My mother achieved Life Master rating in Bridge three times. She had boxes full of decks of cards she had given to her in tournaments and by friends etc, that she never used. She didn't care about fancy cards, she just wanted to play Bridge. Seems like a healthy attitude for chess players also.
@@applescruff1969 People don't buy expensive chess sets to play on. They buy them because they look cool. I've spent almost 500 euro on a chess set because it's gorgeous. But my 20 euro wooden chess set plays chess the exact same
My dad bought me an Onyx chess set for Christmas for a second I thought it was a normal chess set and then he said “that is not a normal chess set it’s fragile so be careful with it” he got it from Mexico then I searched up fragile chess sets and I found the same chess set but different color, so I searched up onyx chess set and I realized that it’s very expensive and fragile :^
I wouldn't call any of these a "best" chess set. They're all superficially flashy and appealing only to people who've never played with a truly good set.
@@Luna-ol2qy [ I wrote a long reply hours ago that has somehow vanished, so I've had to reconstruct it below! ] The answer depends greatly on many factors: how much do you want to spend? Plastic or wood? Rough treatment or treasured art treatment? It just so happens that the set shown at the very beginning of this video is actually a great one! But it's expensive, starting at $380. There's also a much cheaper plastic version with a not-so great folding cardboard board for only $32, but I'd buy it from chesshouse.com instead since I'm in the US, not Europe. You can get a very well-made and heavy plastic set with an indestructible silicone board in a nice box for $60 - the "Best Chess Set Ever XL - Quadruple Weight 4X Pieces" from www.bestchesssetever.com/collections/chess-sets/products/quadruple-weighted-pieces-black-board, but Amazon also has it and you can't beat their shipping: www.amazon.com/dp/B00CDFTYJ8 The House of Staunton sells lots of high quality sets, both plastic and wood, for a huge range of prices, but many of the cheaper (
Also something I’ve noticed, if they advertise the board with black on the bottom right square instead of white, then the board is sideways and they most likely can’t be trustworthy. Sometimes I like looking up chess boards and counting how many have made this mistake. Also although I love Ralph Lauren, they sell a chess set for thousands of dollars with the black on the right, reviews saying it’s too small, and that the pieces are easily prone to falling over
"In most wood sets, the king is over 4" long." Uh, no, tournament kings are 3.75" in height. This isn't a "Best Chess Set" list, it's a "Here's some chess sets we liked" list. Good gods.
1:18 That knight's an absolute dog. 1:26 It looks there as if the pieces are too small for the board. 1:29 The *what* design? If you mean Staunton, it's pronounced Staunton, and no way are those pieces Staunton, especially the knights.
I have the Harry Potter set and wish it was more like in the movie. I added weights in the hollow area on the base of each piece and it improved the feeling alot.
Disappointed that nearly the whole video consists of still images. If I want to assess how playable a chess set is then showing its use in a game would have been much better. Also a lot more entertaining to watch.
Don't say you reviewed something on your audiences behalf. A review is an opinion piece, you can't substitute YOUR opinion on my behalf. Other than that, thanks for the vid! Looking for a good new chess set.
I have it it’s great just wish it was weighted the pieces are too light and airy for me however it’s meant to be light for travel so get what you pay for I recommend it
@@Luna-ol2qy If you mean a good "tournament" chess set that strong players use in competition I would suggest a standard plastic weighted Staunton plastic or wooden pieces with 3.5 - 4 inch kings, and a vinyl roll up board with 2.25 - 2.5 inch green and white squares. Chesshouse or the United States Chess Federation carry a number of these. :)
I wouldn’t say clown sets, a chess board doesn’t need to be tournament regulations. What’s wrong with have a beautiful set, a work of art, same as the game 🤨

"chess is one of the best games to play to improve thinking skills, concentration, and awareness."
My rating begs to differ.
you understand the game but you lack knowledge ;)
my 200 sitting in the corner like😮
Ahhh yes, because the top chess set is a checker set and a marble set

I use a $20 wooden board I bought at Target 5 years ago. Spending $100+ on a chess board just seems ridiculous to me.

Agreed. And if the narrator won't tell us the actual dimensions, then seeing a hand holding a piece would at least give us a rough idea.

If you plan to make another video like this one for 2025, I suggest you include a Chessforblitz set, which is the best.
Harry Potter pawns have stability issues. The inside is hollow. Fill and glue cardboard and felt to base. To stabilize the piece.
Are you going to do the same review for 2023?
Who came here after watching the Queen's Gambit ?
I guess no one did.
Nice
Now do a video for Arimaa sets

I have number 7. It's great, but I think the pieces are a bit too small.

Beautiful Chess set depends on two things: queens crown and knight. I saw nice sets but failed bigtime on this two.
I play chess with my brother and this video is PERFECT. Thank you so much
