- Morag Gamble of Our Permaculture Life (ourpermaculturelife.com) and Permaculture Education Institute (permacultureeducationinstitut...) presents a short film about how and why to save seeds. Here she demonstrates two simple ways to save seed from cucumber.
Over the past 100 years we have lost around 90% of edible plant varieties because we stopped saving local seeds. let's get into it again and relearn the art and wonder of seed saving.
Saving seeds from your garden can help to create more resilient, adapted seeds that are suited to your local climate, soil type and water availability.
Saving seeds of course is also much much cheaper than buying seeds every year and gives you the chance to trade, gift or sell something from your garden.

What great timing. I just got back from the start of our brand new local seed library! There were probably 20 people there. Saving seed is so important for food security. We can't have our food supply owned by a multinational corporation if we want to remain free people. Thanks for sharing. :-)
Oh, and I wanted to add that I am suggesting that instead of purchasing envelopes that the seed be distributed in Maia seed packets. I have examples of the folded seed packets that your daughter taught me through your videos.
Fantastic - I'll tell Maia. She'll be delighted.
Greetings from NE Ohio, USA on the shores of Lake Erie. :-)
Thank you for your videos, they are among the very best.
Thank you this tutorial is exactly what I was looking for and MORE! You caught my eye while looking for ways to harvest seeds from Rip Cucumbers and this was Perfect. Thank you again and now I'm off to learn more from you and your videos and web page. :)
Thank you

Great video for me. I love to save seeds. It is fun but do want to know the best way to do it. And yours teaching is valuable for me.
Thanks for sharing!
Can't stop watching your videos so inspiring
Thank you!
I tried the wet method last month. After a week or so, there was a terrible protein stench coming from the glass, so I'm going to dry the dry method this time!
Brilliant, thank you :)
Thank you very much. Very informative to tutorial.
fascinating
Interesting.
If I leave some on for seed will it slow growing newer ones?
Morag, your beautiful wrap arounds are so attractive. Do you make them or where if you wouldn't mind sharing do you get them..... thanks for sharing your way of life.
Thanks Candice. I love them too - just so practical for the warmer months here. Some of them I brought back with me from Indonesia when I was last there - exchanges for doing permaculture teaching. The one I am wearing in the next film I found in a little op shop for 50 cents! I've also sourced fabric from a local store that stocks fair trade fabrics.
Is it possible too eat the seeds that float ?
Hello Morag, thank you for this video.
You mentioned storage of the seeds, how do you store them properly?
In airtight glass, just in a plastic box with a lid, in room temperature or in the freezer or how do you do it?
Thank you.
Brian.
when they are dry, i put them in an airtight container in a cool place away from light. THink of what a seed needs to sprout - light, moisture and keep that away from them, and safe from things that might eat them too. I don't put mine in a freezer.
@@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife Thank you for your answer.
Hello. If i used dry method. How long should i wait before plant it back. Minimum day that i should wait? Thank you
Whenever the season is right in your area to start them growing cucumber?
What about using the seeds for making oil?
Do you experience any cross pollination with your cucmbers? Thanks for the video :-)
If I want to save the seeds for next year how would I do it? Do I simply place them in ziploc bags and bring them out once I need them?
Make sure they are super dry first. I tend to wrap them in paper then store them in an airtight jar.
Wait til completely yellow. Rinse. Dry. Floaters are bad. Sinkers are good.
Don't ask why, but how tall r u??
