Many who have OCD struggle with the fear of staring at someone’s private areas. Some may just feel annoyed and distressed because they actually are doing it. Whether it’s in a TV show or in person. They start avoiding places because they don’t want to have to take the time and effort to avoid staring or looking. It’s not something they want to do, so of course, the brain is going to urge them to do it or throw out threats. Let’s go through what it looks like and how to stop staring.

This was a theme for me for a while. I’ve been diagnosed with OCD since 2005 but just thought it was the rumination, orderliness, contamination - stereotypical things. Only last year did I learn that intrusive thoughts and relationship to trich/BFRB, and things like being afraid I was staring at someone inappropriately were related.
Learning that OCD was ego dystonic and intentionally picking things that were the opposite of my values was a game changer - I thought before that I thought I must be an awful person to be having all of these thoughts. Now I’m just like “oh, that’s just an OCD thought,” don’t attach any worth to it, and move on.

My ocd has made me look to “check” to make sure I’m not attracted certain things. Now, through ERP, I KNOW I’m not attracted to these things I still have urges that I can’t resist to look. Then ocd tells me I only looked because I wanted to. It’s so distressing and confusing to live with ocd.

I'm turning 22 this year and this is something I've been struggling with for most of my life. Since I was a teenager I had a bad experience that's made me feel ashamed and guilty for having the urge to look at women's bodies and I assumed all women secretly hate me because of it. Even now when I have lots of women friends who feel comfortable around me if they're wearing revealing clothing I'm terrified of offending them to the point of outright avoiding looking at them even when facing directly towards them. I fear that I'll accidentally glance at their chest and they'll despise me afterwards and never want to speak to me again. I prided myself on being a good and kind person but I always saw this as a character flaw. Of proof that I'm a bad person no matter what I do or how hard I try. I'm so glad I've found this and that I'm not alone in this. I want to be respectful to women but I don't want to hate myself while doing it.

See I have suffered from the same problem since 2022 and from 4-5 months I have solved it 90 percent. So what I did was I consulted a psychiatrist and told him that I am suffering from ocd, he gave me some medicines I took medicines for some 3-4 months after that I had no money left with me but I had learned to manage the problem almost 90 percent so see if you are studying in school or college you need to sit on the first bench and if someone is on your left then cover your corner of the left eye with your left hand and vice versa while walking on the streets you can cover some part of the eye or can run and cross the person in front of you. So you have to create your own ways to get rid of the problem. Hope this helps😊

First and foremost all I can say is wow to be able to find this type of information where I don't feel so alone and perverted from having this problem that I find out others thousands of people share the same problem and that it's an anxiety related issue I am not homosexual nor am I a weirdo but I have struggled with this for quite some time as I am now an adult all the way back from my teenage years of looking at people's body parts mostly women due to the fact that women are attractive when they are in certain outfits or just have that type of figure the way most women dress nowadays exposing a lot but then at times just a casual dresser it's a habit it's like a a habit of just something that happens even when I don't want it to happen. I feel bad about it because I think of others and myself and I wouldn't want someone else to be looking at my body parts at the same time I believe it comes from self confidence of my silent shape I've always wanted to be bigger and for some reason I compare myself my body shaped to others especially in the gym or one with an athletic figure. I could go on and on of this topic and to realize it's a psychological struggle. It does not bother me to the point of being antisocial but it is a struggle when I'm talking with someone eye to eye face to face, I do my best too keep my attention straight but as usual it wonders in between. I've even considered to go to a nudist beach to be in the atmosphere I've never been in of everyone just being open and laid back where everything is exposed versus covered. I've never been one to like tucking in shirts where your antibody parts reflect through your clothing, if shaped awkwardly especially, I felt so weird thinking this but I realizing now discovering this it's not just me. Out of nowhere today I just decided to look up why I stare at body parts to see what I connect with the world and here we are......

Facing the anxeity : Gradually staying the social anxeity situations (begin with shorter duration and try to stay in that situation while slowing down everything you do , and go to a different environment for things to clam down) 3. Exercise (Allowing the body to move and stretch regularly in a relax manner makes a huge difference) 4. Be Brave and give time for the pattern to change. 5. Take a walk in nature once a while.
It will take time for social anxeity to change , and the pattern will try to crawl back from time to time , and time passes by , things will get better.

