Worked for the cable company in NYC when I met her never let on I knew who she was until I was done. Left out and tossed my hat. Left her laughing just as she did us. Really classy lady.
I would have loved to met her, I’ve watched most of the Dick van Dyke shows lately and currently watching MTM shows. Nostalgia is so lovingly painful, all you can do is smile.
I'm listening to this song and crying, So beautiful. I had never heard the full version before. Mary died today and I'm so sad. We loved you Mary and you were so much a part of our lives. You made it, sweetie. You really made it.
Absolutely beautiful version, the original. Its been 4 months since MTM passed away and listening to this has me quite weepy all over again... big part of my childhood that show was. She was amazing.
Sorry Robyn! I'm on a library computer, and I guess Glenn jones was the last person logged in,but I just logged in under my name and it's still showing his,so I just wanted to apologize for the mix-up. I hope I haven't caused any problem. And it it a beautiful song. Check Mary out in the movie "Ordinary People".
I once had the Sonny Curtis album in the 1980s. Met him backstage at a late 1980s Ronnie Milsap concert, Crickets reunion opened for Milsap. Knew he'd also co-wrote "I Fought the Law" . Great meeting him as well as Jerry and Joe from the original Crickets. All were classy, down to earth fellas.
The "Who can turn the world on with her smile" verse was added in the second season, with the phrase "You might just" replaced with "you're gonna..." The producers obviously felt, after the first season, that Mary had, more or less "made it", so Sonny was notified to modify the lyrics to reflect this.
Mary, you gave me and all Canadians many decades of entertainment and laughter, for which I will always be thankful for. R.I.P. I will toss my hat in the air for you!!
Fun fact: One of the original lyrics was changed to this version before the premier of the MTM Show Pilot. The part: Girl this time you’re all alone. The original: Girl you’ll be so far from home. If you YT search the fall 1970 MTM Show preview, you can hear the original lyric before it was changed.
I had a huge crush on Mary Tyler Moore as a young boy of 10 years of age. She was a beautiful actress and as a person. This song touches my heart and I see her face every time I hear it. Rest in Peace in Heaven. Loved her show on Friday nights. Such a simple time and the World misses her. Angel in Heaven now for eternity. C. H. Louisville KY.
Thank you from the concubines of the heart Vaughn Salem. I see your taste is like mine and I really cherish alllll the good memories of a much simplified and untechnical life we grew up in. Much love and peace and blessings to you, steve
unkulmark I aint kidding, but i met Sonny Curtis on the Bobby Vee Meets The Crickets tour in Birkenhead in 1962. I got into the dressing room, &&&&&, He played I Fought The Law 4 Me. He had just written it. He gave me his Plectrum... I wrote to him, & i still have the letter he wrote back to me......... a great guy
This song and the Mary Tylor Moore show showed me that I could be anything I wanted to be. I watched this show from the time I was 9 years old until it went into syndication. I wanted to move to Minneapolis and throw my hat up in the air.
Truly wonderful woman who will be missed she provided so much joy in her rolls of Laura petrie on the Dick Van Dyke show and of course Mary Richards and the game were phenomenal lovely people who just made you laugh so hard God-bless you Mary hope you're in heaven with angels
Though I watched the reruns of this show, this show helped me through high school making me feel better every time I felt better. I love Mary Tyler Moore so much for her roles in all the characters she played because I can relate to her and her characters so much. Mary Tyler Moore will always me my role model
The whole world is grieving Mary Tylor Moore, s death...R.I.P. Mary you were the very best. Were all missing you beautiful girl...You made us laugh ....You made us cry....It is not funny anymore ...R.I.P. Mary ...You were the very best beautiful girl...We all loved you ....
Never heard the complete song before, I like this version a lot. Grew up with MTM like so many others, she will be missed. Yes she made it after all, right into all our hearts! RIP
thank you for posting this song. thank you MTM for living and participating in DVD show & MTM show. every time we'd visit my grandparents..it must have been Sunday nights.Mary Tyler Moore then Newhart show. like clockwork. would be on. in that regard..this show bridged gap..it portrayed younger generation to older generation. albiet in warped..purified Hollywood manner. 'bowl of ice cream, couple of taffy cookies while I watched Mary Tyler Moore..and hope to stay awake til nine and watch Night Gallery-without falling asleep and wetting my grandfolks couch again.like last Sunday.'
I always loved the scene with Lou Grant and Mary Richards Lou told Mary you got spunk Mary thanked him Lou replies I hate spunk great television memories they don't make them like that any more
