- This is a simple way to improve the overall aesthetics of your property. However be sure not to put too much mulch, if any, against the trunk of the tree. Adding tree rings is a straightforward process and can really help define the look of your yard.
Root flair should not be covered.
@A. Sch. Good catch! I realized after recording, there was some mulch touching the base/root flare. We ended up pulling that mulch away from the root flare.
What is root flair ?
@@__Gus_ where the roots spread out from the trunk,, spreading out like a flare.
That actually started looking better as soon as you put the rope down, I'm definitely doing this.
The idea is nice, however- the flair of the tree base should never be covered. This will strangle the tree and cause it to die. The ring should go out to the drip line of the farthest branches. The mulch should be a thin amount that is deepest at drip line, and thinnest as it gets closer to the tree trunk . Never touching the trunk of the tree. And, never covering the natural flair of the tree. Thank you for reading this!
My arborist asked me to remove the mulch around the tree. He said, there should be nothing.
Well he is wrong. Trees do better if mulched at the right level.
@@Rocketman0407you're wrong, actually.
@Hazonko not at all. Mulching correctly around most trees are benificial just don't pile it up against the trunk or go really thick.
How do you think trees get nutrients in nature?
@@Rocketman0407I am an arborist.
I can’t tell you how many dead trees I remove because of disease and fungus from mulch installed at the base of the tree… install rocks instead.
The trees root system needs oxygen
@@stephenxburrage the question is then what kind of mulch did they use and how close to the tree was it put. Lastly what kind of climate was it done in and the depth.
Trees get mulched in nature all the time. So if done right it should be ok to do.
Frames the tree really nice!
Don’t put ANY mulch against the tree
In the forest, mulch goes against trees all the time as this is their natural behavior and nothing bad happens
"Use a hoe" is the best line ever
This looks like a tree ring circus... Nice work!
Much appreciated!
Looks good.
Thank you!
Planting tulip bulbs around the ring looks great in the Spring.
Yep, those bits sticking out bottom need to be open to the air, trees can die if u cover with grass etc
I like how that hose went perfectly around the dirt area, but he still needed the hose to trace it
Love the hose trick ❤❤❤
Thank you dude, I really appreciate this video 💜🤟👊😂😲
Ihr habt Hornspähne vergessen den wenn sich der mulch zersetzt entzieht er dem boden Stickstoff was das wachstum des baum s beeinträcht.
Some benefits for my Tree or just work for me?
Don’t mulch over the root flare.
Pine Fines is my favorite mulch.
I was super stoked on this video until they totally over covered (volcano) it
This in definitely not vulcano mulching
Why does the new mulch look so old or dry?
I put black mulch around the base of a fir tree for no other reason than for looks. Later when the tree got too large and was in the way for parking and egress I cut it down. I started digging up the mulch but over time it had turned into topsoil and inside were dozens of the biggest, most energetic earthworms I’ve ever seen.
As previously mentioned, the root flare should stay above ground. Getting the lawn away from your tree is generally a healthy thing to do for your tree. Make sure your sprinklers don't shoot up against your tree either. Many trees that thrive in arid climates will decline if they are over watered. If you cover the root flare and, or put a lawn around them, the roots will rot.
Why not a string line tied to the tree?
That is a good alternative to the water hose option!
Don't build up the soil around the base of the tree... You need to be able to see the root spread.
When I see these at houses I always assume the grass is dead there
everything in reading now says NOT to use mulch…
I mean no gas powered tools are a Beutiful moment for someone to enjoy the sacrifice of family and friends
Make sure not to research anything then teach people what not to do. Did you make your own mulch with a wood chipper?
Improve the aesthetics by ditching harmful grasses and using useful pretty native plants
How high do you need to be to think this looks good?
Fabulous 💍
No edging?
You certainly can, we opted for a natrual edge.
I always have done that to my trees but I always just do it with a weedeater and eyeballing it. I set the weedeater where it would dig into the dirt then I remove the weeds are grass from the dirt and smooth it out. That's how you do it when you don't have all the tools. It always has worked fine with me with the rake and weed eater
We had some time to burn one Saturday afternoon, so we opted for the more laborious method. Thanks for watching!
How much would u charge someone to do a tree like this
For a second I thought that the hose you
We’re holding was a part of your hand.
I was a bit creeped out.
Why not plant some perennials around the tree?
Beyoncé would be proud
This is wrong, they covered the root flair and that will cause rotting over time.
How does this look better than grass growing right up against the tree? It's better than that nasty dirt ring, but if the grass is scarce up against the tree... add more grass.
The grass competes with the tree roots for water. Not good for the tree.
