I guess I got lucky when I stayed Nusa Lembongan, while shippies was crowded most days. One morning I got up early to get a boat out to shiipwrecks but the fishing boats said no and told me to wait and watch. Some sets rolled in and they were closing out across the gap between razors and shipwreck so the boats couldn't get through the channel. so me and a mate decided to check out playgrounds despite the size of the swell and being a lowish tide. Holy smokes the beginner playgrounds become a barreling beast, just me and a mate on it for a couple of hours, until my leg rope snapped and I got sucked out to sea in the viscous currents that were happening with a big swell ... but that is a whole other story lol
I'm there now, fun waves with the learn to surfers and their guides sitting in the section. Caught my share with some rubbish bags and turd. Overall a stunning place under everyone's rubbish. Foods good if your 12 yo. 2/10
The current shippies shipwreck was a materials transport brage heading to Nusa Penida, got towed a bit too close to the reef during a massive storm about 1.5 to 2 years ago. I surfed it June last year when it still had its complete hull, it was making a bit of a refraction wave which added a different level of trickiness to time take offs from the main or wide peaks. I mostly boogie the right at playgrounds these days, very fun at about 4-6ft 2 hours after high tide, bit easier to get waves there when bigger because the kooks gotta hang wide haha
Ahhh ok!! Wow, crazy how it actually affected the wave!! Thanks for the backstory... Sick! I can only imagine how fun that waves gets on the biggest swells!!
Been there a couple of times. First time I was there, there was no electricity until 4 in the afternoon (about 25 years ago) and everything was quiet. But like every nice spot, I guess it gets discovered and more and more crowded. Snorkeling around nusa penida (island next to it) is awesome.
My trip there was 1999 from Maui…I had Shipwrecks kinda To my self…and my Aussie buddy …a few Japanese surfers..but there were not charging..it was so cool!
Went there about 10 years ago. Playgrounds was chest high and only 4 others apart from me out. Sadly they were Brazilian and worked as a team to keep me off every single wave that came through and dropped in on every wave that i had priority for
Love the video and your channel Dan! You mentioned teaching english online, did you take a TEFL course? Do you have any advice about finding an online job that is similar? Thanks :)
Crowded spot is just the results of all the video speaking about the quality of life and surf In Nusa Lembongan. And you are just one more people to speak about this island . And this is the high season now, In January there is less people.
Hey Rob! I never tried to rent boards here, but you can definitely get mals and soft tops. Not sure about performance shortboards! I'd suggest grabbing something on mainland Bali if you're planning on surfing a lot :))
Last surfed there in 2018, wasn't crowded. Think there was a ship wreck there years ago, when I was there there wasn't anything there, but I think 2 years ago or so another ship got wrecked on the same spot haha
I was there for a month last year. Crowded. I'd always do the paddle out as well and I remember one morning paddling out before light, getting out, only 2 people, caught one wave and as in paddling back 3 boat loads of people got dropped off. Also heaps of euro kooks. Beautiful place though. If you touch the reef, you'll know about it!
This area was a super bonus for my better half the snorkeling was simply amazing In the past twenty years it's just gotten worse Sumatra is a much better option hands down Thanks for sharing as always my friend Dan The Man Be well and Keep The Epic honest content coming Greatly Appreciated My Friend Be Well 👍🤙
Yeah an epic family/couples place for sure!! But yeah I imagine there are parts of Sumatra that are amazingly beautiful! Stoked you enjoyed this one :))
First time i was there was in 2001 there was nothing, and the island survived o seaweeds that was all over the reef, and the smell was not nice. But a paradise anyway, last information i got in 2015/16 was that the shipwreck was sold for the japaneses, that was taking that out of there
Couldn’t never go back looks like a shitfight now .Spent so much time there in the late 80s and 90s . Shippies was a heavy hollow wave the wave i remember it and when it was pretty solid you’d get sucked out into the impact zone always No one surfed razors and lassos was the jewel of the island . Just the old little boats one motor having to cruise up the coast an hour if the tide was cranking to slip across the channel , the locals spuhan up getting sea sick if there was swell . Mainski and Agungs the main places along with a couple of others gee those were the days
Thanks Dan.. Your videos are very informative.. How long have you been teaching english for? My partner is looking at getting her tefl. How much money do you make on average per month and do you make enough to sustain your travels?
Hey mate!! Thank you so much and I've been doing it on and off for about three years! It's only really a part time job for me now as I do freelance writing and RUclips mainly (which takes up most of my time!! But with a TEFL Course and working for a couple different companies you can definitely do it full time :))
I've been following you videos, and it´s funny tho, because i've been to some of these places, and had different experiences. I remember surfing in Shipwrecks with maybe 5/10 other guys out there, glassy conditions, 3/4 ft super clean for like 2 straight hours... same thing in, Razors and Lacerations... back in 2012... :) Do they still have those crazy farms underwater? We used to get a small boat to takes us out, and he had to go really slow to cross that farms. I'm always thinking about going back to Lembongan, but i can see that this perfect paradise has been discovered already!!! eheheheh 🤙 🤙
Hey mate!! Yeah I guess we all have our own unique experiences at these crowded spots! And yes, still got to paddle through the seaweed farms!! And loads of boats in operation, defo nothing secret about it haha!!
You reckon crowds might drop off in October? I was thinking of headin over there about the 15th, hoping the off season would keep some away. Did you talk to locals about that at all?
Possibly! !I know Bali gets a little less crowded around then, but not sure about Lombok! I'd say it can't get worse crowds-wise though, so I think you're choosing a wicked time to go!!
personally found shipwrecks to be the most frustrating wave crowdwise ive ever surfed indo n aus, worse than uluwatu for sure. 30+ people on a tight takeoff spot for a B grade wave. 15 people paddling for each wave
Only been once and beautiful though it is I believe it is overrated. So tide dependent that only a few hours in the cycle get good and everybody on them. Playgrounds was ridiculous, so many people fighting to get into waves over shallow coral.
These are very informative videos. I would like to know how you handle your money security will staying in the various hostels around the world? I'm always worried about my wallet while I am out surfing, as some of these places don't have lock boxes.
Thank you!! To be honest, I'm very relaxed (probably too much so) when it comes to that. If I have my own room, I just keep it in there, and I normally do the same in hostels. Otherwise I'd ask reception to hold onto your passport/wallet etc, if there is no safe :)
Pretty much the only 'whats it actually like to surf in Bali' explanatory vid I've ever found. Most are just a wankery of totally sick brah yeew! goons telling you nothing about the breaks, the place or the crowds.
social media such an evil tool. went there only 5 years ago surfed shippy's with my mate just 2 of us out for 3 hours 4-6ft. then you get guys like this. Pathetic. well i guess i'll just watch his vids and never go to any of the spots he covers.
When the surf is bad go snorkelling, its ALWAYS GOOD.😊✌🏻
Yep AMAZING!!

