EZScape One thing I appreciate it is when a runner has to use a backup strat to save a run. Maybe that could be an idea for a future video? Always great content EZ!
Reminds me of a Japanese touring car racer called Keiichi Tsuchiya. He was a good driver but would always drift turns rather than take them normally. When he was asked why he did this, he said “it just looks cool”.
The closest thing I know of to this is a run of Sonic the Hedgehog 1 by Dr. Fatbody. He's an incredibly charismatic individual, and he tries EVERY glitch and strat AT LEAST ONCE, because otherwise you wouldn't see it. And since it's an early Sonic game, the run is pretty short. I suggest it if you find yourself with half an hour to spare. ruclips.net/video/DayNOf9PkQ0/видео.html

I got two for Super Mario Odyssey: 1. In cloud kingdom you can do a thing called a cloud boost which save a little bit of time but on one person goes for it because it’s too risky. His name is Fir by the way. 2. In Moon kingdom in the section where your bowser and in 2D you can do a skip called XD skip. There are three different versions of XD skip. XD skip, True XD skip, and True True XD skip. None of them save time
The most swag thing I've seen in a speedrun that I always will remember is from a GDQ run of Mario Sunhine. In the Pianta Village stage, where you chase Il Piantissimo, the runner runs next to Piantissimo the entire race, mimicing his jumps, flips and turns in perfect syncronisation, until a couple of seconds before the finish.
Bro the drop onto the bell in the shadow temple boat in oot 100%. Zfg used to do it but stopped cause of how risky it was, being a post dampe strat that saves no time and kills the run if you fail it, but it would be sick to see it featured.
Great to see some Titanfall 2 in here! I absolutely adore that game. Also the conveyor lane trick in the beginning is pure swag. It's hard, it's super fast but it doesn't actually save any time in a run.
You forgot the Warthog 360 at the end of The Maw in Halo CE. It ever so slightly maintains your momentum, and it can kill a run if you fly out of your warthog and die, but I'd definitely consider it a Swag Strat, just based on how sick it looks

"Swag strat" to me is a few things, and of course some criteria are subjective. For one, a swag strat can be something that looks cool and takes a very high degree of skill and 1) could be risky while saving lots of time depending on the above criteria, but generally I feel a swag strat 2) saves little or no time and may be extremely risky or not at all. I consider one of Trihex's hallmarks, the frenetic and hectic yet smooth auto-scroller segments in his yoshi's story speedruns to be showing off swag strats, and they often have no control over the speed of the run, yet look cool and showcase talent. I feel for an optimal strategy to also be a swag strat, it has to save a negligible amount of time or none at all. What was once a swag strat could lose its status over time due to becoming the optimal route. For me what makes a speedrun strat swag lies in being borderline or arguably unnecessary and is used by runners to show off their talent or knowledge of a game.
smallant1's legendary xd skip for super mario odyssey is great too. It occurs in the very last section of the game saves literally no time and if he fails it loses 45 seconds, also if he's doing a minimum captures run (which he does pretty often) losing it won't just lose time it kills the entire run because he would have to recapture bowser and therefore go above the 10 caps limit
in Adventure of Link, one of the biggest threats for speed runs or deathless runs are these annoying bubbles that show up. They float up the screen randomly, in areas with pits. you hit one, you go flying. fall into the pit and you die. But by turning and timing a jump just right, you can get knocked back by a bubble onto a platform. This is dangerous, it would end a speed or deathless run in one moment, but it looks awesome. You can do the same with the boss of the penultimate dungeon, but its rarely done because one wrong move and you have to start the whole game over.
xD skip on suler mario odyssey is the definition of swag strat, it saves 0 seconds and can lose you a lot of time if you miss(it's during the bowser escape, smallant1 does it in all of his speedruns)
Yes, those box controllers are made specifically for Smash. Normal box controllers for fighting games would use arcade sticks which wouldn't make frame walking any easier. Since Smashbox and B0xx use analog to digital conversion spamming up inputs at specific angles becomes much easier
1:53 the kill-zone of the lava is just a pixel wide surface. It moves up and down so if you time it correctly you can get your hurt-box under the hit-box of the lava while in invincibility frames from grabbing a ledge
I remember one WR of Super Metroid (Reverse Boss Order category) where the runner got so much time ahead of the previous WR that he took 7 seconds or so to save the animals and it was absolutely awesome.
