In Nagano in 1998 Philip Boit from Kenya was competing in 10 km. He came last, but Dæhlie insisted on waiting for him to finish before they did the medal ceremony. Later Boit named his son Dæhlie Boit after Bjørn and they have been friends and kept in touch.

Number 8: Laila Schou Nilsen also won a bronze medal in Garmish Partenchirken in 1936 (the Olympics) and was the only one of the three on the podium not giving the Nazi salute, she was also world champion in skating twice and she set 6 world records in skating + much more. Many more could have just as easily been on that list, from the top of my head Petter Northug (cross-country), Ole Einar Bjørndalen (cross-country skiing with shooting, not an air gun like Tyler said, but a rifle), Lasse Kjus (downhill), Therese Johaug (cross-country), Espen Bredesen (jumping), Vegard Ulvang (cross-country), Stein Eriksen (downhill) who might have been just as famous in America as in Norway since he moved there after his athlete career and became a know ski coach and "ski missionary" at American ski resorts.

  • @pumagutten

This list was rather strange. I would say for Americans Stein Eriksen is the most famous Norwegian skier. Gold medal in the giant slalom in the Olympics 1952 and 3 gold medals in the World Championships in 1954, before he moved to the United States and became the most famous ski instructor. He died in Utah at the age of 88 in late December 2015.

Speaking of skijumpers, I feel like Espen Bredesen deserves a spot. Going from last place in the small hill and third last in the big hill in the ‘92 Albertville Olympics to winning gold and silver in the same events in the ‘94 Lillehammer games is quite a feat. He also won the ‘93/‘94 Four Hills Tournament and the ‘93/‘94 FIS World Cup that season.

The American ski jumping record is really good - 244,5 meters/ 802 feet set by Kevin Bickner. There's also a couple of hills in America. Ski jumping was introduced to America by Norwegian immigrants who helped build hills and even joined circuses to show the sport to people all over the country ☺

Ski shooting (biathlon) is not with an air rifle but a .22 cal. It used to be a .30 caliber, but travelling from country to country with thay kind of gun in inconvinient. In Europe there are countries with very lenient gun laws (e.g. Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Germany) but also countries where gun laws are extremely strict (Britain, Poland, Russia). In reality biathlon with an American M1 Garand or German M98 Mauser was fun as long as it lasted, but it got too complicated. Loud bangs from rifle volleys used to be a part of the charm. Now it seems the .22 LR is becoming a problem too. That is quite sad, actually. Biathlon with a laser pointer (as I have vitnessed) just isn’t my cup of tea.