I have an extreme problem with staring especially when it comes to attractive people or interesting people. I’m always getting impulses to stare but I know that many neurotypical people see it as rude or a form of internal judgment but that’s not true. When I stare at people it’s usually because something about them interests me or attracts me. I wish I just could stare at people without seeming like a creep or rude. For some reason I also constantly have an impulse to stare at peoples groin‘s butts and breasts. Sadly in the Neurotypical world can be seen as creepy. Also when it comes to people who look different like people with disabilities or extremely obese people. I don’t hate them at all and neither am I bothered by them But some people take steering personally and I’ve heard many people especially obese people and people with disabilities expressed that staring makes them feel like they’re being judged and if they see it as rude. I’m not a creep or rude I’m just autistic and the urges are strong to stare.

i used to have this ocd, until i came up with something.
"if you look at people's private parts they're definitely gonna know"
what i did was i started devaluating this sentence with actually looking at people's private parts
BUT i would use the moments they weren't looking and i wouldn't stare to not make it obvious.
so try this, if you got this ocd whenever in your life, tell yourself that you HAVE to look at people's private parts. but only do it when it's not obvious and if you're having a conversation and this ocd kicks in tell yourself that i will look, but they're looking at me rn let me find the right time to do it. and then actually do it...
it's like a bitter medicine but it worked and over a time i actually forgot i had this ocd and the symptoms stopped.
and whenever it starts again i force myself to do this and it works...
    (and just to add something.
if you feel bad about looking at people's private parts (like i did) i started sorting my thoughts in two categories. "active" and "passive" i call them.
so an active thought is when I'm thinking about something by my own will.
and passive is when my mind brings up thoughts by itself.
the difference is when you actively want to look at people's private parts you don't feel like you're under a pressure or anxious and...
that's passive thinking and when you want to push those thoughts away they'll only get stronger and you will feel more anxious.)

The problem with this is that there are consequences to staring at private parts. If you let go, and stop caring, it’s not like it was all in your head. Many people will give you a dirty look , or get in a staring war with you, or maybe say something nasty or even say that you made them uncomfortable and they want you to stop, or just comment on what you’re doing, or get you fired from a job or reported to the police for sexual harassment .
It’s bullshit. Yes, police will consider a bullshit claim like staring. And in a job, it doesn’t matter whether it’s valid or not, you will be fired. So you can get in trouble regardless. Nothing serious will probably happen, but you might have to fight a complaint or explain what happened . And then you realize, okay, back to square one. I have to make sure I don’t stare at people.

Hi Nathan. Hope that all is well. Thanks for creating this channel and dedicating your time to helping others, your assistance is truly invaluable!
I have been dealing with HOCD (SO-OCD) for about 2.5 years now, only found out what was wrong with me at the beginning of 2020. I have been applying the relevant methods to manage the OCD, I have had good results. I have reduced the panic attacks and levels of anxiety.
However there is one compulsion that still persists. I tend to "blush" or get awkward facial expressions around any gay topics, interactions with males, or speaking about anything male related. I reckon that it started by having a fear of my thoughts being transparent (as usual, I thought that they were "real"), and I would perform a compulsion by trying to hide my "emotions" through attempting to control my facial expressions. Now the "blushing" just happens automatically. I'm a heart-on-my-sleeve type of guy.
For financial reasons, I do not have access to a health professional or medication.
Thanks again for everything. Stay safe and take care.

I've been struggling w this for like 2 years. I noticed it started with me looking at the security guards crotch, then it passed to also staring my manager. I don't know where this came from but I'll assume is from being molested. I've suppressed this for the longest time and 4 years ago I started getting glimpses of all the shit that happened to me growing up. I had a mental breakdown that resulted in badly cutting myself (I've always self harmed but this one was way too deep) and ended up in the ward. I started some therapy but I was inconsistent. When I was ready to talk to my therapist about this my work insurance lapsed so I stop treatment altogether. This staring bs is ruining me. I work at a clinic there is a trigger since I wake up until I go to bed. I'm tired of it all. I wish I can master myself or at least be able to deal better with this. Too much people have been noticing. The anxiety of actually doing what the person recommends in the video towers over me even if I look on the tv I feel so disgusted w myself. Please God help me.

i have a question for us all in this comment section.
have you dropped lsd or shrooms and did you experience this starring problem after?
    smoke pot?
wondering if there is any possible correlation.