I miss her too, so much this song reminds me that there is a time for everyone. I am after years of abuse free from but till recent FINALLY FINALLY realizing just like Mary ""who I adored" that it's finally "time to do some living & let someone else do some giving". It's been only 4years & I still miss growing up watching her throw up her hat in joy 🥰 🥲
You're right on Mrs L. That's the most dynamic, memorable part of the video - her tossing her hat into the air. Like a "don't give a damn" fling! Super music, actress, comedian and all-around great Lady!!
This is incredible posting! Ever since I found the radio post with this song, I bid on this 45 on eBay a week ago, and lost the auction thinking I was never going to hear a clean version. All of a sudden, 2 people post it! This is the clearest version I have heard. I like it so much better then the 1980 release. It's softer and sweeter, like Mary herself! It is interesting the the arrangement is sort of a combination of the 1st and 2nd season's themes. A transitional recording. Thank you.
The song changed from the first year.... it started " how will you make it on your own" to " who can turn the world on with her smile"....... either version is classic and is one of the best TV theme songs ever.
Yes MTM wanted a more empowering lyric. Instead of you ‘might make it’ to You’re going to make it … Prefer the uptempo version on the show but it’s an iconic theme. ❤
Who can turn the world on with her smile? Who can take a nothing day And suddenly make it all seem worthwhile? Well it's you, girl, and you should know it With each glance and every little movement you show it Love is all around no need to fake it You can have the town, why don't you take it You're gonna make it after all Love is all around no need to fake it You can have the town, why don't you take it You're gonna make it after all How will you make it on your own? Such a beautiful story! Thank you for sharing! :)
Great Story!
What a great idea/story! A memory of making her laugh! That's so awesome!
I would have loved to met her, I’ve watched most of the Dick van Dyke shows lately and currently watching MTM shows. Nostalgia is so lovingly painful, all you can do is smile.
Eddie - a really nice story. thanks for sharing
I'm listening to this song and crying, So beautiful. I had never heard the full version before. Mary died today and I'm so sad. We loved you Mary and you were so much a part of our lives. You made it, sweetie. You really made it.
She was part of my childhood, growing up from an elementary school child to high school. I loved her so much.
Absolutely beautiful version, the original. Its been 4 months since MTM passed away and listening to this has me quite weepy all over again... big part of my childhood that show was. She was amazing.
Nedley, can hand me a Kleenex? I feel the exact same way. We loved Mary and always will.
Nedley Meyers great post thanks
Nedley Meyers A very good post Nedley. From Australia 🇦🇺
Wonderful song. Takes me straight back to 1970.
Our Mary in her 1970 Mustang, an image I'll always have.
RIP Mary Tyler Moore. What a beautiful song.
You've got spunk Robyn! I like spunk!
Sorry Robyn! I'm on a library computer, and I guess Glenn jones was the last person logged in,but I just logged in under my name and it's still showing his,so I just wanted to apologize for the mix-up. That's okay, haha :) Will do.
She's young and have spunk. when you get old like me, it turns into moxie! RIP MARY. Every female connected to the song and to you.
This is closer to the first season theme used - it was my favorite with the closing saxophones.
Suddenly I'm noticing that I cry when this song comes on. 😔 😢
Certainly one of the best -- if not the best -- TV theme songs ever created, albeit at a slower tempo than on the show itself. Thanks, Sonny!
The comedy world is dark this week. I throw my hat in the air for you, Mary. You made it after all. Rest in eternal peace.
Here during the pandemic, looking forward to better days ahead!🧡
1:23 "That sexy look will do wonders for you". Wish they used that on the show!
The "Who can turn the world on with her smile" verse was added in the second season, with the phrase "You might just" replaced with "you're gonna..." The producers obviously felt, after the first season, that Mary had, more or less "made it", so Sonny was notified to modify the lyrics to reflect this.
just found out that there's two sets of lyrics to this!
What a classy lady. She will be missed.
Probably the best opening song for any television show ever!
I agree
Mary, you gave me and all Canadians many decades of entertainment and laughter, for which I will always be thankful for. R.I.P. I will toss my hat in the air for you!!
one of the best songs ever
I love Sonny's voice- so rich and mellow.
Throws hat up in the air, bravo! MEOW!
Perfect song for The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Couldn't have been better.
Big big fan of Sonny and Buddy and the Crickets,I love this song just as i have all there songs.
Fun fact: One of the original lyrics was changed to this version before the premier of the MTM Show Pilot.

