- Channel 7 Grand Final eve special hosted by Bruce McAvaney and Mike Sheahan looking back at the 1995 AFL season. From the video sleeve:
"Bruce McAvaney and Mike Sheehan formed two thirds of TV's most talked about program for the year - 'Talking Footy' - so why wouldn't they be assigned responsibility for taking us on a stroll through season 1995.
'That Was The Season That Was' incorporates the highs and the lows, the marks and goals, the hits and spills of the AFL's 1995 season.
Together, McAvaney and Sheahan rank the game's most significant achievers, at the same time looking at the players and issues which generated the headlines throughout the year.
All the action, all the drama, all the controversy which conspired to make this another unforgettable season is featured in football's favourite TV annual."
Night grand final happened in 2020
Yes for the afl premiership season
only because of Covid 19 restrictions.😉
You're a legend, putting these up.
Thank you.
As a Richmond supporter this was such an exciting year even though we fell short. John Northey and Stuart Maxfield departing for Brisbane and Sydney respectively put us back 10-15 years.
Most enjoyable to watch, the format used for this show in 1995 was the best and most interesting ever in my opinion.
Mike Sheahan "The Carlton v Geelong Grand Final will be the Grand Final of the 90's..."
that aged like a bag of goon left in the 40 degree sun
1995 was a good year for football. I was 8 Years Old. Lot of great games, and great players to watch. Really did capture my imagination as a lad
1995 was a great year for me to, i lost my viriginity to rose clark when i was 12 years old!!!
Soccer is the greatest sport on Earth and is massive in over 240 countries. Afl is big in 4 Australian States. Soccer will be the number 1 sport in Australia by 2050 ydggbb

38:32 - did Jeff Farmer foresee the current trend for handballing in footy?
38:41 Neil balme is thinking "that was some BS"
1:12:50 - wow they were talking about the night Grand Final back in 1995 lol
hi Anthony I was going to send u the tape but never got around it. I first saw this about 11years ago on vhs. loved it back then and still love it very much Special!

the games people play by joe south
39:54 this is why ron barassi is an member of the afl hall of fame as a legend
love the themes and music used in Sevens AFL coverage back then. very different now.
great comment, I always thought the same growing up

*note that Brereton's goal actually clearly missed since it passed behind the goal post and not in front of it*
and the game ended in a draw lmao
Carlton haven't won since...
… and yet, no team has got to a 17th premiership win yet, in that time; Essendon 1 Flag in that 29 years and Collingwood only 2. I would have thought the record that CARLTON first set (16 Flags) would’ve been overtaken by now.
Modra only managed 42 goals, Chris Grant only managed 38 goals. Also the "No Fat Chicks" sign at 12:46. Times have changed.
Love all that season minus the grand final
As much as I enjoyed watching That was the Season that was in the 90s as a kid, I honestly felt that when they stopped doing the round by round presentation and only went for this sort of presentation I felt it went downhill.
It was hard to watch the show in this format but still bearable.
Also they should not have talked about the Grand Final at the start thinking it was going to be the Grand Final of the 90s when in reality, it was a sad one sided game.
So I think a bit of editing would be needed so they would withhold talking anything about the GF because looking back at it now, it seems embarrassing.
Then again it is hard when you consider they were originally filming this on the night before the big game started.

Yeah I agree. This was the first year they did this 'random' format and doesn't make alot of sense.
They must of stopped these shows cause I haven't seen one of them in decades.
I need to complete my playlist (1978-2002).....1979, 1985, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 2000 and 2002. If anyone knows where any of these are can they please let me know. Many thanks.
Well you have the 3 min opening to it. As soon as you upload it in its entirity, then I will be very interested. Thanks.
actually there is NO 1979 or 1985 or 1986 or 1988 NOR 1989 that was the season that was at all cos i have a photographic memory
1995 racism was thought to be fixed? 2024 its still happening! 29 years we have not learnt a thing.
i used to love this show.
this show makes me miss Bruce hosting AFL shows. Talking Footy for example is not the same without him or the old format. personally I don't think look Darcy is a good host Sam McLure would be better.
2 years later ch 7 will have a look at the year divided it up it various categories from plays of the year to football politics and they have the countdown of the biggest upsets of the year and the best 10 games of 1997 H&A rounds and the last 2 segments before the grand final are awards and finals series

33:56 you can argue that *any* carlton blues loss in the 1995 H&A rounds was considered as an upset
59:45 Mike Sheahan is not impressed that sheedy calling the umps martians

Billy McFarlane I've corrected
I just got the 2002 one today in mail.
1:18:12 The New And Used
all that's missing now are the 2000 and 2002
at the end tag Craig Willis says Football Network Fox Footy has taken that over from 7. Amazing how far Bruce has come since then. since then 1995 no preseason cup comp and replaced with a community series and now there is talk of AFL X next year. a lot has changed in 22years since this was made. make me wonder
37:00 oh don't tell me he's kicked it
Lol Mike is such a dork.
amazing that back then there was talk of a night GF yet we still don't have one considering TV networks is 7 have paid millions if not billions and still no night GF. u would have to think it would have to happen if AFL want more money over the odds.
This year proved a night GF is not a good idea keep it at its traditional spot
12:47: Had to laugh at the No Fat Chicks sign in the North cheersquad. Try getting away with that one today....
and don't forget plays form the years vol 2
best season ever
mate. please upload .
If I find it I will.
