  • Why and how does the Pennsylvania Game Commission put radio collars on elk? Collared animals provide the data needed to estimate populations, understand habitat selection, and determine survival rates. The elk are sedated so they can be safely handled and fit with collars and it requires a lot of preparation, patience, and training. Radio collars are a valuable tool for wildlife managers. And three types of trapping elk are used: free darting, clover traps, and a corral trap. Follow PGC biologists as they use a corral trap to catch elk to learn more about their habitat usage.