Can you believe the breadth of this man's talent!!?
My first crush. She was always so beautiful. I always liked that she was around in the world somewhere. Now my girl is gone.
This song and the Mary Tylor Moore show showed me that I could be anything I wanted to be. I watched this show from the time I was 9 years old until it went into syndication. I wanted to move to Minneapolis and throw my hat up in the air.

She was such a sweet kind lady. Even in the end she was nice to folks and did not become jaded like other entertainers have...

He should sing it on the Emmy's as a tribute to Mary
This theme and that girl theme were my two favorite TV themes🎉
Wow what a find and treasure
1970 was a good year for a 1 yr old boy that I was.
R.I.P.: Mary Tyler Moore
To think, I actually grew up watching her.
My God MTM was perfection personified. She wanted to continue the show for a few more seasons. What a shame it didn’t happen.
Sonny Curtis is from Meadow ,Texas back in the 50s he was a band mate with his good friend Buddy Holly the man is a genius as was Mary Tyler Moore .

Thank you for posting and sharing this beautiful and classic song! This is the first time I ever heard all the verses! I was born in 1978.
This reminds me of someone else who did this kind of style of country.
Beautiful rendition!
Became a widow 5 years ago..be hard. I remember May Tylor Moore and this song. Hope!
+Debi Long Sorry for your loss......

Fantastic to find the whole song! TY
always have loved that song ! thank you so much for posting this,.
The song changed from the first year.... it started " how will you make it on your own" to " who can turn the world on with her smile"....... either version is classic and is one of the best TV theme songs ever.
Steve Schneiderman I agree, there's also a country version Sonny recorded around 1980 that's good too
Yes MTM wanted a more empowering lyric. Instead of you ‘might make it’ to You’re going to make it …

Who can turn the world on with her smile?

Fun fact:
CBS sped up the recording by 10% for the TV show.
i always liked to hear sonny curtis
Awesome sauce. Great find. Takes me back to my Mod days. I appreciate you. Thankyouverymuch from L.A California.

BoyJohn: You've come up with a few things I've had on my list, but never thought I'd come across. Unbelievable. Thank you.
It brings back memories of my youth...
Best theme song for a TV show ever.
Buongiorno Monica Di Simone e buona domenica
thanks, sonny
i like it and i was listening for the lines that are used in the show's opening and all i recognized was the chorus
best version thanks for posting ~ tossing my hat into the air 🎩
Wow! This is new - for me.
I've got the 'countrified' version that Sonny Charles put out (it's also a bit faster tempo), but, this version I'd not heard before.
Smith wrote overc500 songs he was buddy holly's guitarist also wrote I fought the law Holly died before he could record it so Smith and the Crickets recorded it but Bobby Fuller 4 had a big hit with it. Smith also wrote and played guitar for the Everly Brothers
What I miss from the Mary Tyler Moore Show arrangement is the *brass*.
+theb1rd i agree both version that were released had no brass and i wish couldnt find an extended end credits version as well
When I heard the intro somewhere ..I found thwvwhile song and fell in love with it..I didn't grow upon mtm..but I know she is a sassy character..the song is a fav for the last few years
Oh forgot to say..it either gives that feel good lovey feeling or makes me emotinal..for some reason it in some ways..reminds of a special friend that passed away last March just before my birthday..she was sweet fiesty..and just funny..she had some hard times..but loved everyone..miss her each and everyday..her birthday and her mom's both fell shortly before mine..her mom died months before her..such special women
Great arrangement. I like the later country version, also.
Love it! Her "house" was sold in Kenwood.
Good Morning !!!!
Very impressive !

Buona domenica Monica Di Simone
This is definitely a different mix and pitch from the original score for the tv show. RIP MTM.
love is all around from randy from the green mountains vermont
Thanks for finding this and posting it. Stereo!
My one minor criticism is that it sounds like it's slightly off-center. When I digitize a record, I always check to see that the grooves aren't "moving" back and forth. Just watch the tone arm.
Other than that - great! Good to hear a good copy.