Also easier to mow
Some trees are toxic to grass (walnut), some are simply too dense to allow enough sunlight.
You put too much mulch, you covered the root crown.
Good thing you had that rope
Too much mulch. Gonna choke that tree
It’s not a good idea to cover this tree which I think is a Pecan’s root flare
I love this but I have oak trees with giant roots. As beautiful as they are I hate them in my front yard.
What was the hose for
I wonder how many people who went out and did this choped a hole in their hose with the shovel 😂
ring is too small for the size of the tree. When they put hostas in these tiny rings, it looks like a clown neck ruffle lol
Find mulch of the tree your mulching
So I use my mum lol pmsl 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Stops you bumping into the tree with the mower..
I betcha don't need the hose 😉
I think it looked better before
That mulch you put down looks like crap
No fabric?
You don't put fabric under mulch. But I would have added Prene to the dirt to prevent weeds.
Don't use a ho, they're too expensive. Use a stiff metal rake.
Why?
You covered the flair and you are giving bad advice.
@Grow Plants we addressed some of the excess mulch after shooting. Also We did not cover the root flair with dirt. Keep in mind the before and after shots are different angles. What bad advice are we giving?
@@TheArtOfHomeownership you should delete this video and re-upload it with the correct way to edge a tree. Anyone watching this video and not reading the comments will be mislead.
@@Hamispeople Please elaborate on the "correct way" to edge a tree so the people reading the comments are informed.
@@Hamispeopleoh get off your high horse😂😂, you do yours and leave this video alone
Nitpicking
But in nature grass grows up the base of trees. And natural always looks best
Since nature doesn’t do this neither do I
In nature, grass is rarely healthy above a trees rootball, if there's any grass there at all.
@seanhazelwood3311 with evergreens because they shade the ground all tear round you don't get other plants growing . However, with most loose leaf deciduous trees, you do.
@@old.not.too.grumpy. Not thick and healthy. All of the trees on my property are deciduous. None of them had more than scraggly weeds growing beneath them. The same goes in the forest.
Won't the Hoes high hills get stuck.
Give a tree sinus
But what if your wife is busy?
Did landscaping for 20 years leave it natural first most all mulch has chemicals an dies in it if a tree needs a bed it makes its own like pine trees dont get suckered in to doing something cause thats what rich people do and i think its ugly
Bagged, colored mulch does, untreated does not.
Scraggly grass and weedeater marks on the tree trunk isn't ugly? Smh
Tree well. Not ring
grab a can of spray paint and and measuring tape that works as well and far more accurate
Can we just stop using mulch. I won't even service customers who have mulch near their property anymore. They won't be satisfied no matter what I do.
Maybe just let the natural plants n ecosystem exist instead? Save our planet
To much mulch? Like in the forest? 😂
Trees in the wilderness are all fake!
That does not improve the aesthetic of the garden.
Looks like the tree is killing the yard. No thanks
Come on, ho, i got some yard work for you.
So people purposely ignore the "Drip" line?
Pretty, but terrible for your tree
Cuz that's how they grow in nature? NOT
It's exactly how they grow in nature. The only difference is that the material he uses breaks down slower. In nature trees, self mulch with leafs.
Besides, why do you think how it is done in nature is always the best way? As an example, palm trees get bigger in a yard compared to in habitat.
😑😑😑😑😑😑
Just me I guess, but I'd rather just have my grass grow up to the base of the tree. That looks worse.
This is bad advice for the tree. Mound too close the tree. It had a flair that you covered. They grass yard is boring. Mulching trees with bark is a bad idea.
What are you talking about? I have seen people mulch fruit trees half a foot up the trunk for years. Not a single problem, and they produced a ton of fruit. It was in a drier climate, though.
@@Rocketman0407 I’ve seen ppl smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day and live to 90. They’re still bad for your health.
@@cgpcgp3239 he had a lot of trees though and the reason for high mulching was to improve his sandy soil which he had great sucess with.
You can break the rules in some instances if you know them. The worry of mulching too heavy is trunk rot and lack of oxygen. In the desert scenario it allmost never rained and the wood could easily breath so it was in fact benificial.
Looking at this video he seems to be in a wetter more temperate climate however the amount ot mulch going up the trunk is so little its negliable. Give it a few months and it will be at the "perfect" level.
@@Rocketman0407 high mound of mulch the touches tree bark to improve the soil makes no sense. you create a moat between the mulch and the tree.
@cgpcgp3239 makes perfect sense if the mulch touching the trunk does not create rot or the mulch gets too compact to starve the roots from.oxygen. he lived in the desert.
Booooo