We HAVE TO mention BigBossman's Perfect Dark run at AGDQ 2014. On Defection Perfect Agent, near the end of the level, you have to land on essentially a 1-pixel-wide platform to glitch through the final wall to the elevator. This is done with a LOT of pause buffering, both in IL and RTA runs. Boss did it pause-less and it was simply remarkable. Legendary. Sad it wasn't mentioned. :(
one night i fell asleep with my phone turned on and of course the autoplay was on on the next day my recommendations were filled with speedrun videos and i was subbed to this channel
Glad to see The Simpsons: Hit & Run glitch with the log at the Pier made it to this list! Always had a good laugh with this one as a kid since you'd go flying so fast and the locations you'd end up at were sooo unpredictable!
I like the Reverse Door Crouch in Star Wars™: Jedi Knight™ - Jedi Academy™. For an example, it's done in CovertMuffin's SGDQ 2016 run, approx 2 mins 30 secs into the run
Since it wasn't explained in the video: The Titanfall 2 segment in the beginning is a swag strat because most of that level is actually an autoscroller as you need to wait for a specific platform to arrive. Speedrunners spent a lot of time optimizing paths in that section because they didn't realize it was an autoscroller until later on, but GDQ runs tend to feature the strats anyway because they're really cool. You can lose half a minute for no reason at all every time you try the funkier stuff in that level!
You missed my favorite one. On smb3, world 3 fort there is a strat to enter a door, then enter it again om the right frame and it takes you directly to boom boom. It's not often done in runs because if you fail its a big loss. In oke agdq there was a race and both racers nailed it, it was awesome.
I'm glad you specified it was possible to do JRB cannonless with another controller. Kinda odd that the commentator for Siglemic's cannonless said it was impossible without his box. I've seen Cheese do it with his Hori controller.
Tree Skip in DS3 was pretty swag. It might have saved about a second, but I'm pretty sure nobody ever earnestly attempted it for the time save. You basically just use a tree trunk to hop over a small gap, but the time loss if you fuck it up and fall down the gap is huge. Looks cool though. I say 'was' pretty swag because I think newer speedrun routes have obsolete it even in all bosses categories, but I'm not 100% sure about that, maybe people just stopped doing it in serious runs.
Featuring samu was cool. In supertux, there's a TAS only cycle skip you can do on one of the final levels, Nolok's Castle. It requires a frame perfect ICG that is used later in the level to kill an enemy you usually have to slow down and wait for. This let's you skip the cycle. It only saves 0.05s because you loose a few frames to grabbing the ice cube. I have a video of the IL Nolok's Castle in 53.98s on my channel somewhere, along with a video explaining the trick I think. Using this trick helped me get a sub 54 in that level, along with some other swagger frame boost strats. The second place time is about 0.3s slower, which for a 2D game, it's kind of a large gap.
And if you want a strat that doesnt save time, on Duct Ape (in the forest world) there's a specific spot where you can clip into the wall and mash the space bar to get to the level exit. However, it requires two springs, one of which is near the end anyway. It would take more time to set up the trick than to actually finish the level lol. I have a video theorising the trick and Silur had a video executing the trick. So far it's only possible with external tools because you need to mash very fast. peertube.social/videos/watch/596545ec-a36b-4c72-8ceb-8456802dc34b is the video of him doing the actual wall clip.
third party box controller used for smash? In what world do you live in EZScape? They use GC controller or Pro controller but those kind of boxes are mostly use for more traditional fighting game
A player called Hax (the 20XX guy) made a smash box and uses it exclusively at a high level. Not many people use it but it's most certainly a thing and it's what was used in the video of siglemic.
In Jersey Devil for the PS1, there is only one level in the game that we can clip into early. It doesn't save any time over entering the level normally, and attempting it puts you at risk of entering a different level and losing around a minute getting back there. I don't know anyone that doesn't always go for the swag entrance.
I was hoping to see GTA VC ice cream truck strat at the end of the run, it's actually losses time but it'll look funny in the end cutscene. I think KZ_Frew pulled this on his GDQ run back in January
Best series yet. Everyone knows the more well used strats, backups, and routes...its almost becoming "cookie cutter" watching everyone do the SAME run...Very seldom do you see "risky" strats being exicuted, and thats fuckin dope. Keep it up yo
Worldline skate in Destiny 2 completely revolutionized speedruning in D2. A team of 6 warlocks could easily cut a wr down by a minute or so as apposed to a diverse fireteam without worldline skate.