Hey Brett!! Mate, that sound sick! Sounds like you scored!! But that current doesn't sound fun hahah!!
I'm there now, fun waves with the learn to surfers and their guides sitting in the section. Caught my share with some rubbish bags and turd. Overall a stunning place under everyone's rubbish. Foods good if your 12 yo. 2/10
Great video, thanks!
I'm there next week with the wife! can't wait.
hoping to bring the kids as well next time.
Cheers for the insight brother 💪🏽

Wow!! Bet it was wild back then! And gotta venture a long way to have that experience nowadays haha!!
Love the channel and great information Dan!
Thank you so much!!
lived there for year and a half surfing and spearfishing, in South Mexico now having dreams about that crystal clear water, lol. Nice vids.
Epic!! I mean South Mex is pretty sick also, but yeah not many places with as clear water as Lembongan!
How was the spearfishing?
My trip there was 1999 from Maui…I had Shipwrecks kinda To my self…and my Aussie buddy …a few Japanese surfers..but there were not charging..it was so cool!

Cheers bro should have watched before getting here actually! Great info 👍
Thanks for the details! These are all the things I want to know about places. Tides, crowds, paddle-out etc - appreciate it!
Hey Kristie!! Stoked you found it helpful :)
The whole Indo thing is bucket list vibes for me, thanks for the info bro and the way you laid it out

Sucks when you've got a team working against you hahah!!
Dirty Brazzo pack. Nothing worse. Bell-ends.
Love the video and your channel Dan! You mentioned teaching english online, did you take a TEFL course? Do you have any advice about finding an online job that is similar? Thanks :)
Just talking for a couple hours and making money, sounds like a super fun job. Surfers dream.

Hey mate!! Well I guess so, but if I tell everyone who crowed it is, maybe less people will go??
Epic video, coming in a couple weeks can't wait😊😊
Epic!! Hope you get some waves :)
Lembongan is so rad
Surfed Ship wrecks in 2016, bugger all people and pumping barrels...things have changed by the sounds of it. There was no crane back then.
How is it for surfboard rentals? For advanced surfers ? Or many 2nd hand boards for sale? Thanks
Hey Rob! I never tried to rent boards here, but you can definitely get mals and soft tops. Not sure about performance shortboards! I'd suggest grabbing something on mainland Bali if you're planning on surfing a lot :))
Is there a ferry that we can get on with our scooters?
Great clip Dan
Hahaha as i sit on Lembogan right now i stumble across this :)
Hahaha Sick!!
Love those types of videos 🫶
Stoked you like them Kevin!! :)

@@neal4601 yea hate how surfing has become popular in Europe and around the world, need surfing to be uncool again hahah
From a kiwi
Surfings been popular in Europe since the 60’s mate
Hahah at least you got a couple before hand!! And yeah the reef is well gnarly!!

Thank you!! Yea shoulda added that in! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Hi Dan, do you know of any good beginners surf camp in Nusa?

Wow!! bet it was pretty remote (wild west) Indo back then!! Ahhh ok, thanks for the info :)

Shipwrecks can be good on the mid tide, less people as they assume it’s too shallow
Yeah!! Good point actually, I did get a few waves when it was lower sometimes!!
I've been following you videos, and it´s funny tho, because i've been to some of these places, and had different experiences.

I think the boat crew said the crane was bought in to dredge the channel where Rockies boats moor but didn’t make it there
Ahhh ok!! That makes sense!
Was a shipwreck there back in the 70s hence the name which has existed all these years, was v v primitive back then
last time i went there we had to walk through seaweed farms on the way out
Yep!! Still do, pretty unique hahah. At high tide you can just about paddle over the top of them!
@@DanHarmon123 sick. were they getting rid of the wreck or something? i'm talking a long time ago i haven't been for so long

Haha!! Glad it's not just me who thought that!! Its' insane!!
Triple that and you have Noosa!
You see alot of take off face plants into the playgrounds reef as the tide drops out. Quite dangerous for begginers.
Yeah for sure!! As that tide drops its well gnarly!!
Only been once and beautiful though it is I believe it is overrated. So tide dependent that only a few hours in the cycle get good and everybody on them. Playgrounds was ridiculous, so many people fighting to get into waves over shallow coral.
Yeah totally agree!! Waves are fun but not worth the hassle! And yeah only being able to surf a few hours of the day doesn’t help!
Can you longboard in lembongan
On small days at Playgrounds and Lacerations would be epic for longboarders!!
Sick vid
Thank you!!
Dan is living his best life.
