying glass for sure! I've never seen a thrip, yet I'm positive I've had them. This video makes me paranoid. Silver sword is one of my favorite plants too, but mine has decapitated itself twice now, so I'm air layering the top to chop it and start over.

    Thrips seem to just not care about neem oil. Honestly, I've seen them just having a picnic on the leaves I used neem oil on. I HATE thrips so much lol. Only thing that obliterated them for me was the Provanto concentrate from Amazon, but I know a lot of people don't like going down the chemical route 🙂

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 года назад

      lol yes I've eliminated them with neem once but it was a lot of work & I was only dealing with one plant! I don't think it can be relied on for a whole outbreak, unless you want it to be your full time job 😆

    • @daria9855

      Same here ! Washed every single leaf, seperated the plant and treatened it with neem oil, next morning they were back.

    • @zarahya6123

      The problem is that neem doesn’t hurt them, but from my understanding it makes the next generation sterile, so that way it sloooowly eliminates them 😅

    Are you able to get Captain Jacks Deadbug spray? I had thrips for a few months and that finally did the trick for me. Good luck with bringing these babies back! 💚

      @wildfern darn! That's really too bad. I use a mix of water, neam oil and soap otherwise, but I can't say for sure if it works against trips since I started using it after getting rid of them. It might be worth a try though, being more gentle than most commercial sprays.

    To be honest, my Silver Sword had issues with new leaves from the very beginning. They always got stuck in the sheaths and came out with rips in them. I kind of think it might just be a Silver Sword thing!

    Hi Fern! I have a question about propagating when a new leaf is coming in and hasn’t unfurled.. (can’t seem to find info anywhere)
    I want to propagate my PPP, but it has two new leaves which are taking their Sweet time. If you chop when they haven’t unfurled are you most likely to lose them? Or will they continue to grow..?
    Thank you so much! Love your videos!

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 года назад

      It could go either way, but I feel like it's always best to wait until the new leaves have fully emerged. You can risk them not reaching their full potential!

      I had thrips about 7 months ago and have not had one in over 5 :). My solution is to spray em down and remove the very affected leaves. Then put them in clear plastic bags for at least 40 days (life cycle of thrips). Spray em down every week when you water it with insecticide again. The plastic bag technique ensures that the thrips cannot jump to another plant and you will kill them all eventually. On top you will not have to cut them up and the plant will bounce back super quickly

      @@couch_philosoph3325 Yes I put them in a clear container and give them a shower/good spray frequently! Thank you, you gave me hope 😅

    • @couch_philosoph3325
      @couch_philosoph3325 2 года назад

      @@magalieleblanc25 that sounds great :) if you feel you cannot kill em at all in the end, a systemic insecticide worked wonders for my big plants that i couldn't isolate. You buy sticks and put them in the soil amd the plant will become immune. Wish you all the best 🥰

    Why not water propagate all the leaves and you could trim the damaged leaves after additional growth? And could the moss pole have thrips/eggs on it? (I’m not familiar with thrips)

    • @wildfern
      @wildfern  2 года назад

      I prefer wet stick propagating! It saves on space, and the leaves always come out super fresh & nice.