Not a big swag strat, but Sonic Adventure 2 has something called Hoover Jumping. If you initiate a hoover right after you jump, you gain extra height. The more frame perfect you do it, the more height you get out of it. To make it easier you can pause buffer it, it doesn't lose time since the game is timed by IGT and pausing the game doesn't effect that. But if you wanna go for a little extra swag you can not pause buffer and just quickly press the jump button twice. There are runners who do it on a regular basis, but I'm not one of them.
A strat that I think would be good for a part 2 of this list would be what I believe is called "Turret Fly" in Portal 2. While I don't know exactly how the trick works, the basic premise of it is that, during the portion of the game where you are suppose the grab a defective turret to use it as a new template turret, you could instead grab 2 defective turrets and, somehow, lift yourself high up into the air which allows you to skip the room you're supposed to enter where the template turret is. This trick isn't one that saves anytime, at least not anymore, as it is RNG based, and another skip was found that saves a couple more seconds even with if you got good RNG. An example of this trick being done was during Can't Even's run of the game during SGDQ 2019.
Love the list, but you missed a classic, which is the Super Mario World Yump. It's a frame perfect jump off of the big p switches in the p switch palaces that saves literally no time, but is fun and a big hype moment during SMW runs (and the ROM hacks built off of it)
I think it was in Metroid Prime 2, but there was a rediculous speed boost jump where you have to time it off of a flying Jellyfish/Drone (?) and hop across a huge gap to save time which you could only attempt once.
In the game my friend Pedro there’s a stray on the third to last level where you shoot a guy then there’s a 50/50 chance he drops a piece of flesh that you can them kick out of midair into another enemies head if you press the button in a 3 frame window
Oh, Titalfall 2 gamplay in the start, that reminds me: I should watch a speedrun of this game once, its such a great singleplayer campaign with such good movement, surely will be pterry fun to watch^^
In Star Wars: Jedi Knight Jedi Academy speed run, there's a funny swag strat called the "reverse door crouchy" and it's as ridiculous as it sounds. Look up Covertmuffin1 runs of the game and he usually does it on one of the Tatooine levels for swag. It saves no time but it's funny to watch.
I forgot that SGDQ 2017 had audio issues and there is no right side audio, so if you don't hear much for the Spyro 3 clip... that's why.

I think the best GTA 5 Speed Run Swag Strat is when you get out of your car mid air to launch yourself towards Michael's house.
Not sure if it counts as it's guaranteed 0 seconds time saving and 100% risk/swag but GarishGoblin doing the 360 Warthog at the end of his runs
The TP slide is extensive in the TAS, really impressive and funny
Amazing video that was made even better by having my boi Bryonato in the intro
360 Swag Flip at the end of the Halo: Combat Evolved speedruns
Love that move, I always do it. Also the clip through the elevator in 2 Betrayals.
EZScape, you're the shit! Keep up the good work 👌
Not a big swag strat, but Sonic Adventure 2 has something called Hoover Jumping.
Yes!!! Another EZScape Video!
I’ve never seen so many of my favorite childhood games in one video before
Amazing compilation!
Love the list, but you missed a classic, which is the Super Mario World Yump. It's a frame perfect jump off of the big p switches in the p switch palaces that saves literally no time, but is fun and a big hype moment during SMW runs (and the ROM hacks built off of it)
This was great. Part 2 please 🐸
I think the “zipping” glitch in Prince of Persia is a lot of times swag strats when the time save is minimal but it looks dope as hell
I really Love your Videos ♥️ keep it going !
Shout out to that 360 swag on Halo CE speedruns with the legend himself - Garish Goblin
Oh hell yeah, this is great. I love crazy tricks during runs.
I think it was in Metroid Prime 2, but there was a rediculous speed boost jump where you have to time it off of a flying Jellyfish/Drone (?) and hop across a huge gap to save time which you could only attempt once.
Can’t recall off the top of my head
love that idea for a series
Been waiting on this one
My boy Bryo starting off an EZ video!!!!!!
You could definitely make this into a series
My absolute favorite swag strat is doing a 360 in the warthog off the big jump during the maw in Halo 1
The kid that does the gen 1 swag trick gave me diabetes
ok
ZFT OOT doing bell strats in the shadow temple. Saves zero time and chat yells at him whenever he does it lol
