  • There are plenty of good reasons to visit the Louvre! So many works of art to discover in this fabulous museum that used to be a palace! It is the home of artworks in the world, such as Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa and Virgin of the Rocks. The museum also has a vast collection of sculptures (including Venus de Milo) and other objects from ancient civilizations. The Louvre was originally built as a fortress in 1190, but was reconstructed in the 16th century to serve as a royal palace. "Like many buildings, it was built and rebuilt over the years," said Tea Gudek Snajdar, an Amsterdam-based art historian, museum docent and a blogger at Culture Tourist. The Louvre collection consists of Paintings, Egyptian Antiquities, Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities, Near Eastern Antiquities, Decorative arts, Islamic arts, Graphic arts. the collections of the Louvre originated in the acquisitions of paintings and other artworks by the monarchs of the House of France. At the Palace of Fontainebleau, Francis collected art that would later be part of the Louvre's art collections, including Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.[21]
